I go crazy by Paul Davis. It’s right in my own vocal range so whenever I hear it I belt it out haha. That’s one of the reasons songs of that era last. The vocal range wasn’t a challenge to sing along, unless you’re trying to match pipes with Steve Perry or Mickey Thomas or Brad Delp. I’m not saying anyone in the audience sounds like the artist but the songs practically invited you to join in. That sticks with you.

A few years ago, one of my Facebook friends posted the line "Baby come back!" and people kept posting the next lines until we got most of the song, line by line, on the thread and every line contributed by a different person across age ranges. I would say 60’s&70’s with the 80’s a close 3rd to the sixties…Lots of new influences in the 60’s that changed R&R forever. The eighties had a new, unique sound that is easily identifiable but still doesn’t impact music like the 60’s did.

You don’t think WAP has staying power?! I have no illusions about earlier musicians being more virtuous than “artists” today, but yes, they put more “soul” into their music. And there was a higher level of musicality involved. Now things are auto tuned to death and vulgarity is mistaken for daring and creativity.

I had to look him up since I never saw that soap, I recognize him from something; probably one of those cheesy movies you mentioned. He's a handsome man even now in his 70s. I love his soap character name, "Ridge Forrester". You just know that a guy with that moniker is going to be a hunk with a chiseled jaw and full head of hair! When we named our baby son in 1992, my husband and I wanted a name that reflected our love of the outdoors (well, my ex was going for "manly"). We named him "Forrest Jack". I thought "No one is going to tease him with such a "manly" name!" WRONG! Two years later a very popular movie came out starring Tom Hanks. Ever since, my son has complained that everyone at school tells him to "Run, Forrest, run!" pretty much daily! OOPS! Oh well, I still love his name that he shares with my favorite uncle who is no longer with us.

Let me tell you why this song is so great. First, the beginning is captivating. The casual bass beat backed by the crisp drum rhythm immediately catches your attention, and you know the song is going somewhere. Then the melodic guitar riff plays, and it’s pure 70s magic. Lots of tremolo on a dreamy phrase that only adds to the building suspense. The story unfolds, and we learn of the devastating heartbreak that has occurred. We’ve all been there and instantly have compassion, sympathy, and hope that the woman comes back…but we never know for sure. The vocal harmonies are sheer joy, and Beckett’s shattered soul begs for his lost love in a way that makes us feel his anguish like our own. His agony is almost palpable, and his honesty-admitting wearing a “mask of false bravado” until the sun goes down and he gets that “empty feelin’ again” brings a tear to the eye. We feel your pain brother. We’re sorry. We know it’s just awful. The bridge somehow expresses a sensation of hopeful rebirth or reunion, with the dynamic keyboard notes soaring through a major tonality leading to the epic pause before the final, heart-rending choruses. Just a masterpiece on all levels-musical, artistic, lyrical, spiritual. I was 13 when this song ruled the airways. It crushed me when I went through an adolescent break up with my girlfriend-cut to the bone. In fact, it was so impactful, I couldn’t listen to it for a long time. Now, it brings a bittersweet nostalgia of the late 70s, junior high school, first girlfriends, and the unpredictable paths of love. It remains one of the greatest songs of the era. It’s society’s loss that no one makes ‘em like this anymore.

In the same way that the 80s doesn't exist without Everybody Wants to Rule the World / Tears for Fears, the 70s don't exist without Baby Come Back. I was 10 years old when this song came out... I had a girlfriend at the time (I mean, come on, it was the 70's - every 10 year old was actually 20 years old) and this girl was the light of my life, one of the most beautiful girls in school - both inside and out. I remember hearing this song late at night (I would go to sleep listening to the radio) and it made me imagine (against my will) a time when we might no longer be together - and it absolutely tore a hole through me. It broke me. I remember tearing up hearing this song. I could feel every word. I could not imagine life without her and how much I would miss her. Then one day, it wasn't my imagination... we just drifted away from each other and 46 years later there is still a scar there. Music is so powerful. What a fantastic song. Thank you again, Adam.

@@ProfessorofRockAt a record store in Ohio. They did that a lot with older songs. In the early 2000's, I actually found a CD single with BOTH "18 And Life" and "I Remember You" by Skid Row. I still have it.

Great episode as always, Professor! Always loved this song.....can play it 20 times in a row. One of the best parts of the song are the solos--Peter's solos in this really just hit home in a big way, and the feel and control of it are outstanding. I've maintained this for a while, but I think that Aldo Nova was highly inspired by this song to write "Ball And Chain".......the ascending chromatic riff seems to be a direct influence. :)

I know that story so well ! I lived at the drummers house through it all ! He sold the house to the keyboardist and it became an amazing infamous recording studio where a lot of great records were recorded over the years. And I did the intern becomes engineer becomes producer steps there. Actually Jeff Porcaro loved to cut tracks there over the years by as well !

"Baby Come Back" was definitely one of the gems I heard when I was so high in the early 80s. My favorite pop culture placement up to 2023 is its placement in Transformers (2007) when Shia LaBeouf is trying to romance Megan Fox with Bumblebee pumping out tunes from his dashboard. Nifty hearing Peter talk about how Player had been on tour with Gino Vannelli. That's like a hand in a glove.

That's one of the reasons I couldn't have asked for a better set of parents, @@ProfessorofRock. If the first rule of thumb in our household was that everybody pulled their weight and did all they could to behave themselves, the second rule was - music. It was awesome having both the music of the moment and the music in our Personal Collection at your fingertips. We also had great friends (teaching colleagues of my parents) who gave us a lot of the killer material we had. We occasionally switched between *Symphony No. 5,* Neil Diamond's *Jazz Singer* soundtrack and *Toto IV.* Bliss!

POR you keep hitting the right chords. Baby Come Back is definitely part of our lexicon whenever it is appropriate. One of those fav when pops on the radio. Very much in the vane of Hall and Oates She's Gone; feeling that loss. From a 70s kid always a good listen.
