For those wondering what's going on: The penguin colony in Edinburgh Zoo was originaly established with eggs given by Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, most know for being the first person to reach the South Pole. In honour of his memory the Norwegian Royal Guard descided to adopt one of the penguins as the company's mascot, and later, in the 1960s, they began the tradition of promoting him up a rank every time the Royal Guards attended the military festival in Edinburgh. Since penguins don't live that long his name and rank is inherited by his oldest child, and after many years and many visits Nils Olav finally became a knight and general. It's just a fun teambuildng tradition for the company

If anyone is wondering why: Back in 1913, a Scottish-Norwegian lawyer and politician gave the Edinburgh Zoo a penguin and quite a bit of money in order to allow the zoo to establish their own penguin colony. When the Norwegian King's Guard went to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 1972, they "adopted" one of the penguins as a mascot and made him a lance corporal - just for fun. Since then, he's been promoted more or less every time the King's Guard returns to Edinburgh. He was eventually knighted. The original Nils Olav has unfortunately died, by the way, and so has his successor. So this is Nils Olav the 3rd. Having been part of the Norwegian Army a few years back, this guy technically outranks me. We might have few enemies, but at least we have fun.
