I will never forget my friends and I sitting around the television watching "Friday Night Videos"...NBC's response to MTV. Sister Christian was so huge at the time and just before the video played Night Ranger themselves appeared on the screen and dedicated the track to the graduating class of 1984...that was "OUR" class!!!!!!!! We were so pumped and the subject was the talk of the school that following Monday. It was a magical evening and yes we collectively sang the song at the top of our lungs in my parents living room as the video played. Great memories, great band and most importantly...a great song. Thank you Professor...for the chords and the truth. Slainte!!!!

Love your channel. I had the honor to work, live on air, in radio for over 20 years. I had an opportunity to meet some of my biggest heroes, hang out, build relationships and make some very dear friends. I would have worked my entire career for "free" if I could have had you as an on air partner. I truly dig your content, back stories, interviews...never boring and more often than not...very educational. The one downside of working in the only vocation I ever dreamt of doing, would be, being on the airwaves when one of "the legends" of the time passed away by one way or another. Being the number one afternoon drive jock in every market that I worked in meant this happened far too many times. I've always hated delivering bad news, but when it involves someone you knew and had genuine feelings for at a familial level....it is devastating. SRV, Cobain, Dimebag, Dave Williams, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Chester Bennington, Scott Wieland, Vinnie Paul, Kevin Dubrow, Frankie Banali...so many more...but none like the gut shot that came October 6th 2020 when we lost EVH. I don't care about the gossip and all the stories of difficulty, vanity, control freak...he treated me like family.

I went to see "Rock of Ages" on Broadway, and in the balcony near us were the guys from Night Ranger. When they played "Sister Christian," Kelly sang along, and air drummed. At intermission, I crossed paths with Jack Blades and said, I told my wife you guys are Night Ranger and she thinks I am crazy. He reached out, shook my hand, and said, "I'm Jack Blades, and you can tell your wife you're not crazy." Excellent memory and a good guy. Evidently, a member of the stage band was a member of their touring band, and they came to see him. A great night in NYC.

Night Ranger to me, is the, THE 80's band....I hate that I'm posting this a year after you asked for comments.....I'm a drummer, and wanting to be a rock drummer, Kelly Keagy was the one I started learning from. Night Ranger was my FIRST ROCK CONCERT, EVER! I can play every single Night Ranger song on the drum kit because of their influence on me. I saw them twice after that, once at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs right after they released Neverland. Kelly is my first drummer that I emulated and learned from. Sister Christian was the first song that I "mastered" on a kit. Hearing how he came up with things and mastered it himself just makes me more proud. Thanks Prof.

Sister Christian was perhaps partially ruined for me due to a job I had at a grocery store. I never got tired of the song but it was on the rotation overhead and I would hear it 4x a day. It got so that a buddy of mine who I typically stocked shelves with made up store specific alternate lyrics. At the key moment when we were stocking together we would sing out loud, "Krogerin'!!!!! What's your price for rice?!?!?!?" and laugh. Hope all is well with you, Peter. LOL

But my daughter got to serve dinner to her favorite, Bryan White. Those were the best days ever! You didn’t make a ton of money working for small town radio… but the comps kept me there for well over a decade. My kids had the best memories, better than anything money could buy. Like you, this was a "don't touch the dial/change the channel" song of my childhood. It's probably a top-five song from that period of my life. As a singer and wanna-be drummer, this was everything I loved about music at the time! While I still listened to the song when it came on the air after that, I did not hear it as much as some other 80s staples as time moved on, but it still tugged at the old heartstrings when I did come by it a few times a year. Fast foward to last year when, by chance, Night Ranger plays at my local county fair. A friend and I went to the show and were blown away! Amazing energy, solid musicianship and nostalgia for days. I was so high on Night Ranger after that that I think "Rock in America" was on my most-listened-to songs on Spotify at the end of the year. And "Sister Christian" was as awesome as ever. It was great hearing the side project songs they performed as well, including some Ozzy and Damn Yankees! (No Shaw Blades songs that I can remember. . .) Anyhow, thank you for this. We were bummed that Night Ranger won't be back to our local fair this year, but they've booked The Guess Who, so we're re-acquainting ourselves with that catalog in anticipation of another fun night!

Adam, I hope you read this. In 1984, my girlfriend and I attempted an ill-fated 2-week summer road trip from San Diego to Chicago. In Gila Bend, AZ, my 68 VW Bus blew the engine, and we subsequently spent a brutal week in Phoenix waiting for the engine rebuild. When we finally got the "repaired" VW, we decided to abort the Chicago destination and head back west to Sacramento. We left after midnight to make the journey across the desert cooler for the engine. I was feeling elated that we were finally leaving Phoenix and "on the dark desert highway", as the Eagles would say. "Sister Christian" started playing on the stereo, and the first build in the beginning of the song always made my hair stand on end (I'm a drummer). I cranked the volume, the drum build started, I'm pounding along on the steering wheel, and when it hit the crescendo at "Motor-IN", right on beat, the "new" engine blew with a loud BANG and a massive cloud of smoke, red from the taillights, billowed, like a perfectly timed flash pot at a concert. Still singing "WHAT'S YOUR PRICE FOR FLIGHT?" we coasted to the dirt shoulder and rolled to a stop under a huge sign that said "Arizona State Correctional Facility - DO NOT STOP FOR HITCH HIKERS". Absolutely dark without any headlights in sight, we sat there under that sign, belting out the lyrics to the rest of the song before considering once again how F'd. we were. It's an oddly pleasant memory of a very bad vacation. As always, GREAT interview(s), Adam.

