a detail i really love that’s very small is that Adaine didn’t fail her entrance exam to Hudoll because she wasn’t smart enough, we all know she’s insanely intelligent, it was because her anxiety got to her and she had a panic attack and couldn’t finish the test. the panic attack thing is something i really love because it’s not a mechanic in game, she and brennan homebrewed something that would objectively make the game harder for her because it benefitted the story she wanted to tell and Adaine’s story of mental illness is one of my favourite things about fantasy high

@liamross340
@liamross340 11 ай бұрын
you perfectly put it into words. she’s so good at working with what brennan gives her it sometimes feels like she’s an npc there to guide them along with their journey. i don’t think the intrepid heroes really have a group leader in any of the campaigns they all work together and listen to one another but Siobhan always seems to know what to do next

She is the ultimate in supporting. I can’t think of a time she tried to take the main role in a story arc but I can’t really think of one she didn’t help shape. She has also let more characters go than any other d20 actor I think. Both Riva and Misty Moore were retired after one season. She fulfilled their character arcs while helping her friends and so she let them retire. She definitely also fits the co-dm role. There’s a reason she’s the first non-dm hired to the Iyengar-Mulligan Rules Lawyering firm.

She also rarely steals the spotlight to make a bit happen. Zac, Murph and Siobhan are very giving improvisers. They would rather fade into the storyline than step on someone's shadow. That said, CC's video aged like fine wine because since Mentopolis and Burrow's End we got to see her as a vital lead and, Man did she shine 🥰

I love how physical Siobhan gets while roleplaying. Her body language and facial expressions and voice really manage to sell the emotions she's trying to convey. It would be fine if she didnt do this, arguably not everyone in the group does to this degree, but she manages to elevate any scene she's involved in that much more.

She also, from the very beginning, coordinates every single outfit that she wears to fit her character. I honestly think the other players saw her do this from the early episodes of Fantasy High and decided to join her. She commits to her character harder than anyone else.

I know this comment is from five months ago, before Burrow's End, but just tacking on to this are all of her bits as Jaysohn. Siobhan doing the little punches and kicks while pretending to be asleep when she's not even in the conversation that occurs are absolutely hilarious. It really does make the world feel more lived in.

Totally agree - I first saw Siobhan in Starstruck Odyssey, and when I moved on to Unsleeping City I was shocked to realize how much of what I thought was her real life physical presence was actually her embodying the character. Like I swear she seemed physically TALLER as Misty. But it really clicked for me in UC s2 when she played Iga and you could see her *blinking* differently, embodying the character even while just staring at her zoom camera during long scenes she wasn’t in. She’s an incredible actor!

I love a bit of Siobhan appreciation. She gets overlooked often. Including by me. I didn't connect to Adaine (exploring why she reminded me of someone I used to know who forward projected that anxiety and became mean often). But by Misty I got it. She is a wonderful screenwriter and I think that feeds into her ability to scope Brennan's world for opportunity. She is often the hero of another story and prodigal child in one. I adored Rosamund and Riva

It’s also interesting to note that she also pitched a different character for Unsleeping City. She also pitched a Rogue that lived in the sewers. But she chose the Broadway Star archetype because Kugrash already fulfilled that part of the world and she purposefully wanted to explore a different part of the world. Unsleeping City chapter 1 would have been immensely different if we didn’t have Misty and we might have missed some really cool perspective on the setting.
@devenseltzer6618
@devenseltzer6618 11 ай бұрын
I went back and watched the video where she talks about that other character option, and her crust punk rogue lived in east village, not the sewers. definitely a cool character concept, but as Brennan explained it it was kind of halfway in between Pete and Kugrash, and like you said without Misty we lose the entirety of broadway in Unsleeping City, and a lot of the fae stuff is significantly less important and represented by the characters. Misty isn’t really my favorite character of Unsleeping City (I still really like her and she’s a lot of fun, but i don’t connect with her the same way i do with other character Siobhan plays), but i think she was the right choice for the campaign, even if the crust punk rogue is more individually interesting to me

Riva from Starstruck Odyssey is one of my favorite actual play characters. "Please hold!" has me cackling like a jackal every time. I love how Siobhan often plays characters who are immigrants within their world/context (drawing on her own experience as an immigrant, I assume). As you say, she makes choices which both fit perfectly into the world and help to expand it. Adaine being from Fallinel enriches our experience of Elmville. Misty being from Faeirie enriches our experience of NYC. Iga being from Poland enriches our experience of NYC.

