I'm an Indian student at University of Alabama, the campus is generally safe, but there are some areas off-campus where it gets shady during the night. The gas station around my apartment is safe (I've been around there at 2 am). In 🇺🇲, no matter how safe a place is, it takes one lunatic to cause a tragedy.

As a student, I traveled to Australia to pursue my Bachelor's degree. I spent seven amazing years there but decided to pursue my Master's in America. I applied for a visit visa and went to the USA to tour and check out universities. However, after encountering a number of mentally unstable individuals, I made the decision not to apply to any American universities and will not be setting foot in the country again. My sister relocated to the USA for two years because her husband is in the British army and was stationed there. She experiences a great deal of anxiety when her children go to school, fearing that something terrible may happen. Just a few days ago, a classmate of my niece brought a knife to school, shocking everyone. It's worth noting that they are only in fifth grade.

Even if I am not an indian student, I still feel a lot of fear when living in America. I've been here my whole life, and still paranoid every corner I turn. Of course, crime rates range from state to state, but I think the universal fear of violence and crime has increased tremendously for EVERYONE regardless of ethnicity. I don't want to take away from the hate crimes committed specifically towards indian people, but rather, to paint a light on how violence is viewed by a native citizen who has lived here for my entire life. I hope the best for any of you prospective students who are looking to come to the United States, and don't let this hinder you. The opportunities you can find in the United States will be worth it down the line if you put in the work.

For any students aspiring to come to the US here's what I have to say: The problem with gun violence is very real. The US is a huge country. However, places like downtown Atlanta are pockets where incidents happen more often due to various reasons. I once walked just a few blocks west of University Commons (A GSU dorm) and found myself in a very pleasant suburban environment with children on cycles and people going about their day without a worry in sight. Even when commuting on foot to the University halls (through Downtown), I never felt threatened. Here's when I did feel unsafe: The recent shootings by the gas station (mentioned in the video). GSU recently had a problem with a lot of people gathering on campus for car meetups. It consisted of muscle cars speeding through the streets of downtown as people recorded them doing drifts and donuts around intersections. Is it not obvious that such gathering should be avoided by everyone, especially students? The shooting happened due to a road rage incident caused by the cars blocking all the intersections. A man fired into the air hoping to disperse the crowd and escape the mob of people blocking his car. Bottom line is that you as a student can avoid such mishaps. Staying aware of your surroundings is a must anywhere not just in the US. Nevertheless we can only hope that gun control is implemented better in the States.

The reality is that US citizens in big Democrat cities, even with 8000 dollars per month salary are unable to pay their rent and are doing extra job to stay afloat. There is rampant homelessness, crimes due to mental and drug issues, unclean streets with needles, human waste in the streets due to homeless drug addicts, higher inflation than india. Same issue is happening in UK and EU. So Indians should have some self respect and dignity and should first learn the reality in US and Europe before migrating for jobs and settlement.

Absolutely true! There are many who get top ranks and still not get into top colleges. Their mistake is that they are from UP and here, the competition is just insane. Delhi candidates are getting top engineering colleges at 2-3 times of the rank required. You can't do much. So much competition and the number of seats are less. Only people who get advantage are those who have reservation/ delhi candidates/ candidates of states which have less population.

If you are new to the US or new to an American city, do some homework before you wove there. Also, couple of things that might help: 1. Stay away from the "hoods". In urban areas, it's not always practical to avoid hoods, because one block may be safe, but the next one may be dangerous. 2. Don't wander around neighborhoods in the evenings/ nights unless you know it's safe. 3. If you get attacked by thieves, don't try to fight back, unless you have a gun and know how to use it, because most thieves are armed. If you move to a city or state (especially a liberal city), learn more about the crime situation and laws there. For example, according to California law, any theft below $900 dollars in value is not serious enough to prosecute, so the criminals have no fear there.

Thank you so much for covering such an important topic. Wishing at least in the coming years the US Govt realizes the fallacy of allowing guns. It’s seen as one of the most modern and developed nations but I feel very much hurt hearing about how they are unable to see this fallacy and correct it. Life is too valuable to get randomly wasted like this by petty defensive / offensive acts done by people who aren’t in their right mind. I feel in this regard India is way more developed in its approach to ownership of guns. Gun and drug violence is a big problem in California. There are some rich Neighborhoods and gated communities that are probably safe. Go to downtown LA at any time of the day and you are at risk of finding out. The thing is here whenever there is a crime the identities are kept hidden and they are very good at putting things under the carpet. In my college, there was a girl who got assaulted and raped for three straight days before she was able to escape from her captive(who was also a university student). The police pr team said there was a sexual assault charge and nothing was revealed. Not a single media outlet reported this. I came to know because there was a protests at my university. If something like this happened in India think about how the Indian and western media would have reported this. Either your relatives are in denial/unaware or they are trying to impress there relatives in India by lying to them.

@@photosynth359 I know crime happens in California, but my relatives haven't experienced it, they live in a relatively safe area, not everyone there is a victim of a crime. I don't think you know but in India a lot of criminals or abusers who are rich get by easily by bribing the officers. A lot of the times the crimes aren't even reported. The police and the judiciary system are highly corrupted compared to the USA.

I urge my fellow Indian students to stay in India and grow your careers here. Its never been a great time to be in India and start your own business or work for a tech company in India and learn new skills.
