It's about WWI, an American soldier hit by a artillery round and loses his face ( eyes, ears, nose, teeth and tongue) along with his limbs, and is now a prisoner in his own body. The movie clips are from a movie called "Johnny got his Gun" that was also based on the book of the same name. the book came out in 1938 while the movie came out in 1971. Metallica ended up purchasing the film rights to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalties. The music video for this song was also Metallica's very first music video. The lead singer and drummer's names are James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich who are the primary songwirters for the band.