When I was 12, Night Ranger opened up for Sammy Hagar in Pocatello, Idaho. This was the first rock concert I ever wanted to go to, and I really REALLY wanted to go. But no matter how much I begged my mom said no, I was too young. But my older sister got to go. Grrr. I got to see Sammy with Van Hagar a couple times a few years later, but I never got a chance to see Night Ranger. Fast forward nearly 40 years to 2019. I'm in Las Cruces, New Mexico to spend the 4th of July with my daughter that was going to school there. I open up the local paper and see that Night Ranger is giving a free concert just a few blocks from our hotel. I was unreasonably excited, so excited that apparently it kind of freaked out my wife. I think my brain had stored away the dream of seeing Night Ranger back when I was 12, along with all the excitement I felt at the time. Needless to say, I finally got my chance to see Night Ranger. But as good as they were, it didn't live up to the fantasy I'd built up. One reason is because Brad Gillis wasn't there due to illness (despite what Wikipedia says, THIS was the first NR concert he ever missed) and they played the whole show with just one guitarist. But mostly I think 50 year old me just doesn't get as starstruck as I did when I was 12. Regardless, I'm glad I got to cross a Night Ranger show off my bucket list.

i grew up in the bay area; during my high school years, the San Jose FM stations played their songs since the very beginning of the band. The stations KSJO and KOME in particular, were a big part of the band's success. Fun fact: their tour bus used to park in a lot that was visible from highway 280; it had a mural of Dawn Patrol on the side of it...pretty obvious whose bus it was. Also, there was a big cruising scene on El Camino every weekend and there was a young lady who had a dark blue Ford Ranger; she had modified the logo on the side of the pickup to say "Night Ranger" in an obvious nod to the band. This video brought back several memories. Night Ranger is one of the great bands from the Bay Area.

@@mattsmith7490Great mention! I just played Bears for my 21 year-old son about a month ago for the first time... he bought me a new turntable for my birthday, so I broke out my old vinyls. He's now a fan.

I remember camping with friends at my place in New Hampshirite back in October 1986 when this song came on the radio. Sitting around the campfire and having a few beers made me get up, grab a long stick destined for the campfire, and started playing the stick guitar to this song! My friend took a picture of me with this stick, holding it like a guitar, and every time I see this picture, it always minds me of this great song. My kids get a kick out of this song when they hear it being played because they know of this picture of me when I was 23 playing the bad ass stick guitar. LOL

Night Ranger is one of those bands with two super amazing guitarists ( like Ratt, Def Leppard, etc) and each with a very diferent style. Brad Gillis with his Whammy bar and Jeff Watson with his eight fingered tapping technique and two great lead singers, man no wonder why they dominated the radio stations with some many great hits.

This song came out my senior year of high school in the spring when I was in my 4th foster home. Absolutely loved it and the video. Every time I hear it I flash back to that time.

Got to see them play live in 2019 at the Ohio State Fair in a double bill with my all-time favorite band, REO Speedwagon. It was a fantastic show. I even brought along my daughter, who was 15 at the time, and though this wasn’t her music, she had a good time as well. One particular highlight was Jack Blades and one of the other guitarists joining Kelly Keagy for an impromptu 3 person drum solo! It was wild. Apparently, you can still Rock in America!

My oldest brother named his daughter Kristyn (spelled differently)!! I dedicate this song to her on her birthday every June 5th!! She recently celebrated her 34th birthday!! Yes I still dedicate it to her!! I look forward to your next video!!

I worked as a Handy Person for a number of years in the city. my name got passed around a lot of the movers n shakers then. I was working for a nice little old lady one day and on her wall was a gold record from Night Ranger, she and her hubby had staked them at some point and they thanked them with one of their gold records. I was amazed that they had even heard of NR much less being involved. It was super cool to see one up close too, And she was very proud of having helped them too! . Love the channel, mmore more more!

I got to see night ranger in concert somewhere around 2004. They did a free outdoor show sponsored by a local radio station. I only knew a couple of their songs prior to seeing them, but they rocked the house and made me a fan from that day on. That’s so cool that you got interviews with both Kelly and Jack. I really enjoyed listening to this episode, and hope to hear more from them.

I saw these guys opening for Journey on a hot June afternoon. They played while the sun was still up, Journey got to close in the night air. I had paid for two VIP tickets. As my son and I were walked backstage, there was a van idling waiting for one of the guitarists to get off the bus and go with them. The guy says and here’s Jack Blades from Night Ranger. Jack says hi. The guy jokingly says Jack you wanna come over and talk to the group? Jack just straight deadpans “Too fucking hot!!” We all laughed and Jack says he hopes we all enjoy the show. My son and I had a great time and we can still picture Jack saying that when we tell the story

Brad Gillis is truly a great guitar player. I never gave him enough credit until he filled in for the late great Randy Rhodes for Ozzy. No he didn’t do perfect note for note renditions but to learn all of that material so quickly and put his own amazing flare on it was quite impressive to me.

I still think about my college sweetheart and this song. OUR daughter thinks 'Sister Christian' is't as good of a song as I do.. But then again, I loved that moment. She has NickelBack, Soundgarden etc.
@stevegallo8483 Жыл бұрын
Night Ranger is an incredible band. LOVE Sister Christian. It's an 80s classic. You are so right about the Bay area not getting the credit for its music scene. Bands like Santana, Journey, Night Ranger, Huey Lewis and the News, Starship and others came out of that area.
