She has this wonderful sound, sweet but intense with an edge to it - perfect for Mozart. There is a story of when Yehudi Menuhin was a child he desperately wanted to play the Beethoven concerto, but Persinger, his teacher at the time, made him learn the Mozart A major first - he memorised it in a few days and then played it for the teacher, apparently so mechanically and with less respect for the great music than it deserved, that it was like a hurdy gurdy. His teacher (for the first and only time) lost his temper and told him to do it again. This time, Menuhin recalled, he was enchanted by the music, played it well - and all was forgiven.

I absolutely adore the Mozart violin concertos, but number five is probably my favourite. I have listened to and watched many different performances of this piece and I have to say that this orchestra and the delightful and highly talented young lady soloist, Chloe Chua, is exceptional! Chloe and the SSO have together recorded the complete works by Mozart for violin and orchestra, includsing the five concertos, the Sinfonia Concertante, and the Rondos, and the Adagio. The recording is going to be released in the new year as a CD box set, and in other formats. It is something I very much look forward to!

@@LANCSKID Over the next 15 months after she gave this performance, Chloe gave live performances with the SSO of Mozart #3, #4 and the Sinfonia Concertante (with the wonderful Ziyu He on viola), Bruch #1. Paganini #1. and the gorgeous Butterfly Lovers violin concerto by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang! The performance of the Sinfonia Concertante has been posted on YT (albeit behind SSO's extremely minimal paywall), and it is superb. Probably the performances of #3 and #4 will be posted eventually. The acid test for this concerto is the start of the violin solo (2:33) in the Allegro aperto. It must be delivered à la bel canto soprano style, Mozart being known for his majestic lyricism in both operas and concertos. Chloe Chua passed the acid test.

And suddenly there was with the angels, Chloe Chua and the SSO sending her music heavenward, and then returning it to earth for all of us to be enraptured. She is at one with her violin and the music, and we are the grateful recipients. While the acoustics of the symphony hall there are amazing, kudos to the videographer(s) and sound engineer(s) to make this recording at once so glorious and yet so intimate. Time to get back to Singapore, Chomp Chomp, and now a possible concert with Ms. Chua.
