While probably best known for his nuanced depiction of J. R. R. Tolkien's Gandalf, Sir Ian McKellen has a vast acting career on both stage and screen. More recently, Sir Ian has taken on the role of Sherlock Holmes in 2015's "Mr. Holmes".

he was the only one in the crew to meet Tolkien and was told he'd make a very good Gandalf, though. The only reason he wasn't cast as Gandalf is that there were a lot of horse riding scenes, while Saruman was mostly just talking scenes.

@@Anti-HyperLink A war between Finland and the USSR. (or Soviet Union) At the time the Soviet Union was under the rule of Joseph Stalin. A paranoid buffon who believed that Finland would join an alliance with Nazi Germany and thus launched a pre-emptive attack on the Finns. However Stalin was so bad at commanding the army that the Finns held their own. The Finns also received help from many nations including Britain. Christopher Lee was a volunteer from Britain and fought alongside the Finns against the Soviets. Ironically the Soviet attack caused the Finns to join up with the Germans, exactly what the Soviets had been trying to prevent.

It's funny that Lee wanted to be Gandalf, because in the stories Gandalf was offered to be the leader of the wizard council, but did not desire to be, and it was offered to Saruman instead. Saruman greatly resented that he only got the job after Gandalf declined. It's not a perfect analogy, but I find it quite humorous.

Lord Voldemort maybe they didn't want to troll but rather suggested the reason for him still looking so good: being gay. :) Who knows?

farinal Yup it's sadness all around. Sadness at poor Lee and how he's gone (may he rest in peace) sadness at McKellen's reaction to being forced to remember the death of his friend and even more sadness at the fact that eventually McKellan will share the same fate as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee

I started reading his "Grey Book" blog where he notes his time spent filming the first LOTR movie, it's so interesting and I love his takes on things!
