This is a 3t22. A 2t22 with a damper "valve" in each intake tube. (10 and 12 port stators) They are supposed to alternate opening and closing to produce a minor third Hi-Lo. The damper for the low note is not closing. At full speed, 3450 rpm, the siren produces notes D5 and F5, creating a resultant of Bb2.

Most European countries have or had a requirement that warning sirens have a standard pitch of around A-440 Hz. American sirens are generally almost an octave higher in pitch, and since America is on a 60 Hz. electrical standard, sirens run faster than on Europe's 50 Hz. system. Sirens in the Netherlands and some parts of Finland are higher, while Portuguese sirens can be very low pitched. Most sirens in the UK were dual-tone, but most have been removed.

This siren is a Federal Signal 3T22, which has dampers like butterfly valves to block the air intakes and make this alternating sound. The more common 2T22 siren is identical to this one but lacks the dampers. These are the closest sirens we have to British two-tone sirens like those from Gents or Carter, except that the 2/3T22 is vertically mounted and has projector horns.

The solenoids are powered by electricity, not air. This is a common thing for one solenoid to malfunction.

The lower intake tube damper is NOT closing. The lower note, D5, sounds steadily. Maybe its damper solenoid is burned out or open so no power is getting to it. The intakes and stator openings are screened so no nests, except for bees and wasps, can get be built inside.

Yes. The 3t22 is capable of "Pulse" -both dampers OPEN, both CLOSED simultaneously. Or Hi-Lo by alternating the dampers openings. I have heard Hi-Lo but never Pulse.

It could be doing "Pulse" and the lower 10- port intake tube damper, D5, is not closing! "Pulse" is both open/both closed simultaneously. Have never heard it in real life.

Wow! Will it sound? I have a flashlight siren with a little rotor inside a stator. For the same power, an electronicircuit with speaker would be much louder than the electricity used to power the little siren motor.

It's a 3T22, This one is doing a high/low signal and only 3t22 can do that because it has a solenoid.

Are there any others near this one that have a similar test schedule? I'll see if I can go snag a recording one day. One solenoid is inoperative.

The ACA Cyclone is apparently a real powerhouse: 50HP! Of course, if they bring back all the old sirens, they'd be electronic. FS is considering putting the Thunderbolt back in service. It looks exactly like it used to, but it was intented to compete with the whelen. As an electronic siren. The XT22's are most certianly goners. If you want to hear some good ACA sirens, go to Amarillo, Texas. kdksiren lives there. he'll tell you about them.

That’s a lie, the Thunderbolt will never be put back in service due to lack of battery backup. It was too maintenance heavy anyway. That’s why it will never be put back in service and why the 2001 replaced it.

I have never herd hi-lo in real life.... or pulse or a 3t22 the only siren I have ever seen are whelen 3016 ws and wps and 4004. JUST because of the nuclear power plant.

@form109 Like Whelens? The entire Whelen lineup is all electronic-and all of them suck. FS's EOWS 612 and Modulators are awful, but the latter would be ok. BTW this 3T22 is either doing Pulse or Fire Hi-Lo with a bad low tone damper/solenoid. I hope it's just doinig pulse...

yes i dont Like Whelens....or the EWOS sirens...we use Modulators in our Area,and they dont sound too good to the Ears....the FS 2001's are too High Pitched and seem to have Relibility issues....the 3T22/2T22 was a Very Good,musical sounding siren...as were all the other Old Sirens of Yesteryear...they need to bring them all back...tbolts,Allertors,Hurricanes....although the Sentries avalible sound very good. :-)

hmmmm....thats both good and bad.....Electronic Sirens just dont have the Punch and Authority that Mechanical Sirens have....the High Pitched tones dont Carry as Far.....my Theroy is the Pitch has to be High because the Loudspeaker Drivers in Electronic sirens dont tolerate low frequencies very well...Right Now Sentry is my Favorite MFG of sirens since they still make classical looking...and classical sounding Sirens....i really do miss the old sirens.. :-(
