Karol Ryszawy they created the shape, lighting/shading and such to make it look how they desired. Its not 3D and not sculpted its safe to say it’s artwork with the help of free to use photo(s) to help with the realism and idea without referencing. The design and such is purely their own and it probably wouldnt have looked the same if they didnt draw/paint throughout the process. They have skill and it is for sure art but its not JUST craftsmanship if it even is because not just anyone can paint that and such to bring it to life.

Whoah thank you guys for watching! Just noticed the sudden influx of viewers and subscribers. Thank you for the support, I guess I will have to post videos more frequently now XD Also heres some answer to some of the comments: 1. This is Photoshop CC and I used a Wacom Cintiq 24 Pro, though a tablet would work just as great, I use Photoshop's default round brush and airbrush (soft brush) for the whole painting. 2. Soundtrack is from Destiny 1's OST, one of the best! I'm also lucky enough to be a part of the team working on Destiny 2. 3. Photobashing is absolutely not recommended for beginners, its easy to be overwhelmed by it or become reliant on photos to produce artwork. Photobashing is a technique concept artists commonly use to speed up the creation process, it allows us to produce more artworks within a certain amount of time compared to handdrawing all of it, it still takes a lot from one's visual libary and painting fundamentals. Its a fun technique to explore but if youre just starting in digital art I would not recommend focusing on it, foundation matters! 4. I've been drawing digitally for about 15 years now and have been working in the gaming/film industry for a decade. 5. This took 3.5 hours in real time, excluding the toilet break or snack times :D 6. I am also known as the man with too many photoshop layers. Its a habit mainly due to work because I constantly have to go back and change stuffs so having more layers on gives me that flexibility. 7. The initial idea is that this is a prototype/in-development suit for the Combat Astronaut concept I did a while back (you can view it on my artstation, link in the description), so I want it to look rough and prototype-ish

FYI a good way to practice this technique is to do live drawing in a structured environment like a gesture drawing class. You can usually find them even outside of college by looking up art studios in your area. Since the canvas/tablet doesn't change size and you're focusing on a subject that keeps the same pose for a set time period, you teach your brain to render that way. It translates back to your digital work immediately.

It’s deff easier to find tutorials online now but for the most part it’s teaching yourself over years. Basically come up with an original idea that you want to do. Volcanic matte painting, robot like this video whatever. Then just start experimenting and when you need specific knowledge look up how to do something. For example back when I first began if I wanted to do a super hero image like a person on fire. I’d go as far as I could then look up several tutorials on adding fire then use those multiple sources to find my own way of doing stuff. Never just follow a tutorial because you will only learn a fraction of what you will doing your own thing and actually learning what’s going on

He's Mostly using thewarp tool but you need at least a basic understanding of the fundamentals like form perspective anatomy etc for better results, also you could but don't use just some random Picture, I'd be useful if you have an idea of what you want to do first, in this case a sci fi android, he's using 1 image but it's a very useful mechanical design with enough big medium and small shapes to repeat and play around. he probably didn't picked it randomly he kind of knew it'd be useful for his idea.

Hi Rob! A lot of great and true replies here so I'm just gonna add more to the bunch, as stated in a pinned comment, I would absolutely not recommend photobashing to beginners or amateurs, its good as an exercise but its a little dangerous because if someone is not experienced enough he/she would be easily get caught up in how "easy" it seems to do an artwork, after sometime theres a chance that one might be reliant on this technique for quick results and feels hard to draw from a blank canvas anymore. We mainly use this techniques while making art for games and movies because we are usually working within a tighter deadline compared to illustrators, sometimes we have to produce many character/environment sketches in a day but at the same time we must explore many other directions/ideas, hence this drawing technique allows us to quickly utilize some of the elements of a photo that matches our idea and put it on the screen, making us more efficient as a concept artist. But most people, especially people who are just starting digital art, dont realize that photobashing actually takes a lot of muscle memory and a big visual library, even though I am working with one photo, but in my head there are actually other countless photos/paintings/ideas that I have seen throughout my life and career, while im drawing these ideas are slowly being transferred to my hand and to the canvas, sometimes sub-consciously and sometimes intentionally, for example one of my favorite things are skulls, so when I have no solid idea yet i would unconsciously start drafting shapes that resembles a skull, not an exact skull but its just because I have drawn and seen skulls so many times it became a habit, which I why I also encourage my students to see more artworks/photos/beautiful or interesting stuffs to increase their visual library. So while it seem random, quick or easy, its actually not, it took a lot of years of foundation and experience too, I have been drawing digitally for morethan 15 years and I still feel like I'm lacking so much more, but we must keep learning as artists! So my advise for beginners/amateurs, is to work on foundations, they are absolutely important for all of us artists out there, I know its tough to draw portraits or life drawings everyday and feel that its not as fancy or cool compared to these photobashing sci fi stuffs, but trust me, if you have 10,000 life drawing experiences, it will be reflected on your concept art, and professionals out there can definitely see that. Just remember that photobashing is just a tool, what matters its still the person behind it, never rely on the tool :D
@robthelimegrenade10984 жыл бұрын
@@JohnsonTing I appreciate the reply and the feedback, I do understand that continual growth through studying of life is going to create better pieces as you take on the artistic journey. I lean more to illustrations than concept art, and in no way do I think that this is "magic" or "easy" to do. I like the idea of using "some" photobashing in my illustrations, just as something to learn with as I've never tried it before. I usually get reference and just draw it all on paper before Uploading it and doing digital things to it as the only way I can learn is I have to draw it out. It just looks really cool, but yeah, it's a tool like you said. Thanks again!

"I use Photoshop's default round brush and airbrush (soft brush) for the whole painting." - wh- WHAT?! No texture brushes at all!! Or changing brush settings? It's incredible what you can do with just the pipette/color picker, and hotkeys for changing size and color! This would have taken me much longer than 3.5 hours. Amazing talent and skill!!!
