Surprising how quickly things move on! Had a 1999 1.25 Zetec Fiesta. For the time it was so good. Beautiful handling, fun to drive and a great engine. Move to my current 2002 Fabia though and it's so much better. It's not fun to drive, but you don't have to think about it. Holds the road like glue, good performance and gearbox is so light. Even today I could do 100s of miles in it! 😃

Some of my favourite superminis spanned the 80s and 90s. In many cases the 90s would take it for me. They were still a lot like the cars we loved of the 80s but slightly evolved with that little but more refinement. By the time we were into the 00s cars in this class had grown to the point where manufacturers has created a sub class below the superminis we had come to know. The 90s were perhaps the last true evolution of this type of car.
@cc21622 жыл бұрын
To me the mk3 Fiesta was the most modern looking supermini of its time. If you went for the HCS engine it lacked performance and sounded like a sewing machine. But it was a solid, basic and reliable unit. I like the Metro, but the Fiesta was a better car in almost every way.
@The_One_Over_There Жыл бұрын
It's also younger though, There for i'd expect some improvements here and there. But the Metro has that typical 80's charm to it, Which i like. But than again, The Fiesta is further developed. it's a hard choice to make between the two. To me at least.

Ford produced a lot of crap in the early 90's. Prime example, Escort Mk5. But it's still much better than the Metro. At least Ford managed to angle the steering wheel correctly lol. Metro's are horrible things to drive and reliability wise they're a bit of a joke. However, many a bad car has it's enthusiasts so fair play to anybody who owns one. To be fair the HCS engine in the fiesta was hardly robust! All the same though it's the Fiesta for me all day long.

Thank you! Obviously I realise the Metro is not an objectively good car, but it's fun to keep memories like this alive as they were such a stalwart of the British landscape for the 80s and 90s.

agreed the mk5 escort was the biggest mistake they ever made. I think at the time they put all their efforts into the mondeo as the fiesta limped along being basically the same car from 1988-2002 till 2002 when the mk6 came out
@Xenon0000000000001 Жыл бұрын
@@chrishart8548 The mk4 Fiesta was mechanically very different from the mk3, but without much in the way of external changes (so the reverse of the mk2 to mk3). You got the Yamaha 1.25 and 1.4 engines, which were a massive improvement, and the ride, handling, and steering were all excellent for the time.

My dad got an Autsin Metro back in the 90s (used) and aside from being underpowered, useless at carrying more than 2 people and the ridicule of the BMW driving neighbours, it was the most economical car I've seen to date. A mate had an Aprilia moped that was less fuel efficient than my dad's Metro.

I would be interested to see a early 80s Fiesta against the Metro, I had a Fiesta, my sister a metro, I bought and have had loads of Fords, mainly as my dad wanted us both to have Metros! I was rebellious! The intermittent wipers on my 1.1L V reg (PDS 604V I think!!) were the only ones on any of the family cars at the time!!! Another good video

The Mk1 Fiesta was imported from Germany to the US starting in 1978, FWD subcompact with very good MPG. After 1980 it was subplanted by the new for the US Escort, marketed as a global subcompact. The base Fiesta came off as very cheap, which it was. Going up from the Base model I feel made the car more livable. Of course the Ghia was top range model, one I would have chosen.

Of course the best choice of all is to own both - so you win!

No brainer, by the time the Mk 2 Fiesta came out the motor manufacturing landscape had changed. Build quality was a thing by that stage, but the Metro still had that old BL "slapdash" feel about it.
