1. kiss in the dreamhouse there's really nothing else that can be number one. it's the most unified, consistent album, capturing not a single sound, but a single theme, and every single track is good. it's one of the few albums in the world i can play through without skipping any song because i love them all.

1. Juju - Monitor / Nightshift/ Halloween 2. Tinderbox - Lands End / 92 Degrees / Cannons 3. The Scream - Jigsaw Feeling / Suburban Relapse / Overground 4. Peepshow - Rhapsody / Scarecrow / Carousel 5. Kaleidoscope - Paradise Place / Skin / Red Light 6. Join Hands - Placebo Effect / Regal Zone / Icon 7. A Kiss In The Dreamhouse - Painted Bird / Obsession / Green Fingers 8. Hyaena - We Hunger / Blow The House Down / Take Me Back 9. The Rapture - Not Forgotten / Sick Child / Love Out Me 10. Through The Looking Glass - Johnny Jewel / This Town Ain't Big Enough... / You're Lost Little Girl 11. Superstition - Silly Thing / The Ghost In You / Little Sister I own in excess of 400 pieces of Banshees vinyl (many imports, ltd editions etc), love almost all their albums & know all the Banshees songs pretty much word for word... apart from some of those on Through The Looking Glass & Superstition, which I've just never particularly enjoyed. Superstition, in particular, just doesn't sound like the Banshees to me (Which is odd given their diverse musical legacy). The production is slick but lifeless, the whole thing sounds very trebly and, to my mind, the songs are weak. It seems odd that Superstition seems to be appreciated much more in the USA, than here in the UK... Maybe it's a cultural/style thing?

Sure you probably hear this all the time but I'll say it anyways because it Bears repeating oh, you have really excellent taste in music. Thank you for covering this ban is they often get overlooked and you helped to remind me that I've thoroughly enjoyed and loved this band's music over the years but also LOL that I had forgotten to listen to their second album at all which your recommendation got me to go out and listen to right away and you are absolutely correct I don't know how the hell I missed it. Thank you for covering these bands you are like the only person I've ever seen it talks about deconstruction or Gene Loves Jezebel or Peter Murphy. In fact you brought me back to Peter Murphy as I thought that he had retired or something and was not putting out albums anymore. Stay amazing I hope your album is doing well and I I appreciate your efforts to keep good music out there

Siouxsie And The Banshees is such a great band, have been a big fan of them for a long time. All of their albums are very interesting and have their own unique sound compared to each other. No two are exactly alike. Hard, but not impossible, for me to rank them because each album has it's own unique feel and specialness to it. I believe that you can be a fan of an artist and still have favorites and least favorites. Here is my list and top 3 songs included. You and I picked some of the same songs for top 3's. My list: 1. Juju - Arabian Knights, Sin In My Heart, Monitor 2. Kaleidoscope - Christine, Tenant, Paradise Place 3. Tinderbox - The Sweetest Chill, Cannons, Lands End 4. Peepshow - Peek A Boo, Scarecrow, Rhapsody 5. Through The Looking Glass - Gun, The Passenger, Strange Fruit 6. The Rapture - Sick Child, The Rapture, The Double Life 7. A Kiss In The Dream House - Painted Bird, Melt, She's A Carnival 8. Superstition - Kiss Them For Me, Shadowtime, Little Sister 9. The Scream - Switch, Overground, Jigsaw Feeling 10. Hyaena - Dazzle, Belladonna, Blow The House Down 11. Join Hands - Icon, Playground Twist, Mother (Oh Mein Papa) (tried to write this as a list but for some reason it keeps showing up as a paragraph.)

Great video! It's funny how a beloved band's discography can be completely intertwined with our own biographies. In my case, as a teenage and YA goth in the 90s and early 00s my favourite albums were probably the post-punk proto-goth albums with McGeoch (who was and still is my favourite guitarist ever), but as I grew older I got more and more into their later stuff. Nowadays I'd say that Peepshow is my favourite and Superstition my 2nd favourite I guess, with my absolute favourite track being "The Ghost in You." What an amazing band, the best of their generation imho.

