The Monty Python star Terry Jones has died at the age of 77, four years after being diagnosed with a rare form of dementia.
Jones directed and starred in The Life of Brian, something his fellow Python Sir John Cleese said was the greatest gift he gave us all.
Sir Michael Palin spoke to Sky News and has been paying tribute to "one of his closest, most valued friends".

No. The Beatles were the Monty Python of music. Doesn't matter that they started before Python either, it doesn't have to make sense. With Terry gone the world makes a little more sense now, and is the poorer for it.

Even though i'm a big fan, Python was more like The Oasis of comedy not The Beatles in that they were talented at their job but took their crazy take on life from the people before them like The Goons especially Spike Milligan. RIP Mr Jones x

Terry Jones was the true backbone of Monty Python. He was arguably the most important of the Pythons, he may not be as famous or well known as say, John Cleese, but it was he who really got the show going, and made the show the style it was made in. And he was also the co-director of Holy Grail along with Terry Gilliam. He really got Monty Python going and without him there'd be no Monty Python.

I was brought up in the strict and depressing environment of a boys school and as a youngster I would enjoy secretly going to the cubby house at the back of the property to watch Monty Pythons Flying Circus on a little black and white TV. This didn't help me make any sense of my chaotic world at all, but it brought some diversion from pain of the bruises left on my arm by my older brother. I couldn't understand why Terry Jones was playing the piano nude or why upper class twits were shooting rabbits that were tied to the ground. with best regards Anthony,

I've watched many sketches in which he appears, since the sad news. Laughter is a great way to pay tribute to the comedy giant. I think most of us will continue to laugh at his characters and jokes, feeling a bit of empiness, knowing he's not with us anymore.

This came as distressing news. I had only recently watched Mr. Pither's Cycling Tour, which features Terry Jones and Sir Michael Palin prominently, and Mr. Jones' passing hit me hard. So long, Terry Jones, we hardly knew ye.

I've grown to appreciate both Michael Palin and Terry Jones great documentary presenters as well as founding members of Monty Python. Palin for his travel shows and Jones for his work doing shows like Crusades.

Thanks everybody for sharing your love in the comments. I'n not a big python fan but I love Terry's great historical documentaries. They should be a staple in schools for teaching critical thinking.

It was just Sunday I was wondering when Terry would pass. Mike is doing a wonderful job of speaking for Terry in a dignified fashion during this sad time.
