Some people kid me for liking this group (we live on a ranch where country music rules), but they are awesome! Always have been a favorite of mine and always will be.

On this day in 1981 {August 22nd} the Manhattan Transfer performed "The Boy From New York City" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand Three months earlier on May 23rd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #7 and spent 21 weeks on the Top 100 It reached #8 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart Was originally recorded by the Ad-Libs in 1965; their version peaked at #8 on the Hot Top 100 chart In the UK in 1978 the Darts' version peaked at #2... RIP Mr. Clark

In case you're wondering, this is at a concert in JAPAN. Manhattan Transfer... "Big in Japan" He says: "Tatte Kudasai" which means... "Please Stand" Also, conservative crowd free from hollerers (that would show disrespect) is a dead giveaway.

i like both versions (haven't heard the Darts'), but especially love The Ad Libs'. Honestly, they aren't that different, but that being said, I don't understand the critical hoopla over the Manhattan Transfer. It's really like they got a lot of credit for rediscovering a great song ignored in its day. Fun performance here though.

In which Janis Siegel tears the roof off the auditorium. Would ove to know where she gets her energy... Have viewed many of the MT videos on KZbin, and am concluding that this Japanese concert may have captured them at the peak of their powers. Exceptions being Offbeat of Aveneus and the powerful 'So You Say' from their Brasil album, wherein Cheryl Bentyne gets to show her dramatic range and power.

@cjs33139 ~ They didn't do the original version of the song, if that's what you meant. The original hit was done by the Ad-Libs. And the lead singer, "this white girl," is Janis Siegel. Can I assume that you DIDN'T mean that only black girls "got pipes"?
