Sorry to disagree - there are key switches, just too low down on the keyboard to see. You can click on the little keyboard icon (halfway down the right side) and then move the keys witches up or down on the keyboard. As always they are C, C#, D and E.

Hi there, nice video! There are key switches in the Discover orchestra. At 4:30 you can see a lock and piano keys above the tremolo articulation. You have to click and hold the piano keys and drag your cursor to the right to make the key switches visible.

Thanks for the BBC demo. I especially enjoyed your March at the end and will be downloading the midi to play with. When I downloaded BBC a year or so ago I also made a Cakewalk project template for the orchestra. It should be easy to drag the files to the correct instruments. Cheers.

Hi Samuel I enjoy your videos especially the free BBC symphony orchestra discover which I use myself.However you stated that you cannot use keyswitching but YOU CAN ! On the right of the large icon that displays all the positions of the orchestra there are two small icons of a lock and some small keys. if you try to drag the small keys icon to the right you will bring up the key switches You can set the switches wherever it's convenient for you and use accordingly. Hey presto !!! Hope this was helpful

Samuel - I have to say how brilliant your channel is. I love your enthusiasm for what you do and it comes across really well in your videos. Having watched many of your other videos I was presented this one by the power of the mighty KZbin algorithm and I could not have been happier. 20 years ago I bought the Orchestral Score to Raiders March and I tried using Halion Symphonic Orchestra and Cubase without any idea what I was doing. It did not go well. In the past few weeks I unearthed it again with a view to having another go. I started with BBC Discover and have added Core now too. If I may, how would you recommend representing the opening bars where it’s the trombones - the short patch I use still has an audible tail on it (even with no built in reverb)such that it’s not a tight note and it’s becoming a mess? Any suggestions? I’ve not downloaded the midi files to my DAW as I’m typing this whilst parked!
@SamuFL10 ай бұрын
Yes, I see what you mean. Even turning the tighness all the way up, the BBCSO sound is very lush and the staccatissimo doesn't really feel like a staccatissimo. For whatever reason, the solo horn appears to be the tightest? You could try layering that over the trombone (that is, if it reaches low enough, which I think it does). But to be really honest, I don't think you will ever get that really crisp pp staccatissimo sound that you would need for a good representation. Not with BBCSO Core at least. 8dio's century brass trombones library has some ridiculously dry and short fanfare articulation. That one would work -- but 8dio is very hard to properly blend with BBCSO, the libraries imho are over-priced when they aren't on sale. Musio's Cinebrass Trombones Staccatissimo is also much better than BBCSO's. You can check that one out 30 days free trial. It's just - the brass is BBCSO's weak spot. Sorry I can't really help out here. Oh, and THANK YOU! I highly appreciate your nice comment :D

Thanks for your reply Samuel. I think you make some great points and I’ll take a look at those other options. It’s such an iconic track that it would be impossible to faithfully recreate every instrument. I guess I just wanted to build each track layer by layer to get a sense of how each contributed to the overall piece. We are very familiar with the trumpets but I love seeing and hearing how the other instruments combine to give it the full impact. I sometimes feel sorry for those orchestral players as they don’t get the credit they deserve. Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to following more of your videos. I just wish I used Studio One or you used Cubase 😂

The lack of different timbres in the horns made it obvious that I was listening to samples, but the rest of the orchestra sounded passably good. This is quite a generous set of features for a *free* virtual instrument, so I can't really complain!
@SamuFL Жыл бұрын
Yes. There is only one dynamic layer and only one sample for everything. I think what it's really really good for is as an educational tool. It's free, and the sound is good enough to get an idea of what a composition might sound like for real. And you get basically all the sections of a symphonic orchestra.

Thanks, Samuel. I enjoyed your transcription of the Raiders theme. I'm mainly here for interest's sake, and to support people making music and videos using BBCSO. I gravitated to Core last August, and I recently released my first video of original music using nothing but Core. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3fOmZ6Ods1jm9U is the link if anyone's interested. Would you mind if I tried importing the MIDI from your Raiders theme into Core and see what it sounds like in that? (Not for publication, of course). Cheers from New Zealand.

I really enjoyed your video. It's a nice study of the different sections of the orchestra 😃. I don't know why, but to me it has a sort of "Pirate" vibe 😅 Use the midi however you want! I'm half is its useful to you! However, be warned... I tried the "mode" toggle in my daw, and it sounds - as is it out of the box - horrible in the core version. The percussion is all over the place, and the sound is very unbalanced. Obviously with core you can and should make use of the multi-tounge articulations and such... But I'm sure it can serve as a good basis for an awesome result!
@CraigRodmellMusic Жыл бұрын
@@SamuFL Hey, thank you for listening! I'm rather proud of that little piece, which - once I had the original theme - more or less composed itself in my head. That's where BBCSO Core is such a MARVELLOUS tool! It's the first piece of orchestral music I have written that has been properly realised. So my piece made you think of Pirates!? Well, why not!? Nothing wrong with that! That's the thing with purely instrumental music - the imagination can run wild as to what it's about. I put in some fake "tuning up" at the beginning, as otherwise there would have been nothing but silence under the opening screens. The day I finished the visuals, my sister and niece arrived at my place, where they were going to be staying for a week. Naturally, I wanted to show my new video to them. My niece is another amateur composer herself, and during my "tuning up", she asked me, "Who played this?" and her jaw absolutely dropped when I said with a smile, "I did!!!" She thought she was listening to an actual symphony orchestra. She had no idea it was a software orchestra! Now how about this? I'll subscribe to you, if you'll subscribe to me? That will mean that I'll get to hear any more of your creations when you release them, and you'll get to hear mine. Thanks in advance, and greetings on a brilliantly fine, cold Winter's day in New Zealand.

@beadlesastout9 ай бұрын
This free library wasn't the best advert for spitfire. The instruments have incorrect release samples or bugs in the room sounds. Listen to the trumpet patch. It's horrid. There's also the room sound missing from some of the notes in the string patches. It's all a poor advert for the full library.
@SamuFL9 ай бұрын
Well, as an owner of the full library, I beg to disagree. Yes, it's a freebie. Yes, there are freebies with more consistent sound (e.g., by ProjectSAM) - but BBCSO Discover is imho a GREAT tool to learn the basics of virtual orchestration. It's really very extensive and lightweight, which makes it very useful for bloody beginners.
