I’m citizen of Ulsan, Korea, and my current job is reliability test engineering for automotive parts of Hyundai. I’m thank to Mr.Turnbull for his heritage. He brought many manufacturing and engineering technology to us. I’m impressed that earlier Hyundai factory is quite premitive that workers carries body panels by hand, hammering and welding bodywork. It’s so contrary to current YeomPoDong factory. I also thank to seniors who built this factory and city. Now I’m living my life on this industrial foundation. It was good time to see old scenery of Ulsan and many fathers young times.

@Doramutong Korea's ship building industry also owes a debt of gratitude to a couple of Scottish engineers. I think Hyundai tried to look them up to give them an award, but couldn't find them.

Hyundai workers don't complain and work in challenging conditions with unrealistic deadlines. The UK workers didn't even know how good they had it at the time! I guess the Koreans just wanted to be successful more than BL did, and that's why they are here and the UK car industry (well, UK-owned carmakers) are basically reduced to building hand-built vehicles out of small garages. Sir George was The Man! A very good video illustrating the talents of a man who helped build the Korean car industry. Too bad he couldn't have saved BL or Talbot later in his career...his death at 66 was too young.
@megashae4684 жыл бұрын
It is very unfortunate that the korean car industry is beginning to resemble BL’s last years. The workforce is overpaid and prone to strikes, and the companies keep trying to go abroad and pay foreign workers rather than pay their own and have management be a hassle. And the fact that unions get to control who is employed at the car factories is ridiculous. The spirit in video is long gone.

I grew up in Calcutta in the 80s...close to a Jetty in the Calcutta Port Trust property leased to the Nepalese Government...I used to watch hundreds of then relatively then unknown Hyundai Ponies being transported by road to Nepal and gradually this trickle eventually became a flood..While India still made antiquated British Cars under license... Hyundai came to India by setting up a factory in Chennai (Madras) in 1998 and today Hyundai Kia is the 2nd largest car manufacturing company behind Suzuki in the world’s 4 th largest car market...

Funny that before Hyundai ever sold a car in the UK under that name, the BBC reporter had already chosen the ridiculous "high-un-die" pronunciation of Hyundai while Turnbull pronounces it correctly repeatedly in the interview.

It's worth mentioning that Hyundai had already been building the Ford Cortina under licence since 1966/7 so they were not new to this game. They built Cortinas until 1982/3 and the 1983 Hyundai Stellar was a rebodied Cortina Mark 5 with a Mitsubishi engine. Still a huge achievement however.

@@megashae468 well from a general perspective I would agree with you (again general understanding of the brand) it is well known that hyundai is a major power house now which could make Kia to be seen as a shittier company but don't let that shadow kias reputation because they're still a pretty reputable company in comparison to other brands

Look at the pricing chart of Genesis models in Korea and then look at how much they cost in the U.S. They are not that different, and they even don't give discounts for certain new models (GV80, especially). Those days of 'pricing high in Domestic, dump in foreign' are long gone for good.
