That was the whole point, it wasn't that Rachel was better, it was that Rachel worked harder. Which, as Mercedes says, later kept her on her toes. The lazy bit was a bit much, but she was wrong to think she didn't need practice, she did that in the first season with the first boy/girl competition too.
