Thumbs up to "Wiley", the man who dived into the sea to rescue the passenger who had slipped from the helicopter sling and was unconscious in the water. After rescuing him, Wiley then swam back to the sinking ship and was one of the last 2 people rescued. Amazing bravery!!

Worked on the Oceanos for quite some time, there was ALWAYS something. Threw a prop off Egypt, and drydocked, Greek crew and Captain bloody incompetent, Staff captain not much better, lifeboats practically rusted to the davits. Still have some photo's I took on board during the drydock period in Pireaus. She was old, and passed it really.

I'm fairly certain this was the Oceanos. No one died, they were all saved by the helicopters. The last person lifted from the ship was actually a lounge singer who was the staff member who orchestrated the entire evacuation effort.

You forgot to mention the cowardice of the captain who did absolutely NOTHING to help that situation. It was the cruise director and the entertainment staff who pulled that off. (Prior to the helicopters arriving). That snake kept trying to sneak into life boats, and had to be pulled off by the cruise director.

I understand wanting to get your wife and daughter off the ship first. but you as Captain have to stay with your ship as it goes down until every last person is off. that is the law of cruise ships. you knew that when you fucking got the job. it's like they're getting their permits off the back of cereal boxes now.

It's actually "Maritime Law" the captain is the last one off & often they go down with the boat/ship/ocean liner. The captain didn't leave the ship until in fact there was only himself & one passenger left on board as it's clearly stated at the end of this video.

That wasn't the captain you moron, it was a navy rescuer and one passenger.. the captain made several attempts to board a lifeboat but was held back by the cruise director. He stayed onboard and when the helicopters came he put himself in a harness while most of the passengers were still onboard waiting.

Not the first time I recall a Greek captain and crew being first in the lifeboats. When I go on cruises I always ensure the captain and crew of the vessel are not Greek. The Italian captain of the sinking Costa Concordia "fell into a lifeboat" would you believe?

earni Last There were obvious reasons for them not to do it, I guess. Hard to land with 6 helicopters constantly flying around, bad weather, lack of proper landing area in the ship or bad coordination. Still the main thing is, that they succeeded to rescue everyone, and that's great. Doesn't mean that things shouldn't be reviewed and improved.

Dropping untrained people on a ship at sea posses a number of risks. The chance of someone getting injured or killed in a process like that is very high. It might also be quicker to fly 14 miles than to try an negotiate a moving ship at sea.

If the life boat situation had been taken care of correctly and to protocol they probably wouldn't have needed several helicopters racing against the clock to save all those people left onboard. Must have been a scary scenario not knowing what may happen next!

And what good is being lifted off the ship only to crash in the ocean. Are you actually so dense that you think the copter really didn't need more fuel and just left to top off? Do us all a favor,... if ppl gon' build ships, they should at least have the benefit to put enough life boats on the ship so that way if the ship were to sink, every1 can get off safely

It's required by law that there are enough lifeboats for everyone aboard and to have mandatory lifeboat drills.

The Captain and crew who left on the first life boat should be jailed.

So did the captain get jail time? That is the Oceanos. Every person was saved from that ship. The captain left before the other passengers, and the entertainers on the cruise had to conduct the rescue.

if you watch this reverse, it's about a ship that's coming out of the sea while helicopters are putting people on it..

Have yet to hear of a ship that sank where the captain and crew didn't leave on the first life boat, leaving the passengers to die.

It's a pretty modern cruise ship but the lifeboats were sucky and old fashioned

Candy The Cat The ship was in bad position to drop them properly, and the rescue mission was started pretty late without any proper coordination except from the Entertainers that called for SOS, and coordinated the rescue. If the crew would have stayed, called for SOS, warned passengers THAT THE SHIP IS SINKING, and coordinated proper rescue, there wouldn't be need for helicopters to save people from the ship. Too many lifeboats were launched almost empty, or totally empty. Pretty common issue in such chaos, when people fight fear, adrenaline and want to survive.