Many arguments can be made throughout our lives about who is better than whom, who is smarter, who sings "better," who's the prettiest and who is the not-so-prettyist. These become extremes of opinion. But just because The Rapture (their final album) is pristinely produced, and pop-song-oriented does not mean it should be last. I argue that the songs (as songwriting goes) are stronger than some of their earlier records. Remember that with each year the band had more time to learn more about musical structures and broader harmonic possibilites. In their raw, punk stage, the energy and dark, mysterious nature of their personalities came thru some often chaotic and even clumsy music. But just because you have created an original style and approach does NOT mean that experimental albums better. A classic album (just like a Classic film, or Classic novel) needs to incorporate ALL of the aspects of music, theatre, production, and vocals. Their musically weakest albums are more like Cult classics. Again, just as in a Cult-classic in film. It's not a CLASSIC--it's a cult-classic). I don't see how Juju (his #1 pick) could be better than A Kiss in the Dream House (his #7 pic out of eleven albums). I think A Kiss in the Dream House supremely incorporates both intense, inspired song-writing, but also the a raw, almost sub-human savagery that almost evoked polished chicken bones and other bizzare tribal instruments of excoricsm. It's that FEELING. Especially highlighted in "Green Fingers." Or take the near insane head-spinning sound of "Circle," with it's theme of the downward-spiral found in the trappings of post-modernism culture as we know it. Then they suddenly throw in a lilting, beautiful ballad, but where she beckons her lover to LITERALLY melt. To contrast, althoughThe Rapture, as an album, does not flow so smoothly (good album must have that flow of an expanded emotional journey), you can still pick out songs from it to add to the top of the Banshees strongest material. As far as "A Kiss in the Dream House," i compare it to The Smiths "The Queen is Dead." Seminal works, but which were so original in sound that they possibly came from another world. Although not included here, "Boomerang" should be at the top. And it should be included because it was carried along by Siouxie and Budgie. With Budgie's tribal drums and Siouxsie's complimentary voice, the record sounded like some sort of bizzare secret incect-carnvival hidden deep in the Amazon jungle. What record, in recording history, can be compared to Boomerang? It was like Sesame Street on acid.

i really like your view on music. With that said, my view is much different. Because SATB were so creative and honest with themselves, each record holds so many individual evocative thoughts, views, and feelings that these albums were more of a creative exercise of raw release or purge, whereas they developed a sort of system of album creating, ( get it out of their psyche, then move on to the next.) where upon, leading to the final creation "The Rapture" they realized they were done. I honestly cant say what is my favorite. With each having such a strong view point, instead, i find an album of theirs is best at fitting with what my individual mood needs at that time in my life..... which is always perfect. i really cant say that about any other band. They are SUBLIME !

Juju was the second record I ever bought,(the first record was Killing Joke's self titled), back when I was young 11 year old in 1981. Juju is just about flawless and still captivates me to this day. It opened a door for me I never even knew existed. #2) A Kiss in the Dreamhouse. It was the next release and by this time Siouxsie was a goddess walking the earth to me. #3) Kaleidescope. Started buying the back catalogue. #4) The Scream. #5) Join Hands #6)Hyaena #7) Nocturne. I know, not an album, but a great live tape that I still watch often. #8) Tinderbox. Big release when it came out. Lots of play on mtv for Cities in Dust. Saw them twice on that tour, DC and NYC, and the band was really good and Siouxsie's voice was entrancing. Oddly enough this one hasn't held up over time for me. Loved it when it came out, but now it's one I only play a few times a year. #9) Peepshow #10) Superstition #11) the covers record and the swan song didn't do much for me and still don't.

Very interesting video Bret. In the UK we had a single release: Hong Kong Garden which was a success for them followed by the Scream. I bought both and went to see the band live in Bristol, UK and they rocked. Siouxsie was really pee'd off because the support was Nico and no one in the audience was into her and some idiot threw a glass of beer over her. Siouxsie came on and said you insult my friend you will not get an encore. She played a very angry awesome set and then stormed off. It was one of the best gigs I have seen. After that I heard various singles but only Happy House and Dear Prudence are ones I know. For some unknown reason I never bought any more Banshees albumns. Your video has inspired me to try some so thanks for that. I'll see what I can find. Robert Smith only helped them out while they found a permanent guitarist.

