That's correct, in most cases. Serve for 20 years in order to receive retirement from the military.

Yes…if you medically retire, which can be anytime before 20 years, you get lifetime payments from the VA…it’s called service connected compensation…it’s tax free and that benefit can pass 50k tax free annually and even more for those with special circumstances. Those who retire after 20 years get a pension from the military as well as the VA (veterans affairs). So no, you don’t have to serve 20 years to be compensated for a lifetime after service.
