I had a Guatemalan coworker who was one the most macho men alive, and one day, he just turns to me and just says, "What are you afraid of my Guatemalan-ness?" Then we proceeded to rapid fire qoute this movie and laugh.

@user-nt8lq4rp3z This guy and I could really butt heads BUT we really respected each other. 1 day, he came in with a story about how he got indigestion so bad the night before he was afraid he might die. Instead of calling for help, he turned to me and said, "I left the door unlocked, though. Cuz if I didn't show up for work after a couple of days, I know you'd come looking for me and wouldn't have to break in." lol

When the movie came out, the sentiment was “why can’t the father just do this for his son?!”, it’s nice to see that today, the consensus is “what a shifty thing to ask your father to do”
@johng482
@johng482 3 ай бұрын
To be honest, I don’t remember that sentiment when the movie came out. Full disclosure, I’m a conservative evangelical Christian with generally conservatarian (libertarian/conservative-at least in American political terminology) political views and the others I discussed this movie with were of similar bend (though with either Catholic or liturgical-Protestantism religious views with some of them). The general consensus we had was that the children were selfish a-holes. The gay parents, while we wholeheartedly disagreed with their lifestyles, seemed genuinely concerned about their son (and why should I expect a non-Christian to act like a Christian?), and didn’t push him to be like them. We also laughed hard at the Gene Hackman character who e we recognized to be a caricature of us (albeit not necessarily well done-I don’t know a single Christian who would consider asking both the pope (Catholic) and Billy Graham (Baptist) to bless something (despite my profound respect for John Paul II, I know we had fundamental areas where we disagreed religiously that would have made an alliance between him and someone like me very difficult).

Val is also young: remember Williams says to him "First of all, you're only 20." Albert says: "You're only a baby". Both Val and Barbara are young, so the reason for concern is actually right there.

Hank Azeria does a lot of voices on the simpsons, I saw an Interview not long ago where he listed all the voices he does and was shocked. He used to Apu but people started giving him and the show a hard time that he was voicing an East Indian character. Palimony agreements were used by gay couples to make sure that if anything ever happened to one of them that the other would be taken care of because a lot of times when one member of a gay couple would die their family would swoop and and make sure the other partner didn’t get anything including their home and money and in a lot of cases the families would make sure that their partner wasn’t even invited to the funeral. They were also used by wealthy and famous gay men to protect their assets in case their partner was just a gold digger and tried to take as much as they could from them, there were cases of famous gay me. Being sued by ex boyfriends for half of their fortunes. The scene where Robin falls in the kitchens and says fuck the shrimp wasn’t supposed to happen but he fell and just ran with it.

When Nathan Lane did this movie, he wasn’t fully out yet. When Nathan and Robin were on Oprah, Nathan had said to Robin before hand - he wasn’t ready to talk about his sexuality and didn’t want to make the promotion of the movie all about that. But as Oprah started to veer the conversation in the direction of it, Robin swooped in and distracted her and went on a tangent. Essentially protected Nathan Lane.

When Armand says "There are no straight maids in South Beach". lol Pretty accurate. lol People might find this hard to believe, but back in 95 when the movies was shot, SoBe was even gayer than the movie portrays. The beach is across the street from the main strip, but aside from a couple of scenes, the movie really doesn't showcase the beach itself. And yes, everyone was half naked on the streets. lol Back then South Beach was just starting to make waves as the new "hot spot" (as it had been previously in history). It was definitely grungier than what the movie shows. Perfect example, the building where the Nightclub/Apartment was, had been sitting empty for years. I moved away a the end of the decade, when locally owned little shops were replaced by SunglassHut and the famous cuban coffee shops were replaced by a thousand Starbucks and the main pedestrian shopping strip became clogged with doube baby strollers. Sorry for the rant. But this move is part of my growing up. Great vid!

Nathan Lane’s role as Albert from this movie literally taught me two things 1. it is okay to be who you are (I have since come out as Bisexual) 2. Always have style no matter what you do, and don’t care how you look, as long as you look good No matter how much Albert comes off as excessive he always maintains a style and look that shows his inner confidence and self respect and he can wear anything from pink to rainbow but he wears it well. Love this character and I love Nathan Lane. I also love Robin, he was so good in his film, you can tell he has good chemistry with Nathan You can see his characters love for Albert and the respect he holds for him. and apparently doing the interviews for the film, Nathan hadn’t come out as gay yet, so Robin would protect him, and direct the questions back to him if they approached Nathan’s sexuality and he wasn’t comfortable answering.

The reason they are not wearing much clothing on the streets in background cause …it’s Miami south beach. Meaning it’s hot there’s a beach like two or three streets away. It’s what everyone does there especially tourists. Why change 50 times right. If one goes to south beach … the beach shopping and drinking is basically all one does there. And it’s sandy. So wearing fancy dressed clothing is a bit redundant.

