Sinusitis, also known as sinus infection or rhinosinusitis, is a very common condition where the paranasal sinuses are inflamed, causing congested nose, headache and facial pain.
Paranasal sinuses are air cavities in the bones of the skull. There are four pairs of sinuses located on either side of the head. They are the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses.
The sinuses are lined with respiratory epithelium producing mucus. The mucus drains into the nasal cavity through small openings. Impaired sinus drainage has been associated with inflammation of sinuses. When a sinus is blocked, fluid builds up, making it a favorable environment for bacteria or viruses grow and cause infection.
A typical sinusitis symptom is described as a dull pain or constant pressure commonly localized to the affected sinus. The pain may worsen when the person bends over or while lying down. Symptoms often start on one side of the head and spread to the other side. Acute sinusitis may be also be accompanied by thick nasal discharge of yellow greenish color.
Sinusitis can be caused by:
- Allergy(allergic rhinitis): allergens such as pollen, pet dander… may trigger inflammatory response of the mucosa of the nose and sinuses, resulting in excess mucus production, nasal congestion, sneezing and itching.
- Infection: infection usually occurs as a complication of a common cold. Impaired sinus drainage due to inflammation of nasal mucosa during a cold often leads to infection of the sinus itself. Cold-like symptoms plus headache, facial pain or pressure are common complaints.
- Other conditions that cause blockage of sinus drainage. These include: structural abnormalities such as deviated nasal septum; formation of nasal polyps.
Treatments vary depending on the cause of sinusitis:
- For allergy: intranasal corticosteroids are commonly used.
- For viral infection: symptom relief medications such as nasal spray for irrigation and decongestion; other conservative treatment for common cold such as rest and drinking plenty of fluid.
- For bacterial infection: antibiotics may be prescribed.
- For recurrent or chronic sinusitis due to structural abnormalities or nasal polyps, nasal surgery may be recommended to clear up the drainage canal.

This was the most painful things I've ever went through. I literally felt like my eye was budging out due to the pressure with a dull throbbing headache, I literally was crying out of pain but also crying helped sooth the pain for just a moment. Mine started as Influenza A and developed into this, I don't wish it on anyone. I did just about every home remedy I could try but in the end the doctor prescribed me steroids and antibiotics.

I’ve had sinus problems ever since I was a kid, every once and then I’d experience these kind of headaches. The doctor who diagnosed me with sinusitis gave me medication that I would use whenever I feel it. It’s been almost 6 years since I had sinusitis. And it sucks, it hurts so much whenever the headache just happens. Can’t force myself to do anything because I just feel lightheaded and the headaches just makes it worse.

This has caused me some much trouble. Mine started back in 2017 but I don't like asking for help for things and I waited one year to mention it. By that point I only asked because my head was hurting so much. I could barely hear out of my right ear. I was losing vision in my right eye. And I completely lost my sense of smell. But my sister who happened to dislike me said I was acting for attention. And everyone believed her even though she has a history of making things up against me. Since I was too young to go to the doctor by myself I had to just deal with it without medication or support. They often called me pathetic crazy and emotional. Then my mom gave up much later and took me to a doctor. And they said it was definitely real. But they never apologized for anything they said. I think the sinus infection did not cause me damage but everyone not believing me did.

Is anyone else getting severe eye pain? Like there's a sharp pain in and around your eyes? I get that same sharp pain in my head as well, like it's not a headache, it's sharp pains in my head. I have extreme sensitivity to light & I can't move my eyes as much. The doctors have told me that I have a sinus infection but none of them clarified if it was bacterial or viral. Therefore, I'm not being treated properly for it & now my symptoms have lasted just over 4 weeks. My father had brain surgery and gets intense pain in his sinus which causes him to faint from the sudden blow of pain. I thought it could be allergies, because its random and ibuprofen helps. after 3 weeks of bactrim and prednisone, I have less pain and am getting better. However still not feeling back to normal. Still have dizziness at times and vision issues and pain. They say it can take 4-6 weeks. Side effects suck they make everything worse.

I have this mate I’m 22 now when I was 13-16 I had really bad head aches and I used to take meds all the time but growing up it doesn’t hurt that much but when I touch under my eyebrows it hurts and when I get a head ache it won’t go until I go to sleep at night it’s crazy and the doctors in my country said they can’t take it out

I would like to know about the effects of dry air on sinuses. I heat my house with a wood stove and often sleep next to it. Until this year I paid little attention to the humidity, which I have since measured at around 10-15% when it is cooking at full blast. I believe I have developed nasal polyps as a result, because I’m now getting regular sinus infections, pain in my face and corresponding pain in upper teeth, etc. My throat will also feel tight and I’m experiencing post-nasal drip and annoying bouts of throat clearing with slight stomach nausea.

I also feel like I'm drunk from sinusitis. I have crackling in my ears and tinnitus. Dizziness is more like balance problems resulting from heart palpitations/internal tremors. It's better now, but after the holidays in December I felt severe brain fog and extreme fatigue. Now there are still these internal tremors, sometimes insomnia and excruciating sinus pain. Niacin helps with fatigue. I have had sinusitis many times, but after covid it was heavy metal.

Sometimes it's brown shit that comes out, or reddish which I'm guessing is blood from all the blowing. This is kind of scary because it doesn't match the average stuff.
