My website is www.bucklehurstleather.co.uk for high quality handmade leather belts, bags, axe covers, tool rolls etc.
Showing you my heavy duty walking foot sewing machine made by Singer, that I use for leather work.
I have fitted this machine with a 3x speed reduction pulley to make it more controllable. In this film I show you the machine sewing both thin leather and thick vegetable tan leather. I also show the action of a walking foot, and give a brief overview of what it can do, and the needles and thread that I use.

Hi Harry, thanks for your fantastic! and knowledgeable videos. After 40 years of canvas work, I'm finally starting on leather work. Recently I purchased a 133k8 walking foot, it's a beautiful black vintage machine. I have given canvas work a back seat, leather work is my new hobby. Thanks for sharing your leather skills and sewing machines, please keep sharing, I'm a visual learner and your teaching is amazing, cheers Roy 🙂

Thanks for the instruction manuals on the 133k8 Harry. Reading everyone's posts it doesn't matter where you live in the world these machines are getting extremely rare to find now. The one I bought was sitting in an old saddler makers grandsons shed for 20 years. He didn't know how rare it was and was going to take it to the tip before his wife told him to throw it in eBay. The true test will be finding parts. Thanks again for you help and advise. Scott (Australia)

wish you the best...im looking into buying a machine myself and a buffer for making bracelets. Any advice would be great.... I want to make hand tooled bracelets with a very fine finish...sometimes i think the best thing to do is to finish them by hand, but there are details on top that will need stitching, I'm working with Veg Tan...that i will be dying...so its not that thick. I have a background in Fashion design, jewelry and knitting...and pattern design. I made on leather skirt in fashion school, so i don't know if i quality to work with leather....it was like 10 yrs ago, I'm trying bracelets now with tooling and I'm loving it and am hoping to run a custom made Jewelry leather business. Thank you. Great videos.

I'm sure the 133K was produced in Kilbowie for the "war effort". In fact, no home sewing machines were produced during WWII. The very fact that some of these survived and are still being used is amazing. I collect, maintain and repair some antique/vintage Singers here in California. I have used my 15-91 to repair leather items. Not that I wouldn't like to have your machine, (I have no personal use for it and like you have run out of space). Your videos are a joy to watch and see your machines in action. Thanks for showing them to us!!

Hello, Harry. I like watching your videos; very interesting. I justed wanted to give you and any other woodworker here a tip on free wood that's filling landfills here in the states, and possibly other countries as well. It's from crating for lawnmowers. the crates are often deck planking or heavier; often 3 to 7 ft long. This is the time of year the stores are stocking up, so the discarded crating is ,too. The stuff is easy to pull apart, not like pallets. It pains me to see so much nice wood getting tossed out so I like to spread the word. Have a great day !

Thank you so much for this video. I have got a hold of a Singer 133k8, and Im so happy about it. After a bit of adjustments, it now works well. But it has got a rollerfoot on it. I cant get used to this, and I have searched and searched online for a presser/walkingfoot like yours but without luck. I would be so happy if you have got any tips where to get a hold of it, and how to switch/install it on the machine. Thank you on beforehand. Alle the best, regards from Norway

Hi I no longer have this machine to look at it, but if it is a version which previously had a jump foot, and it may not be, then I think you would need to reinstall the jump foot. College Sewing UK may have some parts. I would imagine it would be good with a roller for a lot of flat sewing operations. ISMACS website will have a list of the 133k models.

Hi Harry, another great informative video presented in your own unique & down to earth manner. You mentioned bonded nylon thread. How would waxed thread work with this machine? The same waxed thread that i use for hand stitching. Thank you
@harryrogers

Desmond Moore Hi I have never tried it and no longer have this machine, but I suspect it would work as the machine could handle a 160 or I recall even a 210 needle...and I guess they used that before the advent of bonded nylon...sorry cannot help further...perhaps someone here knows for sure.

Sweet machine! I just need a leather machine to complete my set, currently I have to do any leatherwork on a 320k which does surprisingly well, I leather wrapped my wax jacket cuffs, 4 layers of 1mm-ish leather and 2 layers of wax cotton and it didn't miss a beat. I don't see it faring well on 4mm veg tan though, haha.

