A singing warm up that lingers around the fifth scale degree
Subscribe!
kzbin.info...
In this singing warm up I focus our attention on the fifth scale degree. Two of our vocal warm ups begin starting on the fifth scale degree and the remaining two exercises consist of a pentatonic scale and the mixolydian mode. Mixolydian mode is of particular use to those in the popular music genres, as it found in blues, rock, jazz and virtually every other form of popular music.

Jeff, Thank you for these. Not only are you helping me to develop my voice, but also I learn some of the music theory I should have learned years ago. Here's wishing you even more success!

You're welcome! Thank you for your very kind words! I try to sneak a little music theory in when I can. Having a better understanding of it has helped me immensely in my studies and I really think it can help all of us be better musicians. If anything needs more explaining please let me know! All the best, Jeff

Hey Jeff, I love the mixolydian mode exercise. I screwed it up at first, but soon I was doing it by instict--i think, I mean that after a while it just worked. It was familiar from university, but I hadn't used it much until this video. Thanks for stretching us!

Jeff, is the tongue placement in our mouth important. I am watching you. Can you tell us where the tip of our tongue should be? Is there a neutral place? Thank you so much! I can feel the training helping me a great deal. It is a very good way to relax and enjoy the world. Billy

Great question! I don't talk about this nearly enough. For vocalizations - in other words, basically during all my videos on KZbin - it would be advantageous to have the tip gently touching the back of the from bottom teeth. The middle free to move, but generally lying in the well of the mouth, and the rear free to move and change shape. Thank you!! Jeff

I am practicing right now! Yes, I have seen you do this. I am doing the larynx hand placement drills. They have showed some things. with my voice. I will give you a update later on today. You do not have to reply to every response. You must be busy. I stand up and do them one after the other, knuckle under the chin, both sides of my checks are pressed in from the sides to keep the spacing of my jaw or upper and bottom teeth open and consistent and then the hand press on both side of the face. I can feel and hear the sound being generated a little different with all of them. Very interesting. One of them, I really came out clearer almost like a bell tone in that it had a purer pitch and sound quality. Thank you so much. I am on it now. Billy

Thanks Jeff awesome as always. I have a question i am tenor and every note in this video is comfortable but would it be healthy if i was practicing belting on hihger range warm ups?
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 9 жыл бұрын
+rabit088 Thank you! I really appreciate that! This is a great question, but I'm afraid I don't have a definitive answer. Belting has a necessary vocal affectation for some genres, particularly musical theatre, and consequently if you're going to sing in that genre some ability in this 'technique' is necessary. My channel is devoted to what I consider to be best singing practices. In other words, I want to give you the skills to sing for as long as you possibly can and keep singing without ever having to take a day off. The skills on this channel demonstrate and instruct in all the principals one needs to have a full range sound and utilize their entire range in a healthy sustainable way. When it comes to belting though, there is a lot of debate about how healthy it is. In singing instructor terms, belting is known as 'entering the call of the voice' and the general positioning of the vocal apparatus is that of a husky shout. To belt one must inhibit the vocal folds from transitioning from thyro-arytenoid dominant singing to the upper register of one's voice. That action is what gives belting it's unique character. The best advice I can give you, if you wish to practice belting along with these videos, is to be keenly aware of where your secondo passaggio is, and not belt more than a major second above that point. I would also limit the amount that that is done in order to maintain as much elasticity in your vocal folds as possible. I hope that helps. If anything in this needs further explanation, please get in touch! All the best, Jeff

I love your warm-ups and exercises! Is there an exercise you recommend for hitting notes on tune and staying in tune as you hold a note? Thanks.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Kish Thank you! Yes, the skill sets that will help you are in two parts. In singing in tune, we need to have a balance between airflow and vocal fold engagement. For this, short vowel exercises are best. I know it says 'beginner' but don't be put off by that. Try this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJuqgXSKqMebZrs During the video it will go from short vowel syllables to some sustained lines as well. Try that and get back in touch to let me know how it goes. I'll recommend another video at that point. While I'm thinking about it though, if you don't have any breathing technique or are unclear on the appoggio breathing method, check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXPTpZRriNmrfqM Best, Jeff

Thanks! Certainly! You could take this approach with any mode/scale or collection of pitches that you wanted to practice the relationships between. All the best! Jeff

Also, is it normal when a singer is working a range of his voice that he has never did before to not hear the changes of pitch that the piano is playing and find it with his voice. It appears to be a ear training issue. Not sure. I can go up to a certain range and then, it is not that I can't do it, but I struggle to clearly notate the pitch and find it with the voice. I hope this makes sense. I can do a lip trill and I can hear and watch what you are doing, but when it goes higher it all sounds the same with my voice. I maybe doing ok, but it is not as clear as in the lower ranges. Does the ears have more difficulty with the higher ranges of the tenor. It is more of a listening and a marking in my mind to keep going higher than the note before. I believe I may be singing the same notes. Unsure. Thank you, Jeff.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, basically to all the scenarios you've articulated. Ear training is usually easiest in our speaking range, so higher notes can be more challenging to hear and place. Hearing the intervals can also be more challenging until one gets used to it. As for how it could be going wrong, however, that could be any number of different things. If you're singing one note and not changing, that's usually someone who's stuck below the secondo passaggio. Notes that wander around but have a substantially different tone quality are another. I say all that to say, it depends on quite a few factors. Try recording yourself and having a listen after the fact. See if you can specifically identify what you are doing. Armed with that, it may illuminate what the problem is. All the best, Jeff
