I don't have big hands and went to a mid size grip and I love them. They don't move around in my hands and seem so much easier to hold. I guess it is a individual issue. I am loving the single plane swing. I stepped out this morning, took a 5 iron, no warm ups, and hit a solid straight hit. Never done that in my 40yrs of golf.

Being an engineer by training I had always wondered why there was so much ambiguity in golf. It’s an optimization problem quite simply put and there is only one optimal way for any given outcome! Never understood why setup and impact would need to be so different and all the adjustments had to happen WHILE swinging - seemed entirely arbitrary to me. You good Sir don’t sell opinion, you sell results of an optimization process Mr. Norman has completed for us to copy! Thank you very much for your work!

Thanks for this excellent explanation of Moe's grip. In addition to your videos, I actually have the original Natural Golf book (in which you are prominently featured as the primary model of Moe's swing) and I was sure that I had correctly placed my hands on the club. Here is what I have found in my experimentation: I use the 10-finger grip for pitching and chiping. But, I switch to the overlaping grip for driver and fairway woods. I find that the 10-finger grip allows me to keep the club face square to the target line longer and it increases my accuracy. But, as you say, for longer shafts in the driver and fairway woods, the 10-finger grip restricts the leverage angle in the backswing and get shorter shots due to reduced swing speed. I do use the JumboMax XL grips with no-taper and it find that it gives me greater control over face angle. Because of this, I hit very straight shots. But, I'm still a work in progress and I frequently watch the Moe Norman videos and the Natural Golf book to remind myself of the swing goals I am trying to achieve. Your KZbin videos are an inspiration. Thanks a million.

Thanks for this informative instruction on grip. I first learned Natural Golf when I needed to find a swing for my Father, who after hip surgery, could no longer play the game he loved. We took the Natural Golf lessons together in Tampa and he loved how he could once again hit it square without hip action; which he could no longer replicate after surgery. It also took me out of the woods and into the fairway but my distance suffered greatly. I'm 6'4" tall and 250 lbs and I used to hit it a mile, but not very straight. Natural Golf cured my slice but took yards away from my drives. The first tenet of Natural Golf was the palm grip and ten finger; which was hard to get used to. My hands are very large; I wear XXX gloves so the Natural Golf grip feels better in my hands. I can now see where my mistakes were and take it to the range. Thanks again.

Great video, I get it.. I just want to say that I grew up playing tennis so when I found out Moe had bigger grips and talked about having the grip in your palms I was elated. I understood what he was getting at immediately, you get a much better feel. So what did I do, I experimented and quickly found out too big is a loss of control and too thin is loss of feel so you really have to make sure it’s better to have a bit of both. Back to tennis grips, the size differences come in 1/8 of an inch differences so it’s important to figure out your personal size. Mid size grips with 2 tapes work for me.. 🎯

The best video on the grip I've ever watched! I would add 3 comments based on what you said that I think may not be entirely correct. You stated that you aren't a fan of the 10 finger grip because it shortens the lever-> implication power loss. I would argue, getting your dominant hand fully on the club, yes with a tiny bit shorter lever, provides FAR more potential power gain than loss from 1/2" shorter of a lever. The 2nd issue would be the implication that a full Radial (thumbs up) Wrist Hinge (on the back swing) is necessary for the most leverage / power. When you look at some of the longest hitters on tour (Bryson's new swing, Wolff, Rahm), none have a full thumbs up Radial Hinge (on the backswing) but do get more loaded wrist compression Radial Hinge during the change of direction (which stores more power than an uncompressed / unloaded Radial hinge) - but they all have massive loaded Wrist Extension 'hinging' during the same transition - thus you can argue that the focus on a full Radial Hinge as a backswing necessity isn't completely accurate as wrist Extension and additional 'down cock' radial wrist loading are more important. The 3rd 'physics' issue would be that a bigger grip provides more surface area for the Right Hand to apply force against and 2ndly, the larger circumference of a bigger grip would allow more mechanical advantage twisting force to be applied to the grip by the golfer - this alone is a reason for everyone to use as big a grip a possible - at minimum +4 type grips. I recently found your channel and have really enjoyed your material.

The grip with the left hand looks very Hoganesque. In his "Five Lessons" you can see an excellent illustration of the proper hand grip and it mirrors Mo Norman's hand grip. The shaft should be obliquely placed just below the first joints of the fingers of the left hand to ensure squaring the club head at the top of the swing. A grip in the meaty part of the hand would induce a duck hook. Norman and Hogan the best ball strikers ever!

The standard place to measure the top hand portion of a grip is 2 inches down from the end. If you measure that Natural Golf grip there, I'm pretty sure it will be 0.900 inches, which is the same as a standard size grip. I used to have the NG grips, but finally threw out my last one. They are of course that same size all the way down to the bottom, which is quite different from a standard grip.

