I have never done any sort of bookbinding. It's quite likely I never will. However, I do appreciate books (especially old ones), the history of things, beauty, and amazingly talented craftsman (you). So I will continue to watch your videos with appreciation and fascination. Thank you for sharing your gift my friend.

Amazing! I was cringing when you put the needle through the binding. I did understand this better even though I am still very new. I use a leather thimble that has tiny circles of metal in the pads. My reaction was that is what you could use. I finished 6 hardbound books as of today and thank you for your tutorials. I couldn't have done it without them. They are not perfect but will do. 🤗

Is there a specific reason for not tying the headband through the same hole as the kettle stitch, and rather going above/below it? The edge and headband looks beautiful together!
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
I did start through the kettle stitch hole. I guess I should have made that clearer. I don't have a strong opinion on whether you should be above or below or it doesn't matter. If strength is important then below so it can't pull up through the spine fold of the paper - well unless really yanked I guess. I think more people go below than above and that's what I did today. Once started the chance of me hitting the kettle stitch exactly are very low. All the best, Darryn

Thanks! No, but in principle I don't have anything against it. It might be a bit on the heavy side. You can always try. Good luck! Darryn

Headbands! Can’t get enough on this topic. Thanks so much for posting this video. I would love to see a video of a decorative sewing done on top of a primary sewing.

Hi! Google translate had some problems with the last word. But it gave me a heap of images of stub bindings. Funny you should ask. I was just about to go do some planning for a stub binding based on Arthur Johnson's book. It's not set in stone, but highly likely. All the best, Darryn

@@DASBookbinding Interestingly, stub bindings ("cartivanas" or "escartivanas") seem to have played a relevant role in traditional Spanish bookbinding. Many text books spend entire chapters to its applications. As many as ten according to the spanish Wikipedia page (es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartivana)

I appreciate your thoroughness when you demonstrate! I’ve been looking for a good video on how to construct a hollow back spine (is that what it’s called? I’ve been using that search term and keep not finding what I’ve been looking for), and I thought that you had done one specifically on that, but I’m not seeing it in your play list. I know I’ve seen you use it in a video, but it wasn’t addressed specifically, and I don’t remember which video it was. Could you point me in the right direction?

Many of the cased books have hollow spines, but 2 of the projects where hollow tubes are specifically added are the buckram covered library binding and forwarding a leather binding with laced on boards. All the best Darryn kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJS5eGhrnJiLsKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4LUnGx4d7Kojtk

That's the name of the 2nd edition and is now out-of-print. Search for the 3rd edition entitled "Endbands from East to West: How to Work Them" by Jane Greenfield and Jenny Hille. As the description states - 'This third edition of the now-classic manual originally titled "Headbands: How to Work Them" has been revised and updated... ISBN-10: 1584563664 ISBN-13: 978-1584563662 Publisher: Oak Knoll Press; Revised (3rd) Edition (May 1, 2017) I still need to get a copy of this myself!

Didn't know the 2nd edition had become a collectors edition:) I ordered the 3rd edition from Oak Knoll earlier in the year but unfortunately it went missing in the mail. Oak Knoll have been great and gave me a refund. But not sure they are keen to send to Australia for awhile and I don't blame them. DAS

I ordered the third edition directly to Oak Knoll. Book price was 18$ and shipping cost to Europe was another 18$ but I'm positive it worth it.

I'm trying to figure out what size silk thread to buy. Even buttonhole thread comes in varying thicknesses. What do you use? Thanks.
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 3 жыл бұрын
I use the thicker of the 2 types of silk thread that Gütermann makes. But you can use different thickness for different effects. Some people use the thinner thread to get an extremely refined look and some people use thicker linen thread to get a chunky look (and it's faster). Good luck! DAS

Is there any functional advantage in having the bead on the spine or is it just a matter of aesthetics?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
If there is no primary headband I don't think there is. I'm not an expert on medieval books, but there may be a reason when it comes to sewing a primary headband. For me it is just about the look. All the best, Darryn

Some linen or hemp cord, round or flat leather thong, plastic cord. Really anything you want to that has flexibility. It doesn't;t have to be round, can be flat or square.

The "Sewing on a demonstration text" was much easier to follow because of the thickness of the thread.

Yes. I hope the holes weren't too visible but I did cut off the first headband I did on the book because the video was so hard to see. Took me awhile to give up and do the demo book. I had planned to show doing a single colour bead at front on the other end of the book, but the video was already too long. Anyway, it's just the 2 colour bead on front where the 2 colours are the same:) All the best, Darryn
