Thanks to inspiration from Sewing Machine Rehab (links below) I did a deep dive on the lower housing of my Singer 301’s motor, cleaning the multiple lubricating wicks and thoroughly re-lubricating this important part of the motor. Never be afraid to do a thorough and careful job!

When these bronze bushings were made they were impregnated with oil under high pressure, so you are right, only clean the bearing with fresh oil. Also I believe these are oil wicks, not grease wicks. The worm gear would get greased. Great Video!

HI! Dental picks, yes! Who knew? Interesting idea about keeping the orientation of the bearing the same as it was, hadn’t considered that. Also agree about keeping teflon out of those parts. Getting the bearing straight, also very important. There is so little clearance it needs to be perfectly aligned. You are right, not all the motors have the felt ring, my thoughts are if it was there when you took it apart, put it back. Great job and very informative! Love how you wrote the date of service on the housing, great idea. And thanks for the shout out!

Nicely done. The felt ring is fascinating. I've never seen one so thanks for showing/explaining. it. I think using the brush cover to set the carbon holder tube distance is the best way to do it. I always enjoy your videos so much.

I am good friends with someone who worked for Singer, at a Sewing Center repair shop. They used nothing but pure Vaseline to lube the motors with.
