I was bored today so some single speed tinkering was the obvious choice. Stick around toward the end for a nice little gravel rip. Single speeds rule. Especially ones made from steel. I hope y'all are hanging in out there! Get a single speed, they make life more fun.

I agree, single speed riding has its own fascination. I enjoy it. Haven’t tried fixed riding yet, which appears to be more fun, but on the other hand also to be more exhausting.

I built a single speed this fall out of an old road bike. It's got a BMX freewheel and flat bars, and its just fun! It's like hopping on your bike like a kid and just going to ride. It greatly simplifies the experience. You have 3 speed: Pedaling, standing up and pedaling, and walking. Also, I love mine because its almost dead silent. I know White makes good stuff, but I'm not sure i like the louder freewheel.

It's definitely a flash back for me. Thick tires on a single speed is how it all began. It's funny when I hear the word "gravel bike" like it's a new thing. What kid didn't ride the wheels off his bike in gravel? Some unlucky one's I suppose :)

I had a 26" mountain bike that I converted into a single speed with a Surly Sigulator. Later, I purchased a Raleigh 29er XXIX and converted that into a S.S. Cyclocross bike. I love the simplicity of it.

I have a single speed, and I use it the most of my 3 bikes. I use it for last mile transport (I take the bus), I use it on the greenway trails I ride, I use it for store trips. I actually just got a new freewheel...it's silent. At first I thought "nah", but I like it. I hear the road, any noises the bike is making, other bikes sneaking up on me. It's awesome.

When you come up behind a person on the trail you can never be quite sure what response you'll get. The white haired guy exhibited what I call the "Hong Kong Phooey" response (remember Hong Kong Phooey on Saturday mornings). That's when they whirl around and assume some kind of martial art stance and prepare to engage in mortal combat,lol.

Right on Doug! Thanks for stopping by. White freewheels are solid and sound amazing. Pretty sure I’d only buy them for any freewheel here on out. As for the bars... I don’t have experience with bullhorns, but have been eye balling them lately! Drops are cool, but not immediately what I’m used to having a mtb background. I’ll trade you my wabi drops for your bullhorns, ha.

2 very important questions (for me): - where did you get those single speed disc brake wheels at? - where did you get that Bianchi frame with wide tire clearance and disc brake support? I've been wanting a single speed/no suspension MTB for a veeeeeery long time now. But they're expensive af.
@thegravelist
@thegravelist 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan - thanks for the questions! Not sure on the wheels as they came with the bike. They are 26” “WTB speed disc single speed”, I just found a few sets on eBay if you wanna snag them there. The Bianchi frame was a random Craigslist snag here in the bay from a person who used to work there. Which is a wild story. But the model is S.I.S.S. I’m sure you can find an old frame somewhere online! The fork it came with had suspension, but I picked up a rigid fork from a local recyclery and slapped it on there. It’s been an awesome bike to tinker with and learn on! Hope this helps and I hope you’re able to find one for yourself 🤘🏼

You don't really explain why you love single speed though in this though, even though I can hear your passion for it. :) Can you give your view on why? I got back into riding as an adult the last year and had a aluminum single speed but body was aching if I went hard, then bought a cheap geared steel CX bike on CL and love it, and now there's a single speed steel CX bike on craigslist for a good price so I'm doing research again. Hearing your excitement does make think I should jump on that deal even though I love my geared but something's calling me back to single. I really think aluminum was the issue the first time. If you're open to just throw down a few reasons why you love SS. Thanks for the vid.
@thegravelist
@thegravelist 3 жыл бұрын
For sure -- thanks for your comment! Steel is what started this cycling journey for me. I started out on a old Bianchi steel single speed MTB, which rips til this day. When I purchased my first 'serious' bike, I went with an All City steel cross bike and it's true what people say about steel. It's got a real cool ride quality. Plus there's a bit of charm in terms of nostalgia with a steel bike. It's tough to explain, but it's like a tried and true material that, when done right, is springy, stiff and responsive in all the right ways. I'd say go for the purchase on that single speed you found. Nothing beats the care-free nature a single speed offers up. No fiddling with gears, just keep your chain clean and you'll be riding a single speed for a long time! There's also a zen like quality, if you wanna go that deep into it. Just one gear and one rider. Any terrain or hill you come up against is all on you. But to sum it all up, single speeds are just simple. Just get out there and ride!

@@thegravelist Awesome! I greatly appreciate your deeper explanation. I do understand the steel thing for sure just based on my geared steel vs Aluminum ss riding experience. Alright, much PROSPERITY to you and thanks again for being gracious enough to answer and share your view on it. Steel single speed I'm on my way buddy! 😎

You can risk stripping out your threads doing that. There is substantially more torque applied through pedaling than a wrench. Not everyone “hand tightens” the same I’ve witnessed a lot of “hand tightened” threads not fully engaged and I wonder what makes some people so ignorant to such things.
