Lyrics below:
From the cradle bars
Comes a beckoning voice
It sends you spinning
You have no choice
You hear laughter
Cracking through the walls
It sends you spinning
You have no choice
You hear laughter
Cracking through the walls
It sends you spinning
You have no choice
Following the footsteps
Of a rag doll dance
We are entranced
Spellbound
Following the footsteps
Of a rag doll dance
We are entranced
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound, oh, oh, oh
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound
And don't forget when your elders forget
To say their prayers
Take them by the legs
And throw them down the stairs
When you think your toys
Have gone berserk
And it's an illusion
You cannot shirk
You hear laughter
Cracking through the walls
It sends you spinning
You have no choice
Following the footsteps
Of a rag doll dance
We are entranced
Spellbound
Following the footsteps
Of a rag doll dance
We are entranced
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound, oh, oh, oh
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound
Spellbound
Following the footsteps
Of a rag doll dance
We are entranced
Following the footsteps
Of a rag doll dance
We are entranced

I so have ran through the woods now that you mention it, and in the 80's as a matter of fact. Stupid me though, I did that before I found Siouxsie, and goth music, which is my favorite to this very day. Not long ago, 'Trees come down", and then, 'I could get bored, in the flat field'. Assuming I was alone, I panicked when I heard 'I said Run, I'm right behind you!' Yes my musical tastes have grown since Siouxsie and the Banshees to include Fields of the Nephilim, Bauhaus, and Skeletal Family. I never new my favorite music was goth, until I found it.

I’m an OG: original goth from the early/mid 80s . Siouxsie was/probably still is considered a goddess back then. I saw them in Finsbury Park in Camden London in 87/88. It was fantastic. I saw a lot of cool bands back in the day so to speak. This sure af takes me back.

It’s a classic song, many non Goth bystanders like me love it, and the band. The innovative talents of all band members are undeniable, Siouxsies iron fist in a silk glove persona also makes her unique and special and she nails that down in every song.

It’d be 20 years since I heard this. Just absolutely froze when it popped up as the closing credits to S4 Stranger Things. Longer time since I sat through credits to a Netflix show, but had to…rocking out to this. What memories. The sound is still so great, so fresh - and this song still just grabs me and freezes me in place. Still love it the way I did the first time I ever heard it, mid-1981, final year of primary school. Heard it and felt like I suddenly understood what being an adult was going to be like. Amazing song and I’d forgotten how mesmerising Severin’s bass line is - it just wraps the drumline up and pulls you upward and downward through the song. Fantastic stuff.

This song always gave me the chills. I never looked up its meaning, but I interpreted it as a schizophrenic hallucination in a child-tragic and horrifying. And the lyrics about the elders not saying their prayers I took to mean the abuse of those grown ups who should have been protecting the child but utterly failed at their job. The song to me is about child abuse and so terrifying, so sad. What a haunting piece of art.

When I was a teen, I would listen to ‘Face to Face’ from Batman Returns. Little did I know that it was performed by Siouxsie & the Banshees. 2 weeks before Part 2 of Stranger Things 4 came out, I listened to the Juju album all day after listening to Halloween at the end of ‘Monster House’. Coincidentally, Spellbound was one of those songs in that album 😅.

I think you're right. It was such a different vibe in the US in the '80s. It's like UK music was willing to explore darker themes and less conventional instrumentation than American pop songs of the time. People/culture was too manically happy in the US.

Look what the US did to heavy metal and punk rock. Even though punk started in the US it never became very popular here... until the abomination that was pop punk in the late 90s. LOL! The kids nowadays are hearing some '80s gems! My teenage daughter loves Stranger Things. And loves the Kate Bush song "Running up that Hill" And now she asked about Sioxsee and The Banshees. Told her that they were huge when I was a kid myself during the '80s. A darkwave (gothic new wave), goth rock, post-punk/dance-punk band that was in the late '70s, '80s and early '90s. Keep digging up songs/videos from Kate Bush and Sioxsee and the Banshees songs, young ones! They had cool videos and songs. Kate Bush "Cloudbusting", "Rubberband Girl" and more. Sioxsee and the Banshees "Hong Kong Garden" , "Christine", "Happy House"(The Weeknd sampled this) , "Kiss them For Me", Cities in Dust" and more. Kudos to Stranger Things, nice.

There was no "goth" as such, just a bunch of people who dressed in black and listened to Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Joy Division, The Cure, Killing Joke, Specimen, Danielle Dax, etc. "Goth" wasn't its own subculture, it was a subset of what came after punk. There weren't enough of us to be separated like that! 😄We were people who had been into punk and wanted to take it further. Genre labels came much later.