1 *Tinderbox* Carruthers was such an underrated guitarist and I rank his work alongside John McGeoch. I thought his playing was evocative, subtle and mysterious. Perfect for the Banshees: Land's End, 92 Degrees, Sweetest Chill and Candyman are best for me. 2 *Dreamhouse* For years this was the most respected Banshees album (critically speaking) here in the UK. It was the one you bought first for your introduction to their studio albums. Painted Bird, Slowdive, Cascade and Obsession standout tracks for me. 3 *Peepshow* Loved the arrangements. Siouxsie's voice is great ( for me it went downhill after this ) and the arrangements are clever. Rhapsody, Carousel, Last Beat of my Heart and Peek a Boo. 4 *Juju* Utilised the great John McGeoch's presence best. Nightshift ( always great 'live'), Monitor and Spellbound standout. 5 *Kaleidoscope* Great singles, McGeoch's debut. Dated a bit for me, but still a few timeless tracks: Trophy (great opening riff, wish they'd played it 'live' more), Christine and Happy House. 6 *Hyaena* Overall a bit disappointing but you can forgive their self indulgence for the beauty of the singles 'Dazzle' and 'Swimming Horses' 7 *Through the Looking Glass* They never just did a lazy cover of anything. Their take on 'Wheels on Fire' being a case in point. It sounds nothing like any previous version. 'Gun' is an obscure track I'd never heard but I enjoyed hearing it. 'Trust in Me' stands out for Siouxsie's understated, silky, yet still powerful vocal. 8 *The Scream* Felt they got better the farther away from their punk roots they travelled - but some enduring songs here: Metal Postcard, Switch, Carcass. 9 *Superstition* Too "studio" for me. Bit overproduced. Standout tracks: Kiss Them For Me, Little Sister. 10 *The Rapture* Swansong and clearly a band whose heart wasn't in it. Standout track 'Tearing Apart'. 11 *Join Hands* Love their version of 'Mother / O Mein Papa' cleverly done. But a hugely overrated record for me. Interesting concept and an enigmatic cover, but the songs don't deliver. I wouldn't buy this album as an introuction to this great band. They rarely performed any of them 'live' as staples in their set lists - there's a reason for this.

Thanks for the video on Siouxsie & The Banshees. Although I've been recollecting vinyl about 3-years now and nearly everyone of my interests over the years is represented in my collection I have yet to get anything by them. I think I might have Nocturne some where but I could be mistaken. Although their LPs where widely available here in the US in the eighties, presently (unlike the Cure) their stuff is only available in the UK so it's really expensive, and then you have to add $20 shipping on top of that. I guess if I could find one seller who is offering their titles I could do a sort of combined shipping to get them to an agreeable price? Otherwise they are long overdue for remastered editions + boxset.

Hello and thanks for watching! I feel like a lot of the Banshees records had been reissued over the last few years, as I remember seeing them at stores, but yeah they seem to have all disappeared now. Hopefully they’ll get a repressing. Did you get the All Souls comp that came out last year? That was a really good one.

Hi Bret, I would love to give you an honest opinion on this ranking but quite frankly I cannot. I have never listened to half of these albums in full. I am very familiar with their 86 through the early 90's period and that it is all. I was working at the record store while all of these albums were released so I listened to them a lot. The only mid nineties song I ever really listened to was her collaboration with Morrissey on the Timi Yuro song 'Interlude'. I have a few versions including a long one which tends to bore me a bit. Anyways, you did a nice job with this. I know exactly the guitar part 11:28 that you are talking about in 'The Sweetest Chill'. Although the whole bass arrangement reminded me of 'Some Girls are Bigger Than Others' it was such a great song. 'Tinderbox' was such a great album. Way to go Bret. I also just noticed that you have 900 subs. That is quite an accomplishment. Have a great weekend~ Rob/Boston

Rob, first off thanks on the 900 subs congrats - I appreciate it. :) It was interesting reading about the Interlude recording experience in Morrissey's book - quite fascinating really. Well, for the ones I'm familiar with I'd rank them as following: 1. Peepshow 2. The Rapture 3. Through the Looking Glass 4. Superstition 5. Tinderbox. I came to them late. First song I heard was Peek a boo, and loved it. That song, Rhapsody, and Burn Up are my favorites form Peepshow, though there are others that I love as well. I totally disagree with your assessment of The Rapture--their best song IMO. Also like Stargazer and Oh Baby. I don't know if Through the Looking Glass should count since it's all covers, but I do like it. Trust in Me is good, I love Strange Fruit and The Passenger. I was disappointed in Superstition because it followed Peepshow. I did like Drifter, Silver Waterfalls and Cry. As far as Tinderbox goes, I didn't really like it. Cities in Dust was okay, but too much a product of its time. Didn't like Candyman. Not pleasant to listen to at all. Ca ca ca ca. Like listening to a record skipping. As far as the rest, I have listened to some of their older work. I agree that Icon, Overground and Dazzle are very good. Didn't like much of the rest, though. Not my style, I guess. I also really like Something Blue, but I'm not sure what album (if any) it is on.