It’s a little hard these days what it was like for them in that time. The insecurities on Alberts behalf was stemmed from a lot of hatred that he likely received in those times. They would’ve grown up in a super hateful world and unsafe for them. Even Armand’s behaviour he took a more aggressive route to deal with the nastiness that they had through life. They both really loved each other underneath it all they just took two different ways to deal with it. So while it doesn’t make much sense now, it really speaks to how it was in even the 90s. But the underneath kind of shows they lived in their own protected world and these people came to interrupt it with their own misinformed attitudes which ultimately they fixed in the end. The only thing I couldn’t stand was Val Tbh he just wanted everyone in a lie and even Barbara was more than happy to go along with it.

48:56 Armand doesn't need an arc for the purpose of this movie. As he said himself, he knows who he is and doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks about it. He only acted the way he did thinking of his son's happiness and future while also trying to keep Albert happy too. He made mistakes in his approach, but he's just one guy and what can you do when youre being torn between your child and your spouse? I've also never understood why so many people reacting think he's an asshole at the start of the film when clearly the point is that he's already absolutely dedicated to Albert the whole time. Albert wants the palimony agreement and tries so hard to be what Armand wants and his reactions are sarcastic in turn because in his head, and all outward evidence already shows, that he only wants Albert as Albert. Now, I will also say that Albert was probably internalizing a lot with all the diets and weight changes and worsened with Armand's lack of reaction, but if he never told Armand until that night at the beginning that all the changes were meant for him, he may have been just silently supporting Albert thinking they were personally motivated changes. Armand was always in Albert's corner.

I think Albert and Armand are SO against the idea of marriage because of all the stuff the Senator's wife mentioned: it symbolizes tradition and "morality" and old-fashioned ideas about families and love and households - AKA all the stuff that's caused two gay men tons of trauma, rejection, heartbreak, and even danger. Plus, back in 1996, it was literally illegal for gay people to get married, so Albert and Armand have probably worked very hard to convince themselves that marriage is an unnecessary or even unwanted thing.

I think the age thing was definitely a big part of it because Val was 20 and still in college.

You don't think it's maybe because their 20-year-old child (and in the US that's still a child - they're not even old enough to drink) wants to marry a barely 18 year old? That raised no red flags to you, to the point you figured it must all be about some chip on their shoulder, and they must simply be against ALL marriage?

@@mortisrat Well, they objected before they even heard how young his fiancé is, so that probably wasn't a major factor (though I 100% agree with you that the idea DOES raise big red flags, especially in 2024). And while you're right that they both mention his young age when objecting, the extremity of their objections seems to encompass much more than just "oh, you're too young to marry" - they both seem disturbed by the idea that Val might want to get married at ALL. But hey, if that's not how you see it, no harm no foul.
@nandam3779

Yeah, no. It's because the kids are so young. It wasn't "literally illegal" for gay people to get married. There were no laws against it because it didn't exist. They didn't need to convince themselves that marriage was unnecessary or unwanted, simply because it never occurred to anyone that it could ever happen. Definitely Armand and Albert would have gone through trauma as gay boys and men, but this would not have been part of that trauma. You're viewing it from a very 2020s lens.

One of my all time favorite movies. It is based on the French film La Cage aux Folles which is much older. It may be a bit dated now but back in the nineties it was ground breaking. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a gay couple. And those two great actors decided to play against stereotype and have Robin play Armond which I think was brilliant. We would have assumed Nathan would be Armond. And I agree with you that Hank was the best.

90’s were in limbo with gay representation. Just started to be taken seriously , yet also depicted stereotypically, if you’re in on the joke it’s hilarious, if not it’s insulting. But either way the film advances acceptance through comedy. Props to Gene Hackman for really playing into and against type at the time. -In & out is another 90’s gay comedy with Kevin Kline and Joan Cusack

Looks like someone should take a holiday to Miami. Lots of skin cause it’s hot…even at night! Nothing like going outside at 11pm from your 70 degree house/apartment and walking into the „steam wall“ of 90 degree heat and 100% humidity! The street in front of the club runs along a strip of greenway/park then the beach is next to that. Street runs along the coast. While stationed at Homestead AFB (just south of Miami) we would head to an area called Coconut Grove. Very trendy back in 81 and 82 and a lot of fun. Cheers

I think part of why Armand(Robin Williams) is how he is, it's because it's the 90's and he is already 50 so when he grew up things were even more terrible for gay people. So I think that he had to develop that callous exterior to survive. Albert is so much sweeter and vulnerable, so for them being together and raising a kid in the 70s had to be hard, and Armand kinda had to be a hardass to keep them all safe.

What keeps me from liking this film is that the character of Val is really a prick, and the actor playing him is a cardboard cutout who looks like he's closer to 30 than 20.

Regarding some of the gender portrayals, the term LGBT started being used by activists in 1988, but in the mid-90s it was still pretty common to just see LGB in reference to sexuality and all the Trans & gender related stuff was treated as a separate issue.

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane's characters didn't have a problem with their son being straight, it was their ages they had an issue with. They thought he was too young to get married.

Nathan Lane tells the story that they went on Oprah to promote this movie. Lane was nervous because he didn’t want to talk about his sexuality. He confided in Williams about it who told him not to worry. The second the interview started to go in that direction, Williams went full Robin Williams and took over being a lunatic and distracting everyone with his antics.