It is a wonderful machine. I have a 319k and a 320k. The 319 is smoother and stitches better, more accessories too, but the 320 is useful with the free arm, I guess I need both! haha. I have a 185k also that is a lovely little machine for small jobs. Recently picked up a 201k but not sure if it will be worth the effort to restore.
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 10 жыл бұрын
caskwith I like my 201k...I would have more machines if I had the space, but sadly I do not ...probably just as well. I use my 201k for fine leather, but it sounds as though you already have a good collection to choose from!
@caskwith
@caskwith 10 жыл бұрын
I have heard good things about the 201k but we really don't need another straight stitch machine as we already have the 185k and to be honest we use a variety of stitches for craft projects. If space and time weren't an issue then I would be inclined to put the effort in but I think it will be a parts only machine. It was a car boot bargain bought with the intention of stripping for parts anyway so I don't mind too much.

Hi Harry Having just acquired a singer 133K17 I have found your videos really helpful, so thank you. I realize that you no longer have you 133K but hoped you could still help me with a stitch length query. I know that to set stitch length you push the little leaver on the front of the machine and turn the fly wheel, the shortest stitch length I can achieve is 4 1/2 stitches per inch. My question is should this be the shortest it can do or might there be something wrong with the stitch length adjustment. Thanks in advance Sue

I want to repair fencing jackets and breeches for my friends and fellow club members. I already own a Juki 555 Industrial straight stitch machine that I have refurbished. hi harry I have a singer 29-4 and it won't pick up the loop and finish the stitch from the bobbin it balls up on the bottom of my work or it tangles in the shuttle carrier and jams the machine, I have the right size needle and everything is threaded correctly is there any tips or guesses on what's causing this?
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 8 жыл бұрын
+Ken Harris Ken - possibly loose top tension, or foot pressure too strong, or shuttle leaf spring too tight....or less likely blunt bobbin point...those are my guesses, and I'm sorry they are just guesses!

@harryrogers
@harryrogers 6 жыл бұрын
carole simard I am not familiar with that machine but the foot climbing ability of machines does vary...I assume your sewing machine foot has some upturn on the front edge to allow gradient climbing ....as without that it will brick wall on a seam edge.

So I have a couple of the standard general purpose black singers from the 1930s, what could I do to these machines to make them better suited to work leather? is it even possible? is it just a case of using a more powerful motor and gearing reduction, making the machine slower? Thanks
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Ceallaigh Peter - your main constraint may be thread size....those machines will probably be fine with fine leather like pig skin. For thick leather you need a proper industrial machine for its power, walking foot and thread capacity. Think of it as moped versus car.

I've spent quite some time on cleaning, oiling and attempting to setup the machine, but it still needs work. My question is, do you know the machine? Is it worth persisting and spending the money to have it serviced or will I have to bite the bullet and spend serious money on a needle feed machine? Thanks, Greg

+Dubidub2 Having used both I think they are similar machines in many respects, the 133k is a very tough machine......of course with all these models there are different versions, drop feed, darning foot, reverse etc etc

Hi. I was wondering if these machines would work for sewing thick woven material like backpack straps and things like that. There is a double needle one here for sale. What would be a fair price in good condition?

Hi yes the Singer 45k machines are similar and able to punch through thick veg tan leather. All these industrial machines do one thing well so it's important to decide what you will be using it for. I have sold this machine as I am now mainly making bags from thinner leather but if you want to make things from thick veg tan the 45k and 133k are great.

I do a strange kind of work. Making sculptures out of existing hand bags so it's awkward, like trying to join shoes together if you can imagine. So far I've done it by hand but we've got a big job coming up and I'm wondering whether a machine would pick up the pace and save our hands. Your videos are really informative, thanks for replying to me. If you want to see what I mean go to Www.billieachilleos.co.uk/louis-vuitton-barcelona-store-opening/

A lot of leatherwork people use the 45k for heavy work, I think it's similar to the 133k, the 133k is big, but I suspect its foot lift is not dissimilar, its probablya bit stronger as a machine. I now use compound feed lighter machines as I do lighter work. If you are looking for a heavy harness machine then a Juki 441 type or clone might be worth adding to your list.
