@IfISpeakBigTrouble5 жыл бұрын
Actually you only need a license to watch the BBC. Other channels are fair game
@Martiansfromthemoon4 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. By owning a TV and having access to other channels you inherently have access to the BBC. You have to have a license no matter what.
@IfISpeakBigTrouble4 жыл бұрын
Martiansfromthemoon literally isn’t the truth. As a recently graduated student (the biggest target for tv license spam letters) I had to research this as to not get fined the majority of my student loan. You do not have to pay your licence if you don’t watch or stream BBC content. The other channels are independently funded and don’t require a licence.
@Martiansfromthemoon4 жыл бұрын
@@IfISpeakBigTrouble that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is the BBC's logic is if you own a TV and can access the other channels. You can also access BBC meaning you have to pay for a license. I'm not saying you need it to watch ITV or Channel 5. But if you are watching those channels, then you can for sure watch BBC which is all the care about

Also, while GRR Martin took some parallels from this conflict (e.g. the names of Stark and Lannister: York and Lancaster), he says he was most inspired by the series of novels Le Rois maudits, which cover the 14th Century in France, the end of the Capetian dynasty and the rise of Valois; a period with a very similar feel of dynastic rivalry.

Fun fact about the British (myself included). We have November the 5th, where we celebrate the failure to overthrow the government. Why is that interesting? - well, most cultures celebrate a great revolution (independance day, Bastile day, etc etc etc). But the uk celebrates quite the opposite. It explains a lot about the British Psyche.... Another way to look at it is that we celebrate the failure of the plot that would have resulted in a great deal of death and a far-from-democratic change of government.

+goofy goober Fun fact: That is because Irish still holds more to the old Gaelic than English does... and the Gaelic was formed by the Romans giving the entire UK area (called Britannia, Hibernia, etc) an alphabet, and the Britons (as the Romans called them, at least in the first century AD/CE) making up their own language, probably without allowing the Romans to help them. So, the fact that a great deal of Gaelic does not sound as it looks, is not surprising at all.
@andrewlwatts9 жыл бұрын
+adrianloveslucius There's no Gaelic in English except for a handful of loan words. English is a West Germanic language, Irish is a Celtic language. They're totally separate branches of Indo-European. English developed from the languages of the Anglo-Frisian (think: Aenglish) tribes from what is now The Netherlands who came to Britain starting in the 5th century or so. And was later influenced by Scandinavian (Vikings - also Germanic) and Norman (French - Romance family speakers) invaders. The various native tribes on the islands of Britain, Ireland, Man, Guernsey, etc. had their own languages (the Celtic family) before the Romans got there. The Irish had their own runic-descended writing system (Ogham) before later picking up the Roman alphabet.

no, the two fingered salute was first recorded in miners strikes in the early 20th century, using it to tell the news crews to go away, while the myth about captured archers is bollocks, simply because the French would just execute captured archers as they had no ransom value, unlike captured nobles
@azzameentv9 жыл бұрын
+Field Marshal Fry Actually the two finger salute dates back to Roman times. There are accounts of it being used as a vulgar gesture, the V-sign representing a roman word beginning with V which was offensive - though in all honesty I can't remember the exact latin word.

+tehufn The long bow was upwards of 400 lbs. Seriously, they would train boys from a very young age to work up to that force, and they could fire off several arrows in 30 seconds. The strength and training required often resulted in skilled longbow men having disproportional muscle mass on their right arm. It sometimes even caused the shoulders to be uneven. Kind of like those joke drawings you might see about a guy who masturbates all the time, except it actually happened.

Unfortunately, that's almost certainly a myth about the origins of sticking two fingers up ('flicking the Vs'). The first ever record of the V-sign comes from a 1901 film (that's 500 years after Agincourt) -- it can be seen being used by a worker outside Parkgate ironworks in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

They used it to taunt the French knights into charging...then they would massacre them for about the 78th time in that long, long war. The French threatened to cut those fingers off...they also hated them because the knights were nobility and the archers were peasants, it is probably true.

@AntoniusK9 жыл бұрын
FireFyfe I mean for a soldier, for someone who has to use it continually. 140lb are generally for hunting, and if a soldier needed a more powerful bow, he would have gone with a crossbow.
@firefyfe62119 жыл бұрын
Nope English archers did use 120-140lb, their spines were twisted because of the action of drawing a bow

Just to clarify- I don't think Brits are annoyed by Americans lack of knowledge about the country, but rather by their superiority complex. For example, 'USA, USA, USA'- so annoying and infantile! Especially when she was telling them an interesting fact. 'Our civil war was cooler'- or the way he assumed when she mentioned a civil war it must be America's even though the bloody video was suppose to be about Britain! (And our civil war ended with an execution of a King, and the dissolution of the monarchy for 11 years, decide yourself if that's 'cooler') He was then surprised Britain had even had a civil war! Despite the fact our country has existed for thounsannndss of years and has a much longer, complex history. Meanwhile American is the teenager of countries; only hundreds of years old. But rather than humbly admit they are a good nation but a nation still growing they instead purport to be 'the best in the world'. Also, just a few side notes; the way the presenter was doing a terrible English accent at the start and end is annoying because you yanks actually seem to think we talk like that! Oh and comparing the Superbowl to the world cup is annoying too; the Superbowl includes one country, the World Cup is EVERY country in the entire world nearly. (I didn't mean this to be such a bitchfest, I'm just trying to help Americans understand our annoyance)

+Becki P The USA, USA, USA chant was less of a genuinely patriotic gesture but more of a joke portraying American patriotism. And when he mentioned that our civil war was cooler, he obviously didn't have any background knowledge regarding any of it's contents so his statement was probably not serious in the slightest. And I highly doubt that most "yanks" actually think you talk like that. I agree with some of what you said but most of these points are nothing to be annoyed about. When foreigners use stereotypical American accents I find it amusing rather than annoying.

The only reason the American Civil War is more famous then the British Civil War(s) is because the Americans have so little history that they have to make certain events seem very significant.

The TV licence thing is technically only to watch the BBC. It is why it will remind you that you need one if you try to watch anything on their website and not any other sites. It is how the BBC gets a lot of their funding and why they don't need ad breaks.
@cholland674 жыл бұрын
You need a licence to watch live TV. Whether it's BBC or one of the others itv channel4 or channel 5.
@Jonnym294 жыл бұрын
@@cholland67 It has been a couple of years since I've seen the actual wording of the TV licencing forms so may have changed, however it explicitly stated that it was for the BBC in the info pack I saw, despite all advertising suggesting otherwise. Interesting fact same info pack specified different prices depending on colour or black and white TV's. (which would suggest that it was longer ago than it was can't have been much more than 3/4 years now) Also had a section on only radio licenses, which I had no idea was a thing until then. So going into specifics everyone's TV licence is technically speaking a TV and radio license. And yeah when I get bored and have time on my hand I read shite most would ignore.
@Jonnym294 жыл бұрын
Also by what is stated if you try and watch anything on the BBC's website. It is no longer just watching BBC live that you need a license for but anything on their website. For about a year now the website's reminded me I need a license to watch the BBC.

Actually, the story about the long-bowmen starting the finger gesture is probably bollox.
@ionlymadethistoleavecoment17239 жыл бұрын
No it's real. English archers were some of the best and killed many French troops. So if any were caught, they're index and middle fingers were removed so they couldn't draw a bow
