1987 was grand year for music with Def Leppard Whitesnake and Guns N Rose releasing landmark albums on the harder side of Rock, George Michael, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson dominated the charts with their latest releases, with blockbuster albums filled with hit singles . U2 and REM were taking College rock to the masses with the Joshua Tree and Document, it was an amazing time to be young and embracing all of this music as the soundtracks of our lives. IN the middle of all of this a band that formed in London in 1985 named Cutting Crew released a single that haunted listeners and leap frogged over all of the previous acts I mentioned to hit Number one on the billboard hot 100.
I Just Died In Your Arms tonight was a game changer for sure, it also flew to #1 in Canada, Norway, and Finland, and reached the top five in the UK, South Africa, Sweden, and Switzerland and it’s still attracting new listeners, as one of the go to songs for other cultural mediums when trying to create that perfect aura and feeling of the 80s. It was used in Season 3 of Stranger Things, in an iconic moment in that episode and it was used in the Lego Batman movie. It’s just a potently nostalgic song that puts you in a trance. And it’s one of those song that’s a mystery, many wanted to know what the lyrics meant? Well I was fortunate to spend some time with Cutting Crew lead singer and songwriter Nick Van Edde who not only gives us insight into the mystery but also shares how he created, with his acoustic guitar, he gives an exclusive breakdown performance.

The entire Broadcast album is excellent. Nick Van Eede and Kevin Scott MacMichael (RIP) were ace songwriters and every single track on that album is 80s pop/rock perfection. This single is surely their biggest hit and is the only song of theirs that most people remember. But tunes like "Life in a Dangerous Time", "The Broadcast", and "Any Colour" are my favorites by far. A serious gem of a record.

Cutting Crew was part of the British invasion of the '80s that included Duran Duran, Culture Club, Johnny Hates Jazz, Wang Chung, Human League, Breathe, Tears for Fears, Fine Young Cannibals, Wham!, and a long list of many others that made the '80s amazing.

This is such a great song, so thanks for sharing the story behind it. I saw Cutting Crew live in 1987, entirely on accident. They were opening for Starship, and my Mom and I happened to be visiting King's Dominion theme park in Richmond, VA, the weekend they were performing there, so we decided to see the show. It was amazing. Starship was good, but Cutting Crew would have blown the roof off if we hadn't already been outdoors. Was my third big concert ever, and I still remember it vividly. That whole Cutting Crew album was fantastic, top to bottom, and they were a tight live band with great energy.

I think because in that era rock bands and most pop bands (most, not all) played their own instruments and mostly wrote their own songs. Duran Duran were as "poppy" as any band in the 80's but they were all really good musicians. You don't see a lot of that today. Rick Beato did a video about that a few weeks ago, how record labels don't trust todays artists to write their own stuff.

Cutting Crew had another great hit in 1987 with "I've Been In Love Before," which hit No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of '87. In the summer that year, they had a minor top 40 hit (in the U.S.) called "One for the Mockingbird" that's an overlooked '80s gem (in my opinion).

I graduated in 1987, and saw The Cutting Crew open for the Bangles. Originally booked for a outdoor concert, changed into a indoor event, earlier that day, general admission. As soon as school let out, we hauled ass 30mi to the arena at OU, and were the first in the door, dead center, 5-6ft away from the stage. The view was amazing to a 17yr old, especially when The Bangles were on.

Best song I ever heard. I grew up with my parents playing me the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Queen, the Stones, Neil Diamond just to mention a few, but the 80's was the music that really spoke to my teenage soul and this song out of all the 80's was the one that stirred my soul more than any other. Nick's voice and songwriting just raises the hairs on the back of my neck. I have been listening to that whole album ever since. I almost choked laughing when Mark Lamaar, host of Never mind the Buzzcocks claimed that the alternative rejected song title was 'Well that's that then, bacon sandwich?' after the intro's round.

For me, this is pretty much the perfect pop-rock song. It's middle-of-the-road, and I don't mean that in a negative way, because it combines rock with pop elements. It's catchy, radio-friendly, but still has a certain edge and it's just a good sounding tune 👍.

The iconic guitar sound from this song became something that every guitarist at the time wanted and tried to emulate. It's still popular with young guitarists today. The song helped establish Kevin MacMichael as an internationally known and respected guitar player. Sadly, he was only 51 when he passed away of lung cancer.

I was 11 when this song came out… I listened to it over and over with my Walkman when I was bullied as a kid and the words comforted me… “I shoulda walked away” … yes, I should have walked away from those mean kids instead of let them mistreat me. 9 in 87. Used to put on the radio after school and in summer. Light rock, new wave, metal, r&b, all those genres were familiar to me. Around 91 started to delve into classic rock and hard rock.

The first time I heard it was like hearing "Where The Streets Have No Name" for the first time, I thought , What!, Who is that?! You'd recognized the first cords from then on every single time.