As someone who loves the Far Traveler background, my experience definitely plays into that. I'm not an immigrant, and I've lived mostly in a single county my entire life, but in my childhood we moved _a lot._ I went to 4 different elementary schools and 2 different middle schools, and as a kid, your whole world is your school and your neighborhood. I was the new kid four times before I turned 14, and two times before I was 8. The culture and everything was all pretty similar, but the specific people around me and the established social dynamics were vastly different each time. I had to restart the process of making and maintaining friendships several times as an ADHD weird kid, which increases the difficulty a lot So I'm pretty familiar with being thrown into a completely new place and having to survive socially with very little established knowledge to draw on. It's something pretty integral to my being, I'm not even sure if i could play someone who's been in the same place their entire life, bc I just don't have the experience to understand that

Just stumbled into your video and cannot pass up the chance to sing praises for Siobhan as a player. She may not have Ally's iconic nat 20s or Emily's combat prowess, but she's the brains of the group. How she always stumps Brennan and the rest of the table with how knowledgeable she is of the setting, without it being meta game-y is a delight to watch.
@fatim0nster
@fatim0nster 11 ай бұрын
Oh but she does have Emily's combat prowess, it just so happens that her moments either have smaller kill count, damage total, or she prefers to make actions that help other players shine. She's a fantastic and incredibly creative team player. Remember the way she used Web so that she and other players would throw concrete golem off balance in FH? What about that time she used Dimension Door to teleport above the spell-cancelling bubble, bypassing it and allowing a martial character to get close to the lich in the Stock Exchange battle in TUC?

Adaine is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time. Siobhan often falls into a leadership role but in a very subtle way. The rest of the table will almost always listen to what she has to say and follow suit. She’s incredibly intelligent and so goddamn funny and roleplays excellently. Adaine’s relationship with Aelwyn is one of the best pieces of roleplaying i’ve ever seen. And she does this all without hogging any spotlight (not that I think any of the d20 players do) but she does have a great amount of restraint. Her characters have so much heart and just based on the characters she likes to play you can feel how kind funny and smart she is. I don’t necessarily think she’s overlooked I think everyone gets a lot of love but she’s not talked about that much and I’m glad that’s changing

On a more direct playing perspective, Siobhan really is the one that cements the whole party together by always putting herself in the middle ground. Even when the story focuses on her character she always leaves room for other players to interact, and never completely disappears when not in the spotlight. It helps compressing the highs and lows of other more intense or chaotic players toward a more stable center, which is perfect for a show like D20.

It’s very telling how good Siobhan is at putting her characters in the world, when on multiple seasons there is a fight almost solely based around her character. Aelwyn at The House Party, Her Opening Night on Broadway, Majority of the Falinel arc. Honourable Mention to the Neverafter Princesses. She’s rarely the main character but she always gets her main character moment which I just love.

Siobhan is definitely the most underrated member of D20, so thank you very much for your video. She also is genuinely an excellent mechanical player. Her move with Riva in StarStruck Odyssey when she teleported into an enemy ship and one shot basically the entire crew?? When she Scried Kalina in Fantasy High season 2 using the divination Nat 1. Basically her entire gameplay as Misty Moore in USC. (And I am surely forgetting a ton of other moments). And of course finally she's IMO the one with the best roleplay capabilities. She feels very connected to her character and does not hesitate to make decisions that on a meta level as a player she full well knows aren't optimal, but are what the character would do (Like with Iga in USC when she was very reluctant to join or help the group because of her fear of magic). Anyway Siobahn rules, she might not be the most abrasive, chaotic or loud but she definitely is a crucial part of the cast, and her absence is very noticeable when she's missing.

