Tbh, Iris Chang who in the first page of her fan fiction book already had 4 historical inaccurate statements is the "golden standard". Even if there would have been some, say, extensive measures, one has to remember it was against Republican Chinese people.

@@linc1494 Hahahha, I made the misstake of only reading your first couple of lines and put down a long reply. But you made many of my arguements for me. I agree with Matsui being a tragic person, since legitimate or not his view (he not only was atache or ''The China Expert'') put passionate about their culture. About his account, since I don't take a word from the Tokyo Conference seriosly (nobody does really) its not only his but written down by others. So that dicipline was gone and overly aggressive behaviour was showed is not in doubt. But this is all in hindsight. The Chinese were as brutal when given the chance, the Kwantung Army had made a huge road without sufficent nourichment etc. This is one thing, but what is most important is that Kuomintang engaged in total guerilla warfare. Ordinary citizens were made to dress up as Japanese soilders, normal people and then attack etc. Chang Kai Check's order was to keep the city at every cost. This would create paranoia in any military. The clue is in the sentence itself ''Rape of Nanking''. It was used in WW1 ''Rape of Belgium'' which was a massive propaganda stunt as well. Nota bene, the conception of Nanking as some holocaust was made much after the battle. And was created by the buthurt Chang Kai Check. The same dude who knowingly flooded the yellow river resulting in 800.000 civilian deaths ''fOr tHe gREaTer gOoD'' bitches about a battle he lost. The same dude who didn't want to co-operate and was a US puppet all his life. Another example about total bs is the notion of even aclaimed historians "Three Alls". Burn all, loot all, kill all. Off there is no record, but is taken as a collective truth. And even if it was, I mean. Its kinda a honest description of war... Not to mention the instances that wasn't even mentioned and was not about a war (because however horrible acts may be, in war there is different rules) like how the Entente treated and handled Greece in WW1, or India. And finally, yes. It was like that, they were liberators in a sense. Even tough ofc a great power wills to submit the weaker power. The pan-asian idea was welcomed. The total Anti-Chinese sentiment came later, when the Chinese were given all by the west. Chiang was happy to be a puppet, the people's of the old Qing Dynasty was obviously not. Wrote a very long answer nontheless haha.

What do you think about the unit 731?
@tatenokaienjoyer11 ай бұрын
Thats different from the propaganda and large exaggerations about their battles. Generals and prominent politicians didnt support or had large insight into it. Shirō Ishii's unstable strange personality is well recorded, for such a man to get (or rather take large freedoms) dictatorial powers on any unit is very unfortunate. He was everything BUT the ideal Japanesse (he wore dirty clothes, his sword wasnt fastened, very manipulative, lacked any discipline prone to outbursts, power maniac etc etc). But there as well, the Victors write the history. Shortly, for him to be given any power within the state aparatous was a big misstake. But then again, he wasnt given total authority but as above mentioned smartly navigated.
@henryhammerhead150811 ай бұрын
@@tatenokaienjoyer so... Tojo didn't well know about the unit? The atrocities that the propaganda claim were really committed?
@tatenokaienjoyer11 ай бұрын
@@henryhammerhead1508 I think I answered that above. The thing is that people seem to think Japan's ''journey'' starts with Tojo. He has taken the form of a symbol for everything ''bad''. 731 was operating much before he was even a minor political player. Manchuria at the time was not integrated into Japan, which made way for both positives. Such as it til this day being the most advanced part of China. And negatives, such as people like not only Ishii but also Doihara obviously not fit for the task being given, and the central goverment or army (the army/goverment/''extremists''/navy dynamics) not having oversight. Just too ad: britts and every other country did similar stuff, don't mistake yourself on that. The whole thing about ''examining'' inmates started with the Boer war. As I wrote, the unit wasn't used as it should have been, it was abused, misused and is a stain on wartime Japan. 731, from my knowledge did become kinda messed up. If that answers your question. But I very much doubt the extent (Chinese and US have been known to fabricate much about IJA). But even if one buys into the Wikipedia article 100percent, it does not reflect Japanese policy at the time nor military or navy in any way.

Its scary to imagine the sheer bravery it took to actively invade a country in those times. You didn't know how many enemies there were, where they were all positioned, how many civilians would collaborate with them or become partisans, how fortified their defenses were, or if you'd even survive the first 5 minutes of combat. Even with modern weaponry battles can still take hours and hours. All you knew was that you and your fellow soldiers had to rely on each other no matter what, that even seemingly weak foes could never be underestimated, and that if you lost your country was going to be defenseless against the enemy's retribution.
@tatenokaienjoyer2 ай бұрын
Today killing is simply work of machines. You don't know how many drones will drop bombs on you. Death itself loses its essence, its sacredness. Today there is more to be afraid of, because there exists no honorable and noble death. It isn't the enemy man that is stronger or smarter than you, its simply a button clicked on by some nerd hidden away. And yes, that is indeed so. I have read many books about the wars between 1800-1940s and that comradery is always there. In fact, in many cases (esp ww1) they say that the war was their best years because of the comradery. There was something pure, yes cruel but nonetheless human about that.
