Mamma Mia 2 actually changed her mind about it, she has since done multiple seasons of Only Murders, and she didn’t want Donna to be dead but that was out of her control, so she agreed to be a part anyway just for the fans.

no she did not want Donna to be dead, rather she wasn’t sure she was able to do the same thing 10 years , she could only agree to what the writers did and she agreed just for the fans

If I remember correctly, Meryl had scheduling conflicts & that’s why she isn’t fully back in this one. Love this sequel. I discovered Lily James & her beautiful voice b/c of this movie. “I have a dream” is my favorite of her songs. Lily sounds so angelic singing it. It also came out a few years after my mom had passed, and I cried pretty hard in the theater during the “My Love, My Life” scene. Still makes me tear up to this day tbh. It’s not a perfect movie, but I don’t need it to be.

I love both of these films, though you can tell by the story structures that the first one was written as a true musical, and this one was written as a movie. And both are effective in bringing out strong emotions, which is the point of art, is it not? Glad you enjoyed them.

So, funny-ish/kinda sad story...after my grandfather passed, my mom and my grandmother watched Mamma Mia together. Mom was SURE Grammie wouldn't actually like the movie, and she was was surprised she even wanted to watch it, but Grammie needed a couple of hours out of her grief, so they put in this dvd because Grammie knew it was a musical. It was the first thing that ever made either of them laugh after everything they had been through (Granddad was sick a long time). They loved it so much, Mom bought it for Grammie for Christmas, and Grammie bought it for Mom for Christmas. They really bonded over it. I, not being an ABBA fan and rather annoyed by the fact that EVERY song is an earworm I can't get rid of for days afterward, never cared for the movie. Then, Grammie passed away and the following Mother's Day, this movie hit the theaters. I took Mom to see it on Mother's Day...to help her NOT think about her dead mother. To cheer her up. Because she had loved the first one so much, but watching it made her sad. So I thought, ok, well you and I will bond over this one, even though I don't like ABBA because I know you love them. I didn't know Meryl wasn't in it or that her character had died offscreen...so the movie I took her to so she wouldn't think about her dead mom is all about Sophie dealing with the fact that her mom is dead. As soon as we found out Donna was dead, I quietly asked Mom if she wanted to leave because I didn't want to put her through a sad experience. She was worried about the cost of the tickets, but I told her it was fine. Still, we stayed and watched the whole thing, and she had a good time. So did I because most of these were ABBA songs I didn't know as well so I didn't have to worry about having them knocking around in my head for the next 2 weeks. And then...Meryl came in on that last song. Mom cried. I cried. We held hands and bawled our eyes out. But it was good, in the end, and Mom said she had to get the dvd as soon as it came out so she could add it to her library, so I got it for her for Christmas. We watch both of them on Mother's Day now.

