I want to add few points 1) The best advantage for PhD is better chances of getting GC through EB1 or EB2(NIW) category which no job can provide. 2) Academia pays less than industry, there's no doubt about it. 3) Academia can give you a stable and secure life, once you become a lecturer/professor and get a tenure your whole life is set. In Industry, you will always have to be on your toes in case you're fired. 4) People who choose academia have an inclination towards people and world welfare, science growth etc rather than salary and vice-versa for people in industry.
