The passion and the powerful images of the poetry, with the beautiful melody, 5:29 and stunning harmony and guitar work of John Munro (R.I.P.), speaks to the universal longing for freedom, and helps to inspire all of us to support that spirit, and find the courage to break the chains that bind any of us.

Saw Eric and John at the last European show ever on Fri 11 Sept 09 Peebles.Absolutely brilliant-a pleasure and honour to have been there. He sang this for me!(Iasked him at the interval) The greatest folk singer songwriter of all time. He should be world famous because of writing songs like this and "the band played waltzing Matilda" Enjoy your retirement Eric!

I have been a fan for about 40 years now yet never saw the lads live. My last chance got snowed out (sigh). Eric & John did a DVD about a year ago - best concert DVD I own. The closed with Singing The Spirit Home - best version yet - sent shivers up your back. I won't post any - go buy it! I had to get it from Scotland!

Saw im and his band sing this in Winnipeg Canada around 1994 I think I have been at all his concerts in Winnipeg or surrounding areas since. Great story teller.

@KennyT1955 It is called "Eric Bogle Live at Stonyfell Winery" which, according to Eric's site, is available through Greentrax Recordings, Scotland. I got my copy from MusicScotland - they have excellent international service - even give prices in currency of your choice.

Saw him at the queens hall in edinburgh and managed to video Waltzing Matilda. My special memory of seeing them live. This song is absolutely brilliant and I love the ending especially. Amazing.

They came for him in the morning, an hour before dawning The pale white moon was waning in the African sky The cell door flew wide open, they stood looking at him He saw no mercy in their hearts, no pity in their eyes As they took him and they bound him, tied his trembling hands behind him He felt his courage leave him, his manhood disappear His legs would not support him, so from the cell they dragged him He sobbed and screamed and cursed them in his loneliness and fear Chains, chains, chains How many souls have died in freedom's name To some it is a way of life, to others just a word To some it is a snow-white dove, to some a bloody sword But until the last chains fall, freedom will make slaves of us all With faces closed and hidden the white guards walked beside him Indifferent to his pleading - they'd been down this path before But other eyes were watching, other ears were listening Other hearts beat with him in his final desperate hour From the darkness of that prison came the sound of his brothers singing Courage, their voices told him, you do not walk alone From their cells beyond the shadow he heard their voices echo As in love and pride and sorrow they sang his spirit home

saw then in our local theatre several years ago They didn't sing this song but the whole show music and interaction was great. Seems that together they are best both are unique if that's good English.

Listening to this song is my way of feeling close to Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran as they spend their last few hours on Earth tonight, though maybe a miracle will happen.

@rdvqc What's the DVD called mate ? I'd like to get a copy, like you I never got to see them live. If you had to get yours from scotland then I shouldn't have too much of a problem since I live there.

Both Apartheid and bombing of innocent people are wrong. Sad to say. Desperate people do desperate things. And sad to say. There's not a single country, race or ethnic group out there that can say they've not done something atrocious to another country, race, or ethnic group. I live in the USA and Lord only knows we have committed more than our fair share of sins.
