Matheus Rocha Actually, the comment boxes are not very small. They allow something liike 100 thousand characters, before the browser crashes. But still, not enough for dealing with Elliptic Curves, which are essentially needed to prove this theorem. LaTex script should be allowed here.

the prize (like the nobel prize for other fields) is given to recognize people for extraordinary contributions to their field, therefore it (understandably) takes some time for the true scientific breakthroughs to reveal themselves (imagine how many articles are published in the sub-genres of each field). This one however would be easily identified, but the reason simply is that the Abel prize is a very young price, the norwegian academy with the establishement of a mathematics prize named after the norwegian Nils Henrik Abel, made a prize at the level of a nobel prize that can recognize contributions in any mathematical field (which is not covered under the Nobel economics prize).

From UPI By Eric DuVall | pdated March 17, 2016 at 5:45 PM " Andrew Wiles, 62, was a professor at Princeton in 1994, when he and a protege, Richard Taylor, a student at the school, submitted their proof of the math problem, known in math circles for centuries." Why does not Taylor get some credit also ? The article used the word "their" proof.

He got a prize a few years after publishing his proof. That prize was specifically for Fermat, and only Fermat. As for why the Able prize was awarded to him now, I guess it was because it did not exist when Wiles proved Taniyama-Shimura ( proving Fermat as well.) And then I presume the Abel stewards or what you call them decided that after the fact, Wiles was worthy of the prize seeing how it was one of the major math proofs in my lifetime ( of 50 some years:)

+Rebassed Firstly, you are probably not aware of how much mathematical breakthroughs have an impact on science and technology, which are the basis of our modern civilisation. But this kind of discovery is not just about that. Sir Andrew Wiles has done something legendary for humanity, dedicating his life to this problem and proving that with perseverance and hard work we CAN know the intricate workings of this universe, which are completely unfathomable to most. This is about advancing the frontiers of knowledge and becoming deeply connected with the truth, and changing the world. How can you say this isn't a noble cause?

He did not prove the Fermat theorem. He derived a proof for the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture which was then attached to the Fermat theorem, as a way to indirectly create a proof that was much more open to publicity, as a proof for the Fermat theorem, since the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture is the rarified air known only to a public of professional mathematicians. mathworld.wolfram.com/Taniyama-ShimuraConjecture.html
@michaelbauers8800
@michaelbauers8800 8 жыл бұрын
He definitely proved Fermat. If you read about him, you will find he was keen on proving Fermat. When he found out that someone had linked the proof of Taniyama-Shimura to proving Fermat, Wiles decided the problem was worthy of spending years of his like on ( something like 8 year of his life.) So chronologically, Wiles was first interested in Fermat, Wiles studied elliptic equations, Wiles found out the he could justify working on Fermat by proving T-A, Wiles announced solution of T-S, Problems were found, Wiles managed to fix proof

How is this a breakthrough? Why, in what way is this important?
@aajjeee
@aajjeee 8 жыл бұрын
KigreTheViking basically there are complete fields of maths that can only be proved if fermat's last is true, there already are several results that say''if there is an answer to (a different math problem), it will be of the form of a^x+b^x=c^x '' so they dont have a real proof until they prove that fermat's last is true i have limited knowledge but some of those are important
@adip8
@adip8 8 жыл бұрын
is this a genuine question or are you belittling this incomparable achievement?
@michaelbauers8800
@michaelbauers8800 8 жыл бұрын
Wiles proved the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture which says that all elliptic curves can be mapped to a modular form and vice versa. This hypothesized back in the 1950s or 1960s I think, but Wiles proved it. And because someone had linked Fermat's last theorem to T-S, it was rather an amazing proof. Firstly Wiles, by proving Fermat had proved a famous 300 year old problem. But he also proved T-S which many math papers were based on ( probably starting the paper by presuming T-S was true.) Of course this sort of math doesn't seem to have any immediate real world application, but you never know what it's future importance will be

No, it was initially announced with an error, but Wiles resolved the issue about a year later. No clue why he just got the Abel prize, but he had, a few years after the proof was published, won another prize just for solving Fermat ( the prize was solely for that purpose, waiting for someone to claim it, and Wiles did)
