This is the kind of machine my mother earned our living on when I was very young. I have a good electric machine but I'd like to find a treadle. They're so worth saving and will no doubt work for many years more. They look very nice too. Well done!

the machine I had was very similiar and it had a leather belt. I went to a tack and saddle shop to buy a replacement. the tack shop showed me how they fixed it.It was the same type of repair you would find on a flat belt seen on some farm machinery for antique equipment

Hi! This was an interesting video, but you have made the job a little harder than it needs to be. Speaking as a VERY lazy man, instead of all the crawling and fiddling about on the floor, you can just attach the new belt to the end of the old one and pull it through the machine. I have a Singer Sphynx, similar to your own, made in 1906. Great machine!
@garysansum18345 жыл бұрын
before you remove the old belt from the machine, tape the end of the new belt to the end of the old belt to drag it up through the machine. This is an electrician's trick to running wires. Obviously, the belt was cut before the start of the video...suppose to be cut while the belt is in the machine.

Thank you sir, good advice. I am still amazed people still watch this video, the quality is not very good (even for year it was shot). I leave it up for legacy purposes (to keep track of my receding hairline).

@@jlumley I'm in the process of restoring my grandmother's treadle. It hasn't been used since 2008. So, I am watching quite a few videos on the subject. So far, I've cleaned it out and soaked it in sewing machine oil. It had stiffened up a bit and it isn't perfect but it helped...the old belt can turn it again...I have two new belts ordered. Also, my plan it to slip a piece of plywood under it, not sure if that type of sewing machine was ever meant to run on carpet.

Sounds like an interesting project I hope you post before and after shots.

Hi, do you know if they still make leather belts at all? Are the rubber ones as good, then? I've got this beautiful vintage machine but the leather cord was broken and I didn't have a clue of how to replace it, I'm on a learning curve here! so thanks for the video.
@jlumley12 жыл бұрын
@nuttyteacher yes of course they make leather belts, these rubber ones are better more practical but it depends. If your a traditionalist then you would want to use leather to restore the machine as close the the original as you can. But if you like me actually wanted to use the machine to sew with and to mend clothes then go with the more modern rubber.

Help please? Can I use a slightly thinner treadle leather belt for my old Singer machine? The existing belt is about 0.7 cm thick and the replacement available is 0.45 cm.

@jlumley Thanks for your reply, I have a 1920's Singer number 15 in stunning mint condition which is quite rare and although I'd like to be loyal to the materials originally used in its making I can't keep it as an exhibition piece. My husband already considers it a waste of space so I need to make it sew to prove him wrong! Rubber, then.

@piriyyaa the cord i used was not the type with hooked end, it had a small mushroom shaped terminal that is pressed into the other hollow rubber tube end. May need a strong pair of hands to do this.

Kadija Allie Haha, or you can be lucky like me and have a dad who is a rigger and has about 13 machines and he gives you one. Seriously though, I have a Singer 31-15 head on a Singer table from 1940(my guess, I forgot the serial number) and its still in perfect working order after all the work its been put thru, im just waiting on a replacment needle clamp and it will run like a charm.
@iloveRUSSIAAA9 жыл бұрын
Kadija Allie If you are going to purchase an older industrial machine (older ones were built better) go with a Singer 188ki or a Singer 31-15 for straight stitch work.

check craigslist or your local paper, yard sales and thirft stores. also ask at your local vacuum cleaner/seeing center store. I paid $25 (mines not fancy or a singer, but they work for ever) for mine but had to drive a hour each way
@elfy6010 жыл бұрын
For Jessica Bohannon. You may already have found out, but according to www.singerco.com/support/machine-serial-numbers your sewing machine was made in 1912!

If you have a motor boss on the side, you should be able to attach a motor...join Vintage Sewing Machines on FB if you aren't a member and they can guide you.

product information only has the description: "HEAVY DUTY RUBBER TREADLE SEWING MACHINE BELT", I think it is a cottage business whoever cuts the rubber tube to length and applies the grommet on the ends.