The genius of the Vardon grip vs. the baseball grip used in the 1800s is that it allows the hands to turn over symmetrically like a hinge pin on a gate - . - when a golf club is allowed to freely hang under the shoulders and find equilibrium “pendulum” balance with gravity. If the hands are separated on the grip as in the baseball grip the hands will swing out in a circle away from the body adversely affecting club path. That overlapping-locked grip style was actually first developed my Scottish amateur Johnny Laidlay in the 1890s then adopted and popularized by Vardon. The difference in the single plane swing developed by Moe is that it does not start from a baseline of the club handing freely in balance with hands swung in close to body by the canted dual lever action the Vardon grip creates. Moe’s swing dynamics were more like the Olympic hammer throw and the hammer throw of the Scottish games in the 1600s in which body mass, of which he had ample supply, is used to counter the force of the swinging club and maintain balance. The same strategy much also be employed in the conventional swing for balance when the clubs get too long to swing freely under the shoulders at address like a pendulum (e.g.; anything longer than a 5 iron). One of the reasons golfers using the conventional swing style struggle so much with longer irons is not realizing the need to swing them differently. Many seem to hit Driver better than irons because with Driver they keep the club up in the air and swing it while setting up, reflexively finding ideal “dynamic” balance the way Moe did with all clubs with his swing style. The fact that the single plane swing and grip forces the golfer to finding the ideal point of balance by swinging the club is I thing one of the reasons it is so effective and much easier for beginning golfers to learn compared to the dual plane swing developed by Byron Nelson in the mid-1930s when switching to metal shafts. The inherent advantage of the dual plane swing with metal shafts vs. the old single plane with Hickory clubs is the loading of kinetic energy in the shaft by bending it at the start of the downswing then maintaining the bend by keeping the hands accelerating faster than shoulders in the downswing. But it is also possible to do that with a single plane with with metal clubs which Moe proved. But golfers are like Lemmings willing to follow whatever new style appears to create an advantage. In Nelson’s case it was actually just bending and loading the shaft by dropping the hands down at the start of the backswing so everyone copied that-except Moe because Moe knew his way accomplished the other key goal better-releasing the ball straight to the target with ‘no-brainer’ bio-mechanical simplicity.

Great video ever on the net showing golfers the proper grip, but I did notice you and many other golfers want to take their grip of their hands too far up the shaft, why? Because they believe the longer the club the longer they will hit the ball, The top of the grip is the thickest part of the club! Moe and many other pro golfers leave a gap of around two inches or more at at the top of their grip! Why, because their club fits better and feels better when the finger tips are just touching the palms of their hands! I have small fat sausage fingers and it took me almost 20 odd years to admit to myself that I will need to fit lady's grips onto my clubs, why did I not do it earlier you may ask, well every time I talked about doing this too my clubs my golf mates would laugh and make fun of me! The other thing is, most golfers play with custom made clubs which are standard, I am only 5 feet four so what good is standard clubs to me, some golfers are well over six feet, so what good is standard clubs too them? The answer is - get fitted - but not every golfer can afford to do that, so the next best option and the only option is to take their grip further down the shaft! I have been playing golf for well over 45 years, so sad it took me this long to figure this out! I hope this helps those who are reading this, if they are joiners then they will twig right away! Then we have club head alignment at address, but that's another story! Good luck golfers!

Good information. Yes, Get fitted. Nothing wrong with moving the hands down the club to fit. might lighten the overall swing weight so consider adding a bit of lead tape (weight) to the club head.

@ToddGravesGolf4 жыл бұрын
I have found that the Interlocking grip is the least effective hand position for the Single Plane Swing. You can give it a try but often the trail hand of the interlocking grip creates too much (on Top) rotation of the hand. Therefore I find that overlapping is much better.

To be honest, I am not a huge fan of single length clubs for a number of reasons. The goal of Single length would be to create and advantage. While I understand that single length might seem like an advantage - one length / one setup - I believe it creates some disadvantages in the shorter irons. Also, you still have four other lengths of clubs in your bag so you can never get away from the length of the club (lever) generating speed. Therefore, I just dont think they are a huge advantage.

Hi Todd, I agree with just about everything you said. But you probably watched the 1994 Moe Norman golf swing demo - Interview (it comes up when searching youtube for it). When closely watching it, Moe had limited motion of the backswing with the 10 finger.... Moe pre natural golf he was able to jack that golf club way back. I know age might play a factor of course, but even still... Also, I would like for you to dive into and or do a video, Why Moe earlier on had an ankle roll going on in his trail foot, versus the flat foot approach that you teach now, as clearly demonstrated in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYiTeH14edafbtk

Hey Todd, I'm trying to adopt this swing but my ball flight is still heading to the right (I'm left handed). I am making solid contact though. Would this indicate I'm still twisting or rotating instead of shifting forward. Thank you for all the videos.

Might indicate a strong lead hand position where the club is closed.

Yes. That is what Moe said but not what he did. I have dozens of pictures and videos to validate Moe's actual hand position.

Great video. A little off topic but how did MOE square his club up at address when it was so far behind the ball? If you square your club directly behind the ball and then move it back to where MOE did then due to the arc the clubface would now be open a little. So how did he consistently get it correct when he just quickly put his club way back behind the ball?
@ToddGravesGolf5 жыл бұрын
Remember, Moe tilted at address, he didn't turn at address so the club is square because he only tilted.

Todd I have a question. I could swear in an older video series that you stated that the club shaft will hit your forearm and that you had bruises there from hitting so many wedge shots? Could be confusing a video and a remark you made on an old board? Is this something from teh Natural Golf days that you moved away from?
@ToddGravesGolf5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the club would "incorrectly" hit my arm. I had to learn how to stop it from doing so. I don't want the club hitting the arm.

Mr. Graves, I’m really confused. After watching the Moe Norman and Bryson DeChambeau Secret video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZaQnHqkltCFmJI, I tried using the described set up with full ulnar deviation. I maintained that position throughout my swing. This resulted in a slower swing speed (because of no lead wrist cock/hinge during my back swing), but much, much, more consistent ball striking. Giving up speed/distance for straight/consistent ball striking was OK with me. But watching this video, although you start and end with full ulnar deviation, you clearly don’t have it at the top of your swing as you hinge/cock that lead wrist. I understand this is needed for speed/distance but it requires perfect timing (just like the traditional swing) in returning to full ulnar deviation at the bottom of the swing. I’m sure I’m wrong but it seems like the only difference is that you start with full ulnar deviation, give it up at the top of the swing, and then return to it, while the traditional swing starts with partial lead wrist hinge/cock, increases it at the top of swing, and then must get to full ulnar deviation for ball contact. Please clarify for me. Thanks.