One thing I love about Siobhan's play is her undercover chaos. While Emily is very explicitly chaotic, Siobhan is quieter. I often think of her as an instigator, like when she told Lou that she'll pay him twenty dollars if he swallowed the little orange hat. She wanted to start some chaos, and used Lou as a weapon for it. As much as she makes Brennan's life as a DM easier, she is completely willing to cause absolute chaos. Often using the other people at the table to do it.

One thing that I really appreciate about Adine as a character is that she keeps evolving. In the first season, her main conflict is around her anxiety. Then, in the second season, you can *tell* that she's gone through character development because suddenly she's this amazing, spiteful, hilarious character that's just so much fun to watch. Fantasy High has a lot of fantastic characters, but Adine is consistently fun to watch no matter what's going on. It's really phenomenal.

Siobhan is honestly tied for my favourite member of the dome cause of one reason: her utter commitment to the character and the energy, from my first love Misty/Rowan blending a grounded immigrant story of home and belonging and a fantastical story of fae and the merit of adoration, to her underrated run as Sleeping Beauty as someone lost but wanting to find love and purpose on her own, to her more comedic characters like Imelda Pulse in Mentopolis and Jaysohn in Burrows End. Regardless of the circumstances everything character wise is real and expressed in Siobhan and it feels just so sincere I love it and her so much, plus I love a more subtle presence of quiet wit in the dome.

I felt like I never really dialed into this character though. The way I played him, he just ended up being a full blown edge lord all the time lol. Siobhan has been my favourite long before D20 was even thought of, and I'm so happy people are appreciating her properly

Loving the content so far! I feel like Siobhan doesn't get nearly as much love as the other D20 cast!!! I love talking about the craft of playing D&D so I have just been eating this shit up XD

Riva was my favorite. One of the best parts of her characters is that they really feel alive, constantly changing and growing. Riva coming from a race that literally has no concept of lying and therefore has no jumping off point was wonderful. She was able to play in the space still because she is very intelligent, but her naivete still shines through so beautifully in her clinging to the idea of being her own boss.

this video got me back into d20 during the summer of 2023, just cuz I needed to see what a fae Broadway star would be like. incredibly grateful cuz otherwise I would have never seen tuc (which is now one of my favorite pieces of media) and would have never gotten the balls to go look for people who'd like to play dnd with me. wild how something can change ur life so drastically lol.

I've only been watching dimensions 20 stuff for a few weeks, and only seen the high-school one (currently near the end of season 2, but I keep thinking about when she is panicking too much to fight Golden Hoard and says to Jawbone, "My parents left and I don't know where they are." God, that broke my heart!!

Always loved Siobhan even before D20 -- her CH skits are always a hoot -- but it was in ACOC where she _really_ nailed it. When that big spoiler thing happens, it was the best acting I've ever seen in a live play. Her sorrow and grief and anguish felt all too real.

My friend has told me a few times that out of the whole D20 cast, I am a player most like Siobhan and that in combination with the title to this video made me so nervous to watch it lmao. But listening to you break it down, I totally see what my friend means. I think I feel a little more confident as a player even though this video is about Siobhan lmao.

My husband is that player in my games. I find myself writing more storylines and plot threads for his characters than the other players, because it is jusy easier to do. He makes these interesting characters that have these well defined backgrounds with puzzles to unlock and clear npc entanglements. His characters are intrinsically a part of the world, and the other players just live in it. I in turn try to do this in the games I am in too, I love giving my DMs story fodder.

My first DM hated that I wrote a backstory for my character, because he wanted to make it up himself. He told me I was an orphan, so I wrote WHY I was an orphan.

Meanwhile I get the one that always going to play either a tiefling who's goal is to throw a wrench into the rest of the party's plans, and the one guy that resolves every conflict by throwing an axe at someone.

I’ll be honest, I had always liked Siobhan as a player but until recently I hadn’t realised how much I’d been sleeping on her as a player. Fantasy High Junior Year specifically was what made me realise it, when after the party everyone is talking and they more or less go "god I’m so drunk" (I'll admit I’m not good at analysis, I probably missed some subtle roleplaying elements) while Siobhan was roleplaying like she was a drunken mess. It’s that kind of immersion I always strive for as a player, and I’m so upset I didn’t notice it sooner.
