For some perspective, growing up in the 80's I was a scruffy youngster on a second hand 10 speed from Sears. My buddies and I often raced bikes through the woods, on foot trails and on dirtbike trails with woops ruts and jumps. Occasionally we hit BIG jumps, like full send dirtbike jumps. A few had bmx bikes, but I never got left behind. Presently, I have both a hardtail mtb and a gravel bike. I use them both on the local singletrack trails. Yes, my mtb is more comfortable and a bit faster in the bumpy stuff. BUT, the gravel bike is actually more fun and a bit faster in the climbs. Hats off to you both for going outside of your comfort zone. Keep practicing and you'll find it's much easier. Also, and probably contrary to what your local bike shop is telling you, clipless pedals are a deathwish with this type of riding - you need to be able to put your foot down and catch yourself in a split second when you slip or loose balance. Cycling is a community made up of all types of abilities and experience levels, and you guys are awesome for going for it like this. Ride ON!!

I have not ridden a gravel bike but with that kind of trail, would an MTB be better for off-road cycling? By the way, I wish Jason a very happy birthday!

Jason said thank you for the kind birthday wishes! In terms of bike choice- yes an MTB would be well suited for these trails however the event is mostly gravel, some paved, and about 3 miles of single track. The total course mileage is 66 miles. Some people ride the entire course with MTBs. That’s what’s fun about these events- choosing the right equipment!

The logs will be moved at the first creek crossing ,its there to keep ATV out ,my self an Andy will be in there blowing out leaves also before the ride,

Thanks! Those creek crossings might be manageable now without those logs, but I’ll probably still chicken out 😅