As to which film is "better", I've heard very conflicting things from people and even as to whether they like this one or not. I like both films for different reasons but the first one is just very nostalgic for me. It was fun seeing how it all happened in the flashbacks and Lily James is definitely the star of this film, but I am still upset they chose to kill of Donna. Meryl is known for not doing sequels and this is the first time she has ever done a sequel to a film she has done before, even though it was only a cameo (she is in Mary Poppins Returns which is technically a sequel but she didn't star in the first one). From what I've read, it was their choice to kill her off but Meryl was fine with it to give the younger cast more time to shine, since with Donna dead in present day they could tell more of her story via flashbacks. They felt it was more emotional and impactful that way. And it was, that song with them at the christening was so beautiful and it's especially emotional for mothers and daughters so it's understandable you wouldn't be AS openly emotional. Also, a lot of people have wondered how she died since they never explicitly say, but the point is it doesn't really matter. However, director Ol Parker said in an interview the original draft of the script revealed that Donna died of cancer. I actually like that it is never confirmed who the biological father is in the films because DNA isn't what's most important. Also, since Sam married Donna at the end of the first film he is Sophie's step-dad regardless. However, it has been confirmed to be Bill (who coincidentally is a Swede) by screenwriter Catherine Johnson and Phyllida Lloyd, director of the first film. But even without that confirmation, the first film and this one even more so hints heavily at it being Bill due to Sophie being named after and inheriting his aunt Sofia (who is the same one as Lazaros's mother who owns the property which Donna stays in), plus the obvious fact that Sophie has blonde hair and blue eyes like him. If you wanna look even further into it: Bill's twin is a reference to the line he says to Sophie in the first film "You're not going to tell me that you have a twin sister, are you?" I don't know how you feel about Sophie and Sky but a lot of people have noted that their chemistry is a little off in this one. Even if people didn't really root for them or like them together (which I actually did), they could feel their chemistry in the first one, which is understandable if you know that Amanda and Dominic Cooper (Sky) dated for about a year after meeting during the making of the first film, so by this point they had already been broken up for about a decade. They were also in different relationships and engaged/married by the time this film came out. Amanda is married to actor Thomas Sadoski and they have two children. Baby Sophie was played by Amanda's IRL daughter. 'Andante Andante' means 'gently' or 'slowly' in Italian. Musically, it is used to describe something at a moderately slow tempo. As to my favourite song/performance, it's hard to choose. But probably either Andante Andante or My Love My Life (the emotional song with Meryl, Lily and Amanda). Cast facts/cameos: The two male ABBA members both have cameos in the film: Björn Ulvaeus as a college chancellor during When I Kissed the Teacher and Benny Andersson as a piano player during Waterloo (Benny also appears briefly in the When I Kissed the Teacher scene). Despite playing mother and daughter, Cher is only three years older than Meryl Streep. Cher was originally offered the role of Tanya in the first film which she turned down. She also handpicked Andy Garcia to play Fernando. After appearing in the film, Cher recorded a full album of ABBA covers titled Dancing Queen. Jeremy Irvine (young Sam) has starred in films such as War Horse, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death and The Railway Man, the last in which he plays a younger version of Colin Firth's character (also stars Stellan Skarsgård). Hugh Skinner (young Harry) has a small role in 2012's Les Misérables which of course also stars Amanda Seyfried. Jessica Keenan Wynn (young Tanya) comes from a big acting family but she is not related to Christine Baranski. They do look so much alike though. Fun facts/details: There are some continuity errors, mainly the fact that Donna basically said her mum was dead in the first one ("Somebody up there has got it in for me. I bet it's my mother"). Also, in the first film when Sophie reads Donna's diary it is established that Donna hooked up with the three men in the following order: Sam, Bill and Harry. In the flashbacks in this one it's Harry, Bill and Sam (although she has sex with Bill last). They also look nothing like how she saw them in the quick flashback scene for obvious reasons. And in this one Tanya and Rosie meet Bill and Sam but in the first one they seem shocked to hear that Donna was with 3 guys back-to-back in such a short amount of time. Finally, in the first one, Donna says she didn't go back home when she got pregnant because her mother told her not to bother coming back. In this one it is implied that her mum got pregnant with her after a short fling herself (it's never explicitly said but the story strongly hints that Fernando MIGHT be Donna's father and Sofie's grandfather), but that's more her being hypocritical than a goof. Songs from the first film performed again: Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, I Have a Dream (in the beginning and the end of the first one/end of this one) and Thank You For The Music (Amanda sang it during the credits in the first one and a little snippet in the beginning of this one). Other songs performed/heard/seen in both films: The Name of the Game, sung by young Donna in this one, was a deleted scene in the first one (except then sung by Sophie). Knowing Me Knowing You, sung by young Donna and young Sam in this one, was played as an instrumental as Sophie walked down the aisle in the first one. Fernando, sung by Ruth and Fernando in this one, was the song Donna was humming before finding the guys in the goat house in the first one. Slipping Through My Fingers (the song Donna and Sophie sing while getting ready for the wedding in the first one) plays as an instrumental in the background before Sophie enters the church in this one. During the ending of When I Kissed the Teacher, a small boat is shown with the name "Chiquitita", a song sung by Donna, Tanya and Rosie in the first one. There is a musical number that was cut from this film sung by young Donna/Lily James, but is included on the soundtrack album and the scene was later released - I Wonder (Departure): kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6nSq5aghMyIaLcsi=IQVXiLwRux_AL-pP. The soundtrack also features The Day Before You Came sung by Meryl Streep. It was only recorded because it was one of Benny Andersson's and Richard Curtis' favorites ABBA songs and Meryl wanted to sing it, but it wasn't in the film as the lyrics didn't quite fit in with the story. When young Donna and young Harry are walking by the fountain and during Waterloo, he is wearing a Johnny Rotten t-shirt. This is referenced by the character in the first film. And Harry is just a socially awkward guy but he's also probably dealing with his sexuality and trying to be "straight" by propositioning Donna. When Sophie is walking in the church with her baby she is wearing a butterfly dress. In the flashback to young Donna walking in the same church holding baby Sophie she is wearing a butterfly necklace, further symbolizing their connectivity. Though this film is set in Greece (in the fictional island of Kalokairi), it wasn't shot there like the first one. Due to economic reasons the location for this one was the small Croatian island of Vis. Dame Julie Walters was given a day off from filming during the filming of the "Angel Eyes" number so she could attend a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, where she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. The cast and crew surprised her and welcomed her back singing "There Is Nothing Like a Dame" from the musical South Pacific. Lily James had a broken toe while filming the Waterloo scene (she broke her toe on-set by running into a lighting stand). She also had an ingrown toenail and was limping when she had to cartwheel during The Name of the Game. Writer and director Ol Parker said Tanya's line "Be still my beating vagina" after she sees Fernando was only added into the script once Andy García was cast, because he is "that hot". Great news: A third film has been confirmed but no word yet on cast or release date. However, Amanda Seyfried has said she would be on board for another one, Julie Walters has said it would be her one and only reason for coming out of retirement and, despite her character's death, Meryl Streep is willing to return in whatever form that may be.

I actually prefer the sequel because 1) it leans into the campiness/silly humor even more in a way that really, really works 2) the pacing is a bit tighter 3) I felt like it did a better job of centering the more interesting characters/relationships - ie less Sophie and Sky (and their friends) who are kind of a snoozefest on their own (no shade on the actors, just how the characters are written), more of Donna's friendship trio, more of the mother-daughter relationship(s), and the romances between Donna and the three men 4) the emotional climax being the mother-daughter relationship....to be fair, I haven't watched the original Mamma Mia! in a long time...only downside is less Meryl Streep
