7:52 *YOU LARPERS* a medieval arming sword (that is the 'knightly' one handed sword) weighs from 1kg to 1.5kg, the average being 1.1kg - 1.2kg (compare that to an average british victorian infantry sabre, which sits around 850g, but are balanced further up the blade, around 15cm from the hilt, but most high-late medieval arming swords tend to balance at around 8cm-12cm from the hilt, which makes the swords feel a lot lighter, though arming swords arent as optimised for single-sword parrying, so sword and buckler would probably be the most common civillian combination. english archers also used that combination. in the migration period (that is the dark ages, early medieval/late viking age) arming swords would be heftier, at around 1.3kg to 1.5kg, because they were intended to be only used with shields most of the time. a longsword on the other hand (that is, the late medival 2 handed 'knightly' cruciform sword) would weigh around 1.5kg to 1.8kg, depending of the size and shape. longswords are lot better in parrying compared to arming swords, because theyre used in two hands, which creates leverage, which makes redirection easy, but also means that strikes are far more precise and powerful at the same time. they also tend to balance around 10cm-15cm from the crossguard. a ZWEIHANDER (the man-sized two handed renaissance sword) would weigh 2.8kg - 3.5kg, and at an average of around 3kg. 4.5kg would be a giant full sized battle lance, which is around 12ft long. for comparison, all you fricking weeaboos out there, a katana weighs around 1.3kg-1.4kg, balances at around 10cm-15cm, but is only the same length as a medieval arming sword. (just the blade: around 60cm after the 16th century and 70cm before the 16th century, an arming sword is around 70cm-80cm) while the longsword balances at around 10cm-15cm from the crossguard, and weighs 1.5kg-1.8kg *AT 85CM TO 110CM OF BLADE LENGTH ALONE* (the hilts tend to be at around 20cm-30cm, and longer longswords tend to have longer hilts) lets choose a normal, 15th-16th century longsword: blade length at 100cm, hilt length at 28cm, with the shape and style i imagine itd weigh around or a little over: 1.6kg and with the shape i chose lets balance it at: 12cm lets go for something inbetween the two period katanas: 65cm of blade. with the average katana having a 28cm hilt, lets add that in too. with this length, id imagine itd be around or a little over 1.3kg, lets balance it at 14cm, as this sword is a bit longer than the modern 60cm bladed katana. *LONGSWORD* Overall Length: 128cm Blade length: 100cm Weight: 1.6kg Point of Balance: 12cm from the cross *KATANA* Overall Length: 93cm Blade Length: 65cm Weight: 1.3kg Point of Balance: 14cm there you go. long story short, longswords tend to be as nimble as katanas if not more. katanas are more optimised for cutting so a bit of a heftier and shorter blade aids in that, which doesnt mean that a longsword cant cut as well or better. because european swords have a LOT more variation after all.

What's the company that make those specific 2 swords that u guys are using?

Foot steps are a very important part of attacking and defending. Having a good understanding of your reach and your opponent reach , foot step included is one of the most important key in fencing with any weapon.

The dude in armor is totally over extending on some of those blocks. He shouldn’t swinging/pushing his sword towards your attack as that leaves him totally vulnerable to feints. Ex: 0:18

A medieval sword does not weigh 4 1/2 kilo thats 9.92 LB, a sword may be weighing around 3 1/2 kilo which is much more manageable, but in all regards depends on weapon length and much more.

You may well be right. Will have to dig it out at some point and weigh the sword again. Cheers for the feedback.

I know, 7month later but... A heavy, two handed (zweihander, not longsword) is at most 2.2kg. A Long sword is around 1.1 and 1.8kg. Sword are not that heavy, but need way more talent than what we mostly see in larp to effectualy deals debilitating blow. Not just the "Hit, your dead" kind of motion.

@@YouLARP a typical longsword is generally 3 pounds. 4 pounds at most. 2-3 pounds for a katana and arming sword.

Hey there, I'm making a back up character who will reside in Dawn. Have you got any advice in getting integrated?
@YouLARP7 жыл бұрын
Jakers457 depending on if you go noble or yeoman there are different ways to get involved. Obviously as a yeoman you can approach different houses for tests. If you're generating as a noble it might help to make connections out of character and find out if player houses are recruiting. From experience most of them will fall over themselves to help. Depending on your play style different groups will have appeal be that focused organisation to be powerful and equip with the best gear, magically focused towards ritual or roleplay heavy with lots of background. National Facebook group can be a good place to start but not all groups are on there. Pretty much all archetypes have a niche in dawn so it should be easy to find something that works for you

Hey Jakers. If you want to integrate fast I would say be helpful. Do a bit of leg work for an "important" character. Being a useful person to have around makes people want to have you around. My character Clarence is not a useful person to have around in most situations... You could enter with a little quest that will force you to speak to lots of different houses if you are a question knight or the like. The simplest is to be a Yeoman looking to join a house, then you get to speak to people about yourself and find out about them as well. Hope this helped a bit. Any questions just ask.

I was thinking of going the Knight Errant route. It seemed like a good middle ground between yeoman and noble. My current character is a Thane in Wintermark so I wanted a less responsible role but not one that is completely subservient if that makes sense? Would I be correct in thinking an Knight Errant would cater to that? Thanks for the replies by the way :)

I don’t know the metric system well so I’m kinda hoping you might be better at converting the numbers but the average single handed sword weighs around 3.5 - 4.5 lbs a longsword weighs anywhere from 4.5 - 6 lbs (6 is typically on the heavier side though unless of course it’s a greatsword which is the average weight for that) all in all swords are so much lighter than people think

This is pretty entertaining and all but I would like to say a couple of things form wise. If your right handed your stance should be right leg facing the front and your left leg back facing sideways, so you should be facing sideways except your right foot. As well that your grip is wrong. Also your an easy win because your walking, what you want to do is stay in your stance and shuffle forward or backwards because you’ll be off balance and easy to hit. Your swinging your feet back, DONT. That’s a big mistake. If your doing that all someone needs to do is push forward and your gone, or if there fast enough then al they need to do is pull up. Instead put your sword DOWN. Not so it’s jabbed into the ground but close to block it.

Thank you for the sound advice Brayden. Hopefully will get to practice again sometime soon and will try what you explained so well.
