Very confusing because according to science there’s only two mechanisms for vocal folds vibration, m1 (TA dominant) and m2 (CT dominant). Every teacher has a different definition of mixed voice, chest voice, and head voice.

Hey thanks for your comment...yes, indeed, vocal registers (and singing technique) can be confusing. I find one of the biggest problems is with teachers who speak too much 'science speak' to singers who just want to sing better. My goal is to always simplify things in a way that singers can understand without being overwhelmed. I use metaphors a lot for learning. And yes, your explanation is somewhat correct but leaves out a lot of the story. Vocal registers occur because the voice has two amplifiers (the throat and mouth). The throat creates chest voice and the mouth creates the sensations of head voice. When a singer moves smoothly through these resonators it creates the mix or middle voice and the movement between resonators is smooth. Hence my car transmission analogy. Although the sound waves are always moving through and being affected by both resonators, we still need to be able to control which resonator is dominant and providing the most amplification. When it comes to the science of voice I trust my friend and great teacher John Henny. I learned the above from him. When I need to learn the science behind the voice I call him...you should too.
