I know it doesn't sound possible but (there's always a but isn't there) but years ago in Montana where I live, we had a neighbor (about a mile away) who had a 200 pound sow snatched by a brown bear that weighed about 300 lbs. It jumped into their pen, grabbed the sow and jumped back over the pen fence. The bear took off with the sow firmly grasped in it's mouth and took off with the sow. There was no blood, no....well no nothing but we actually witnessed the bear running through our property with the sow still in it's mouth. We joined in on the hunt and eventually both sow and bear were found, although the sow did not survive. We had to have the bear captured and relocated as the pig owner didn't want the bear killed as it was just trying to prepare itself for winter but he also didn't want it coming back for seconds. It left absolutely no sign it had ever been there, although we have drier and rockier ground than there is around your pig enclosure. I have learned over the years that bears (along with lots of other animals) can do things you would never imagine possible. I also believe there would have been a much bigger and noisier incident if it had been a person/s. I will add that the above mentioned sow never let out a squeal and was just playing dead in the bears mouth while being carried away. Don't be hard on yourself as there are just some things you can't predict or really even do anything about. Feel better soon.

Here's why I think human involvement is unlikely: Someone who goes out of thier way to drive out to your property, sneak into your farm, and have the strength and machinery necessary to grab a pig, are probably not going to go through all that trouble to stop at 1 pig. They have the muscle and the truck space there. They'd just take all they could. What seems more likely is the pig pushed through or under the electric wire, made its way to the road, and had an adventure. Weather could easily conceal the tracks. If coyotes or other predators caught it, its remains could be well away from the farm. Someone may have found him on the road and taken him, thinking he was abandoned. It is possible he's still on the farm. He may have been feeling unwell, dug himself a den, and died under a tree or something.

Having raised many pigs in my life I'm confident to state it wasn't a predator as a 225 lb pig would be a formidable opponent even for a black bear not to mention the three other pigs would have joined in the fight. Based on lack of evidence of an escape I believe your pig was stolen which would not be a stealthy operation or easy. That leaves the question of who had access and time to capture him and remove him. Also the culprit may have been subject being caught on camera(s) and if so who knows the location(s) of cameras and could temporarily disable them. A process of elimination to decide who is the culprit.

on my friend's farm, one boar ate a 189lb pig in about four hours. this was known because that's how long my friend was at church that Sunday. he'd never had an issue before, nor were there any signs. boar ate enough dinner for three pigs later that day and you'd never have known what had happened if not for a few remnants in the enclosure (which was far less vegetated than yours), and his security cameras. with three pigs, it's quite possible for them to have eaten Sir Porkington and still be ravenous later. they are, well, pigs. check their poop. you'd find bone and tooth fragments if they ate their brother.

We raised pigs growing up. They are escape artists. Chances are he's forging through the woods right now or tearing up one of your neighbor's gardens. Don't be surprised if you find lead BB s in him when you get a call or find where he is. Don't be surprised if a farmer laid him down in a field and buried him. Especially if he was after crops.

With the recent flooding in the area I doubt there are many crops left to destroy; however, if a neighboring farm found him, they would probably reach out to their neighbors to see if anyone was missing a rather healthy pig before putting it down and/or making it into sausage ;)

What we have found interesting is predators typically wont come into a pasture with pigs in it.. Predators also pass up on eating the dispatched waste from a pig . We had a pig go missing a few years ago. The sheriff called me one afternoon and asked if I was missing a pig.. Well he's out here by the highway..🙄. Thanks to several wonderful people that stopped and helped we got him loaded up and back home.. Seems the delivery truck left the gate open .... A reminder for folks - if a gate is closed close it behind you.. Its there for a reason. I sure hope you find your piggy.. It seems odd no tracks and no sign of fence issues. Glad your home and hope you feel better!

I would ask the sheriff if any other livestock have disappeared in the area. As for going on vacation: I had a vacation and came home to 90% of our poultry being wiped out and the goat injured. That was one vacation, out of decades of taking time to nurture myself so I could better take care of the farm. You are not the reason things go well, any more than you are the reason things go sideways. You can do everything right, put in the best work, and the universe can still decide to throw you curve balls. Try to stay humble, which means celebrating what goes well, allow the emotions over what doesn't go well, and maintain your sense of humor over all of the above **because you can't control any of it** Do the bare minimum for a bit, covid is more likely to develop complications if you overdo it.

Morgan, Yes, growing pigs can be cannibals, and the incidence is higher in confined pigs than in dirt lots. Cannibalism in gilts can be caused by stress, pain, genetic factors, or mismanagement of farrowing. Also it wouldn't take long for the pig to be devoured and there would be little to no signs of the carcass. I hope that's not what happened and you find your pig. Enjoy watching your content. For the numerous people saying the pig has been drugged and stolen. Do you honestly believe 2 people (or more)could lift the pig in mud and carry him to the main road or the front yard and not leave tracks? Are the pigs near any mud banks, literally the only thing I could think is he's actually gotten trapped in mud maybe and its taken him under? if there are no tracks outside the pen not even near the stream where he could have slipped off. So so strange , only a larger animal could get over the fence but again no track or remains.

I’m afraid Sir Porkington either found a way to slip through that not so secure fence line, or somebody helped him, if the latter you should be able to see footprints I would think. Think about the stolen comment. With as muddy as it is, there would have been people footprints, probably at least 2 sets and there were none and no truck or car tracks.

@@GoldShawFarm But you surely told SOMEONE you are leaving. Like farm sitters or neighbors. You need to start there. Did they tell anyone you were gone? Your pig was 100% stolen and you got to investigate. Best start with the people who knew you were gone.

Based on the fact he seemed sluggish before disappearing, I think he’s dead somewhere a bit hidden and you’ve just not spotted him cuz you’re feverish and unwell. Rest up a let yourself recover, don’t beat yourself up ❤
