I saw an election campaign speech by Mary Lou on 24 November. 15 minutes long. Only the first 3 minutes were given to policy issues although she managed to avoid any reference to immigration and the remaining 12 minutes were dedicated to reunification. I am certain that outside of her party’s core vote which latest polling shows is around 20-25% at best, unification is nowhere on the list of priorities of the vast majority of Irish voters that need to be addressed. Whilst not wishing to diminish the legitimate aspiration of unification this seems to me to be a major problem in the SF campaign.

The Irish government dropped the claim so that the Good Friday Agreement peace process would work that gives only the peace of the North of Ireland to vote for their future. The only thing keeping NI within the Union isn't loyalism it's simply down to financial benefit so if the people in NI ever feel financially better being part of the Republic they will vote for it. It's also in the GFA that once the first vote on a united Ireland happens then there will be an affect of a new vote every 8 years so even if the first vote doesn't gain a United Ireland it will only be a matter of 8 years for the next vote to start.

In retrospect, Ireland would probably have achieved more than it has today , without a war of independence and civil war, the way the rest of the British Empire did after WWII. But for WWI, Ireland would probably have achieved Home Rule by Act of Parliament at around the same time as the Uprising and it would have included what we now call Northern Ireland. Had WWI not occurred or at least not when it did commence, there would probably have been no partition, Sinn Fein, FF, FG, the Troubles etc.

I do believe more and more Northern Irish see themselves as Northern Irish (according to polls atleast).. ; not ROI. Also, for ROI to absorb NI and keep it same as UK, then they'd have to fund it to tune of 3% GDP. From UK point of view.. I guess losing connection with NI would be sad from a point of British Identity. but, from the position of independence from ECHR .. which we might need to have.. there is an opportunity to leave it.. I suspect EU wouldnt necessarily want NI to be inside the EU.. as the situation with NI being part of the UK, yet under EU rules gives the EU massive leverage over the UK which is a very large market on their doorstep.. as long as NI is within the UK then they can have the UK following EU rules , then not at the table.
@murpho999Ай бұрын
EU has already said Northern Ireland would automatically become part of EU if unified. So no issue there. Economic cost of unification will be worked out and economy will also improve. Ireland would modernise the North’s economy which has been neglected by Britain. As for British identity, half the people don’t identify as British so don’t see why you’d be sad. ECHR point is relevant but only crazy regimes would want to leave it.
