SINKEX: Turkey's Anti-ship Missile Atmaca Sinks a Ship in Final Test

Turkish Navy's fourth Ada-class corvette, TCG KINALIADA, carried out the final test-firing of the Roketsan-made Atmaca anti-ship missile on June 19th in the Black Sea.

In this sinking exercise (SINKEX), the missile sunk the decommissioned research vessel ISIN (a former US Navy Diver-class rescue and salvage ship ). Atmaca hit the ship from the starboard side after a sea-skimming flight with an altitude between 1 and 1.5 meters. This test-firing was the final qualification test. The program can now move to mass production.
Following the event, Turkey’s President officially announced the commissioning of the missile into Turkish Navy service.
Another critical issue of the event is the role of Turkey’s first armed USV known as ULAQ. ULAQ was positioned approximately 5 km from the target ship. As you can see in this footage captured by the USV, it monitored the launch and recorded the impact on the target and the explosion from a close distance.

Those who has no idea about these missiles. Harpoon has 140km range, and Atmaca has 250 km range officially but its engine able to work at least an hour, which means in a real war, it can be configured to hit a target 1000km away, if you calculate its 0.95 mach speed

Great step... But 'new' normal harpoon like that it isn't stealthy like NSM, LRASM. Or super sonic like Zircon, P-800... Its good beacuse in order to develop high network, stealthy anti ship missle OR super sonic ones. You need to work step by step. But I don't think countries except for few will ever try to buy this. I mean, harpoon-like sub sonic non-stealthy missles market is already 'full' with more capapble, proven missles such as modified harpoons and missles from other countries such as Russia, China, France and Korea. So I think this missle will just work as a stepping stone for Turkish military industry.

No offense, but that is a narrow perpective.. Atmaca deliberately designed to use Harpoon canisters and mount points for a reason. Turkey has 8 frigates 4 corvettes and 19 missile boats capable of carrying 8x Harpoons each. Plus Turkey has 8 modified OHP frigates called Gabya, these normally carry 16 Harpoons, and are capable of carrying *40* Harpoons if really necessary.. That makes 376 Harpoon missiles for standard loadout of every ship, and 568 missiles if you go crazy with Gabyas but lets ignore it for now. The main issue is, Turkey's total procurement of ship-launched Harpoon missiles (RGM-84) until year 2010 is 312. There may be more missiles bought later, but some missiles are also expended in training so Turkey never had full complement of Harpoons to arm every ship it has to their full potential, let alone having additional reserves for a full scale war. For some odd reason, US, the great friend and ally of Turkey, doesn't sell more Harpoons to Turkey. Partly because of the actual shortage in inventory, and in the hopes of expanding shelf life of these "valuable" missiles, virtually all Turkish missile boats routinely carry 2 Harpoons (Kılıç class sometimes carry 4)... 2 out of 8 all of these ships capable of carrying.. In Denizkurdu-2021 exercise, 4 of the participating frigates had 4 harpoons installed, and one had 6.. Out of 8 missiles they are capable of carrying. Same is true for Exocet stocks, they are barely enough for wartime, so 6 of our Exocet-armed corvettes never fired a single missile in exercises for years. Atmaca is response to Western world trying to put a leash on TAF by limiting supplies and ammunition. Replace Harpoons on 1-1 basis, retrofit Exocet launchers on B-class corvettes. Is an individual Atmaca missile compared to Harpoon/Exocet make a revolutionary improvement in capability? No, its an incremental upgrade at best. But carrying 8 missiles (instead of 2) on 19 missile boats and eventually bringing 152 better anti ship missiles (instead of 38) to Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean sea, all the while having virtually unlimited stock to reloads WILL make an incredible difference in capability. Could Turkey have made a better missile with VLO characteristics? Sure. We have SOM missile family (with stealth shaping) in service with Air force, while SOM-A is INS and TERCOM only, SOM-B also has IIR seeker for moving targets (and a 230kg warhead) so its readily usable againist ships.. Also there is SOM-C dedicated anti-ship variant in the works with active radar (same seeker as, suprise, Atmaca)... These are, so far, air launched only.. Just put a booster at the back and it can be converted for surface launch. But that would necessitate modifications to more than 3 dozen ships, and it would be impossible to integrate with Gabya's mk13 GMLS magazine. "Refitting" Atmaca to existing ships is only matter of removing AN/SWG-1A console and installing Atmaca's launch console. Its architecture is readily compatible with ADVENT so its literally a "bolt-on" and "plug and play" experience.. Not to mention missiles are cheaper. Call me biased, but in my opinion, 40 Atmaca + 32 ESSM missile loadout on a Gabya frigate would easily make it the best anti-shipping surface platform in all western Navies. At least until US manages to develop an antiship missile to stick into Mk41 VLS tubes.. For your other considerations.. Atmaca is *significantly* better missile than RGM-84 Harpoon (99% of Ship-launched Harpoons are still Block 1D, Even USN ordered only 60 block II RGM-84L Harpoons). It has twice the range, it is 33% faster, and judging from videos flies noticably lower.. Plus, Atmaca has datalink, man-in-the-loop ability, INS and autopilot for following a course before attack, all of which Harpoon Block 1D lacks.. Spec-wise, Atmaca is pretty comperable to (non-existing) "Harpoon Next Generation" (same feature set, slightly lower range vs bigger warhead).. Exocet MM40 Block-3 also compares well in features, but its inferior in both range and warhead. Also "proven missiles" isn't really an argument. Neither Harpoon or Exocet has succesful combat records to label them "proven". If anything, Harpoon is proven to usually miss their targets, and exocets are proven to NOT detonate when they hit their targets...

In case of a clash, Greece will not have a floating ship, an operational navy or airbase, an airport to land a plane, an army base in a few hours. Entire planes took off from Greece will weather fall like apples from the tree or they will seek asylum from Turkey on the radio to land in Turkish bases. S400's will literally hunt them otherwise. No. This is not how naval war works. if you even fired the most powerful misfile in this planet onto a destroyer, frigate etc. (Even if you fire 10 of them to same exact point ) that ship will not sink at least an hour. Most of the time will never sink. However, the fuel and weapon systems, missiles, rockets etc every thing in it will explode like a nuclear bomb, probably all of the ship personnel will die or will have permanent disability for rest of their life (Such as burning life! Weapon systems, electronics, engine, radars, defense systems of that ship will be completely destroyed or completely disabled! That ship will be like a giant sitting duck in the middle of the sea! Just one single ATMACA is able to all that damage just with hitting the ship, does not matter which part of the ship it hits! 2. missile will sink the ship around 10 to 30 minutes after hitting it.

There are many things to considering not just speed but adequate sizes and weight can go in VLS and longer range to suits to destroy target without losing any of friendly crews. If Turkey want massive size supersonic P-700 Granite from old Soviet, that's simple but that's not what Turkey would want.

It is no secret, that Turkey aims to build up an almost complete independent Arms Industry as fast as it can. That's why, for now its priority is on developing similar variants of existing Systems. And for a good reason. Example: Canada banned the sale of Target Systems(Wescam) for Drones to Turkey, after the Armenia-Azerbaijan War. But Turkey had already developed an alternative(Aslesan CATS).
