Tech did not recover from this loss until 1997. Lewis was a dud coach and was fired mid way in the 94 season. O’Leary brought Tech back to glory. Charlie Ward was special. Great comeback for the Noles.

As a head coach Bill Lewis was a dud..He had that one great season at East Carolina when they 11-1 and that was it..

This was the birth of the fast break and spread offense. It totally transformed Ward and the team that would take them into the championship the following year.

Georgia Tech was no longer on Auburn's schedule for 1992 and 1993 due to the SEC expansion with the addition of Arkansas, and South Carolina. After the series was dropped after the 1987 season

First of all Charlie Ward could have played in the NFL, and imho done well. Just imagine had the Chiefs drafted him in 94 , he'd have had a mentor in Joe Montana for at least one year. KC was a playoff team with an outstanding defense in both 94-95, going a combined 26-6 I recall. Steve Bono for a journeyman qb had a good 95. However I think Ward brought more weapons to the battle. I've heard it said that if he wasn't to be drafted by the NFL in the first round he'd give the NBA a shot, so the gm's backed off. When IN REALITY and as we all know, is the racist and shortsighted NFL simply were not going to give him a real opportunity to helm a club...real talk. Charlie however did quite well fiscally in going to the nba...made about 35m for 11 seasons of play. It's a shame that we didn't get the chance to see him play football professionally, but "dad gummit" he sure balled out at FSU. Sidebar: had the nfl the foresight to utilize the black qb, instead of being a bunch of racist wasp "peckerwoods", just think of the fiscal gains alone...

Ward's FSU career basically started in the second half against Tech. We played to his strengths & were rewarded with the natty the very next year.

Believe it was the same day/night as Game 1 of the 1992 World Series played at Fulton County Stadium. Bet it was fun to have tickets for this game and the World Series.

I was at both games. I left the football game with Tech leading and did not get to see the heartbreaking ending. Deion who played for the Braves showed up at the football game before it started and parked his car right at the stadium. He hung out with the FSU fans and then left for Atlanta Stadium. Would have been a great day but for the Tech loss.

when it was 24-14, and fsu scores to make it 24-20, why did they go for 2? if they kick the x-pt it's a 3 pt game, but instead they went for 2, missed it and left themselves needing a TD to win. can someone explain that to me? also, w/ the onside kick and the go-ahead TD, the x-pt only put them up 3, and, if fsu had kicked the x-pt after the previous TD, they'd been up by 4 (28-24). who am i to question the coaching of a legend,.. but, that just seemed like a poor coaching decision. and, fsu better be glad there was no reviewing plays in '92 cause i have a feeling that last TD was a fumble. and, i'm thinking that one ref at 1:23:35 is an fsu fan the way he signaled FSU ball... seemed a lil excited.. .lol

No, it was a TD and not a fumble. The back judge was looking right at the football to see if it broke the plane - which it only has to do for a split second and it did. You couldn't see jack squat from the TV angle located behind the play. They went for two so that they could win the game on a FG if they make it 24-22 which they couldn't do if it was 24-21. They also trusted their special teams to get the ball back on an onside kick if they didn't make the 2-pt conversion - which they did.

Because when ties existed. A lot of Timex teams would do that to get within 2 so they win not tie with a FG. And if they didn't get it. They would need a td. But either way no tie. Because a tie was almost the same as a loss. Once you had a loss. If you were undefeated it was different. FSU was still in the hunt. But a tie would've ended natty hopes. Like I said if you already had a loss a tie was like another loss. Only bad teams played for ties back then. Bobby Bowden never played for the tie.

Incidental face mask 5 yard penalty on GT?? #44’s helmet was on backwards when he got up because it was the only way the secondary guy could’ve brought him down.

This game lost for GT deflated the team 92, where they could not win but one game after this.
