The musicianship of this group is way underrated. This group grooves. I love the bass line.

Words cannot express how much McGeoch's sound meant to the Banshees. Like Marr with the Smith's they are irreplaceable. I never want that sound to end...

I don't understand how people can say she sings horrible here. Here it's sounds more true, more real than the album version. I would never be able to get to the pitches like she does!
@j_freed6 жыл бұрын
Siouxie's performance here is fairly solid, but it needs a touch of reverb and delay otherwise it's too dry and grating sounding. Every singer needs their particular setup, and every voice interacts differently with each microphone.

because people got adjusted to mindless, programming pop musicians not real truthtellers of bands in the past.

Saw them 3 times around this time, twice at Hammersmith Palais, right at the front, skinhead riot at the 1st one. This is when they were at the top of their game. Your right, McGeoch was a genius.

I love the fact that she's chosen to wear the Star of David for a gig in Germany - especially given that this is the same woman who'd once accessorized with swastikas...! Always ready to un-nerve and disturb; never one to make it easy to categorize her.

It's great to see John playing these songs live, vs. the Nocturne concert.
@tellingpool15 жыл бұрын
Siouxsie wrote this song after getting into trouble wearing a swastika herself (she did it for fashion, a bit naive on her part) and subsequently National Front-type followers starting showing up to her performances. She nipped the swastika backlash and NF attendance with this song.
@j_freed6 жыл бұрын
tellingpool - Siouxsie also made ironic references to "Deutschland, Deutschland Über Alles' and commented how great the Hugo Boss- designed uniforms were that the Nazi SS wore. They were in fact great-looking clothes, it's a fact and I don't think that was at all an endorsement of Hitler's views. People are stupid mugwumps, basically. This is a really cool song though regardless of your ideological endorsement of any country.

Saw them a few months before this at the Capital Aberdeen..my first ever concert aged 14..this song was burned into my mind..all the punktypes were bouncing up and down in the middle and I just stood over at the left side watching in awe...I seem to remember the programme said something about her wanting to be a hooker?!?!? Always puzzled me that 🤔

Her make up looks so fresh here in the opening song, Israel. Watch the entire gig and see how it wears off more & more :). @ OfraHaza, i think she is one of the best live singers ever.. You have to consider how intense they toured at that time, and after the years, touring did let her voice suffer, but in 81 she sounded just brilliant!

I believe she did...my dad drove a taxi for a short while back in '87 & he picked her up for the concert my brother and i went to in Santa Cruz, CA...he said she was all out of it until they gave her her fix in the back seat of the cabbie...perhaps he didn't know exactly what she was taking, but my dad used to be a bit of a party animal! He told us about it when we got home from the show that night!

John McGeoch was amazing. Anyone know how to play the lick starting at 2:46 on guitar? I'm trying to decipher it between this performance and the studio version, but he plays it so fast, and it's hard to tell exactly what he is playing. Maybe I'll get it eventually.

She is the Goddess, above al other dieties. Even the mediocre songs are embellished over time, not this is mediocre. Even Madonna paid her homage, llisting her and Elizabeth Frasier as influences. Siouxsie reigns supreme!! Anyone seen Dreamshow?

@Locoroco2fan If you read my comments again, you will realise that I have argued exactly what you say, and given two different examples of U2's later 'borrowing' to boot. U2 'utilised' (to put it nicely) the basic structure (and even the guitar solo) of 'Israel' for 'Pride'. How you could possibly have interpreted the reverse is a real head-scratcher.
