One of the greatest joys in life is being a parent, and as a parent who’s also a musician, sharing music with my kids is one of my favorite things in the world. Since the girls were very little, and I could hear them hum little tunes that they would hear in movies and cartoons, I would use it as an opportunity to talk about music, and what makes a great singer or performer. Back then and also now I tell them that to be a good singer you have to be able to do two things - sing in pitch, and sing with emotion, so that anyone listening might feel that emotion too. I’ve never done formal lessons with them but rather little bits and pieces at a time when they are interested in learning something. Starting with playing pictures on the piano and having them match them. Then the next game was to find a middle C in the piano, and we did that for a while. Now I’m teaching them about how music theory and why some notes sound good together and others don’t. They are only 8, so juries still out on if they will continue loving music, but doing something like this makes me very happy. I tried singing this song on my own but I kept getting choked up. I think because it reminds me of my mom who was my absolute biggest fan and who was a constant champion in my journey to be a professional artist. Luckily the girls can use their voices when mine fails. There’s no doubt in my mind that my parents are listening. ❤️
