Great video. Bernina's first rotary hook domestic machines were copies of Singer 221 rotary hook, such as the Kl. 117. Not quite interchangeable, but clearly copied. I've also found Featherweights with the hook a little too far away from the needle, so easier to catch the guard.

Thanks! My knowledge is limited mostly to Singers (because I feel I only have so much time!) but I love to hear about other makes. Hope Bernina was able to improve slightly on the Singer hook! Shame that the metal on the guard is so soft...if it were harder it might actually sharpen the needle a little!

@@thevmc My knowledge in more on the vintage Bernina's :-) I've not noticed the same kind of deep gauging on the guard, so maybe a harder metal. But still very susceptible to thread jams.

I have very signifiant experience with the Singer #500 sewing machines. I learned to sew on one in 1962 and have owned several. There are many issues here.. This machine is "running rough", this could be the result of an inexperienced repair-person loosening a gear and re-seating it causing binding and lack of smoothness ( back in the day, Singer stipulated that the machines be returned to the factory for re-seating and regrinding ). I hear a loose bobbin case due to the need for proper adjustment. The motor is straining to start, due to an improperly lubricated machine and the upper motor bearing ( ball ) is dry and growling. A well cleaned and polished motor commutator will result in a "smooth running motor"... All the "speculations in the world" will not remedy these issues..

@@thevmc Hidden under the shaft that controls the pattern designs. The newer production models did not have it.. It was then an "empty space" ( it was a cost cutting move, "one less bearing= saves money" ). All the # 401 machines had it and all the early # 500 machines did. I really do not know if it made a difference. Perhaps it did stabilize the upper horizontal shaft. This is the only such revision in the # 500 machines. Now the # 600 machines had "revisions" every few months.. ( The very best #401 machines were made in 1956- overbuilt to the max . Bronze lower bearings, heavily chromed screws and more )..

Well.. complicated question, turns out. I thought it was 3/4" but measuring the pipe and clamp it looks like 1" pipe. I don't see that they come in 1", so I'm not sure and can't remember (can't find the receipt).... but I'm certain that 3/4" would work fine. @@pd10642 Thank you for your reply. Ended up hunting them down and learned something new: Pipes apparently aren't measured by the outside diameter. I got the 3/4" clamp set and the pipe that fits it is actually over an inch thick. It's plenty sturdy enough for the job. Got all the way to the end of this process, bearing seated, armature shaft in place. Went to reinstall the retainer ring, which for me came out easily. Well, I had a hard time getting it back in. Was using pliers when the pliers slipped and drove right into the bearing race cover, denting it enough to make the grease start leaking. Oh my. Now I have to order more bearings and start over. Sorry to bother you for one more question, I really do appreciate your videos! Do these packages you hold up contain multiple bearings? Thanks so much

Thanks, very useful. My 101 motor did not have any washers! I just put back in the worm gear and I also put the other screw in half way, then the screw that goes against the flat spot. Tip: To stop the worm gear from spinning, use blue painter's tape to attach it to the body. Then you can hold the motor stable with your left hand and use the screwdriver with your right hand, without the worm gear spinning.

Wow, an original owner! That's truly wonderful. My mom had a 640 Golden Touch&Sew that I learned a bit on, and I started my collection with a good old 15, but when I saw the 500A I thought, and still think, that it's the most fantastic sewing machine ever designed. I really hope you can sort out the tension issues. I've admittedly struggled with mine as well (part of what prompted this video) and some of what I've experienced is that I think this machine really only likes standard polyester "stacked" (as opposed to cross-wound) thread. When I've had issues, it seems that swapping the thread can help.

@@thevmc About the throat plate clamp adjusting screw on 400-500s, do you think it's possible to file down the edges of a penny and thread it in to replace one? @thevmc
@thevmc Жыл бұрын
@@sauces_official Yeppp, you're gonna make me feel like manufacturing that part next, haha! It's technically a short bolt with channels cut into it. I have been lucky to obtain as spare parts some earlier versions -- the ones for the 301 were made of metal! Those will never go bad. I do fault Singer for sliding to plastic even as early as the 400/500 series on that part. If you look, it has an "X" in it, two channels along which the throat plate adjusting lever could run, so I suppose if one wore down you could turn it a quarter turn and then have another channel to wear down some. That said, it would take a lot of use to wear even the plastic ones down. I don't think a coin would be thick enough to work, because unless you have those channels cut into the depth of it, there's nothing to hold it in place from unscrewing and turning back out. It's kind of a genius piece of engineering, adjustable and retained by the mechanism it supports. I'm certain it would be possible to find a substitute starting material and craft it. Starting on that immediately.

@SewingMachineRehab
@SewingMachineRehab Жыл бұрын
Very interesting topic! Over the years I have heard quilters say that they absolutely love the hook on the 301 and 221 specifically for quilting. I am not sure how many of them free motion on them, I think the majority of them use them for piecing. Obviously piecing and free motion quilting are very different actions. I think the damage we see to the thread loop guard also comes from trying to sew through too many layers of fabric or really heavy duty things. When you look at the hook on the 301 and 221 I also think about how easy they are to remove and adjust. (In my opinion) That would have been a plus for any home seamstress who wanted to maintain their machine. They are pretty straightforward. Now, moving on to the hooks in say the 400 series….way better for free motion, less problems while you are sewing, for sure! Also, I see way less damage on these hooks when I restore them. I am sure that is because their design is actually better. But…when it comes to adjusting and general maintenance, they feel just a little bit trickier. If you don’t have the thread clearance set correct around the bobbin case positioning spring bracket or something is wonky with the positioning finger (I have had to replace those) you can really pull your hair out. So…I think you will find that people are divided into two camps on this. But you are definitely correct, the 301/221 hook assembly wasn’t the best design and prone to problems. I never have taken one off without finding thread wrapped around inside.
@thevmc
@thevmc Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! It's a total cinch to remove and service, and you'll never mis-time it because of the flat spot it screws back onto (as long as you make sure the hook is on that side, of course!) The 400/500 series also can be removed with preserved timing, though it's much tricker and you have to make sure to mesh the gear attached to the bottom of the hook back up with its mate correctly. Totally agree that for piecing and regular straight sewing these are probably just great, but I just cringe at the potential for burrs and spooling thread! Interesting also that we have two machines with the same hook, one with straight needle and the other the first slant -- makes you want to do some trials and comparisons to see if there really is an advantage/disadvantage!