My list: 1. Peepshow Easily their best work of their later career and entire for me. Their creative peak for sure. So diverse. Every song is a trip. Excellent vocal delivery. Great insightful, deep lyrics. And it also produced the wonderful avant-garde peepshow tour. With all that considered it's hard to say that it's not their best. Best tracks: Carousel, Scarecrow & Rhapsody 2. Superstition Ok so there's a couple duds on it (Fear & Got to Get Up) but the highs make up greatly for it. Had the band replaced these clunkers with the kiss them for me Bsides (staring back & return) I think this album would've been received a lot better. None the less I still put it at #2 cause it contains 3 of my most favourite Banshees songs.. Best tracks: The Ghost In You, Little Sister & Shadowtime 3. Tinderbox This was a tossup between Tinderbox and Juju but Tinderbox ultimately came on top. John Valentine was an extremely underrated guitarist and I think some of their best work is on this album. It flows very well with no true duds. Perhaps what's holding it back from being in the top two is the fact that a lot of the songs sound similar. But I love this album and the songs I list as the best are amongst my favourites in their entire discography Best tracks: The Sweetest Chill, Land's End & Cities in Dust #4 Juju Such an interesting and original album. Some very dark songs but some amazing stuff on here that no other band has been able to duplicate. The band really started coming into their own here Best tracks: Spellbound, Night Shift, Headcut #5 Kaleidoscope The first to incorporate more of a "pop" sound if you will incorporating lots of different colourful sounds and ideas. Not to mention this album translates extremely well live. Another unique album from a band that grew so much from their first two releases. This sounding like a different band completely. Best tracks: Lunar Camel, Paradise Place, Red Light #6 A Kiss in the Dreamhouse A fun and abstract album. To me this was like a Kaleidoscope 2.0 but diving deeper into the experimental phase also adding in strings, bells, organ etc. Some very catchy stuff on here. If you look back at it you can see this was the foreshadowing of the band diving into more of a alt rock sound. Best tracks: Painted Bird, Slowdive, She's A Carnival #7 Hayena The Robert Smith album ends up being a bit of a disappointment when you compare their previous 3 albums, not to mention his work with The Cure. The latter half is quite clunky with not a lot of standouts. However it starts off very strong with one of their best singles! Top tracks: Dazzle, Swimming Horses, Belladonna #8 Through the Looking Glass The covers album is pretty good. Well worth a listen but wouldn't be one I pick up much. Some nice work but also some stinkers when comparing to the original artist. Best tracks: This Wheels on Fire, The Passenger, Trust in Me #9 The Rapture Usually considered their worst by fans. However it remains more listenable to me than their first two efforts. Some very bland stuff on here with a horrible lead single choice. It provides a few nice moments and I must say for their final album it's not bad when you look at other bands final work. Best tracks: Stargazer, Love Out Me, Sick Child #10 The Scream I've only listened to this and the latter a handful of times but it has never grown on me. Granted I've never been a huge fan of punk music. In my opinion both are very noisy and nearly unlistenable for my ears. It does not contain any songs I like unless you count the later added "Hong Kong Garden" #11 Join Hands Again not my type of music. Lower than Join Hands simply because I skip most of the songs on here if I ever listen to it.

Hi Bret ! Great review despite we do not agree on the ranking order :-D. I started out buying the TWICE UPON A TIME singles comps to get a taste of SATB's and that made me buy all of the albums. Could you tell me why is it that the album versions have so much better sound than on this comp ? It was difficult for me to rank them, because individually they're so good an different between them, but roughly : 11-Into The Looking Glass ( horrible choice of covers, exception made of ¨This Wheel's On Fire¨and ¨The Passenger¨; passable singles) 10- The Rapture (liked only 6 songs but really liked them, the rest are too ballady; well produced with great turn-your-sub-off production) 9-Peepshow (2 horribly boring songs here, yet redeemed by 7 interesting ones and my all-time SATB's fav ´Peek-A-Boo) 8-Hyaena (a very even album; no tracks stand out but I don't skip any song, like them all. Could have been so much better if Smith had put a little more effort in it and production sucks) 7-A Kiss In The Dreamhouse (SATB's at their psychidelic peak, marred by the incompetent thin and harsh production of deaf dumb Mike Hedges) 6-Superstition (fantastic production, a total pop departure; different, bold, machine-laden, oriental elements abound) 5-Tinderbox (the strongest, guitar-driven album from their ¨second era¨, and Carruthers from clock DVA on guitar !) 4-The Scream (the punkiest yet totally post punk, matter of fact blueprinting the style on its very own !) 3-Join Hands (the most tribal, darkerst, bleakest, influenced JD's Closer, has The Lord's Prayer on it as filler; what a wise choice-freakin' love the song!) 2-Kaleidoscope (the freakiest album; Jones and McGeoch, introduction of psychidelic elements) 1- Ju Ju (the strongest of them all; larger )than life
