The problem with the funding for the NHS is that there are too many private companies leeching from that funding, so there's barely any left at the ground level to pay the frontline staff doing the actual work, which is why there's a staff recruitment and retention crisis And the private sector operating under NHS banners (dentists / outsourcing scans / elective procedures etc) have the luxury of saying no when they're over-burdened

Stop consultant doctors who are paid a high salary by the NHS doing private work and consultations. If they are employed by NHS they should not be allowed to leave NHS patients high and dry to go and attend private hospitals and patients. They can see private patients almost straight away and NHS patients have to wait weeks into months for an appointment. The NHS pay them to do this . Ridiculous. This and nursing agencies where staff get their cake and eat it. Start reviewing NHS REFORM here and this would save huge finances and benefit to the NHS and patients.

As a member of the ambulance service the biggest drain is people calling when they can get to the hospital themselves or for a pathetic reason. You don’t get seen quicker in Hospital if you go by ambulance, the opposite the sooner you get there the wicker you’re seen. So if you call for an ambulance and wait two hours then that’s two hours longer you spend in hospital. People need to fined for calling for an ambulance when you don’t need one. It’s an Emergency vehicle for medical emergencies.

Mainstream politicians *always* miss the glaring point about the financial issues within the NHS. The NHS has become massively bloated with managers, manager's assistants, and manager's assistant's assistants. Multiple jobs - paying upwards of £65k per year - for 'diversity managers'. I don't know about you, but if I'm in for an op, I want the person best qualified performing it, not somoene who's there to make up the numbers on some ridiculous target. Scale back on the bureaucracy, pare back the number of backroom clerical staff, and use the money freed up to pay and train doctors and nurses - make the professions attractive again. No government seems willing to accept that this is one of the primary issues causing the financial difficuties, why is that? Keir Starmer says his wife works in a hospital. She was previously a solicitor. Did she quit her high-paying legal career to be a front-facing occupational health worker? Maybe, or just maybe she is one of the highly-paid managerial personnel, who actually add no value to the NHS, but just take a substantial amount of money from it for turning up each day and shuffling bits of paper about. If she is, then it proves Keir's just got his snout in the trough like most politicians in this country. If not, then she is in a position to advise him of the problem, so I'd like to know his excuse as to why he's not addressing this important issue.

Agree with this to some extent. Way too many "managers" on 115k a year. However, an example of frontline managers - my wife works in ITU, her manager is on 50k a year to oversee 90 staff in a specialist area. Yet, the divisional manager is probably on £120k.

A decent nursing bursary whilst studying/training to help families afford to pay the bills ! And less going abroad for staff as a quick fix. Recruitment open to everyone not just certain groups because it fits a certain narrative/target and no having to write to HR with reasons why you chose a White person over someone else.

Mental health and long term health conditions such as obesity or chronic pain needs to be more taken seriously. We need more staff as well. We need more creative Therapies on the NHS as well. Nhs is still old-fashioned. More social care services and community services must be seen.

Just going to put this out there, the biggest drain on the NHS (as unkind as this may seem) is old people. I'm fortunate enough not to have spent very much time in hospital during my life but every time I have done (more recently with kidney problems), there wasn't enough beds available for young people because most of them were occupied by vegetating old people. I'm not saying it's their fault or that they are the problem but I do think the NHS would benefit from a re-structure of priority. We have separate spaces for children so why not do the same for old folks. Investing more facilities into retirement homes to better take care of sickly pensioners would be a good start.

I agree with you, old people are the biggest drain on the NHS. The average age of a patient is 60 I think. But due to years of community underfunding, the hospital admission rate for the elderly is alot higher than it should be. If there was significant investment in community services it would take alot of strain of hospitals and save billions. But this is long term planning and no government would commit to that as they know they might not be in power to see the effects.

I've worked in care homes (NE UK) for 20+ years. Elderly social care is near collapse, and has been that way for over a decade. There isn't enough money to even prop up the current failing system, where staff are on minimum incomes and staffing levels are deliberately undercut. Back in the 90s, elderly care was systematically privatised, and now there isn't even money to run it that way. The problem won't go away, because failings in social care continuously increase the burden of health-care.

In Spain its similar to NHS, the only difference is that staff are directly employed either on a permanent contract or a temporary contract. People are not employed vía shady offshore recruitment agencies taking their cut, which is quite large.

An insurance-based system would be better, as those on low incomes wouldn't have to pay in, while company plans pay for those in full-time employment with medium-high pay. Also, we should aim for quality of life as opposed to quantity of life. We're all going to become frail and die sooner or later, so let's improve quality of life for people before 60, as it'll naturally improve quality of life after 60, even if it means we die of natural causes before 80.

From his refusal to support strikes, to his promises of ‘fiscal responsibility’, to his nods to Thatcher on questions of law and order, however: it’s been evident for some time that Starmer is no friend - let alone leader - of working people. Those who remember the 2020 Labour leadership contest will know better than to trust any promises emanating from Starmer’s office. Three years on, not one of his infamous 10 pledges remains unbroken.
