My fun little headcanon for this song: The narrator/main singer (whom we’ll call BG for...obvious reasons) lives in a dreary, rural seaside town, like something out of a Tim Burton film. Despite their boring and monotonous lives, none of the residents seem to issue any complaints...except our protagonist. BG, a young fisherman, feels trapped and empty from the non-adventurous life he’s been forced into by his family. Howeeeeever, one day, while performing his fishing rounds, he hears the alluring song of the fabled sirens from far off. Although BG begrudgingly resists the urge to find out where this “beautiful” singing is coming from, it continues to plague his mind for the next couple of weeks as he goes about his daily life trying to forget about it. BG slowly comes to the realisation that the singing he’d heard must’ve come from sirens. He’d been taught about them (as well as other traditional folk culture items) ever since his brain began recording memories, but had never actually considered them truly existing. He decides to get some advice and asks his “brother and sister” (2:02) what their takes are on the strange occurrence he’d experienced. They both “shame him” for even considering going after the sirens, and urge him to take caution and just forget about what he’d heard. But how could he possibly do that? When everyone is yet to awaken (0:36), BG recklessly sets out against his family’s wishes to find the sirens. The feeling of adrenaline (something he’s never experienced before) pumps through his veins as he contemplates what he might find and the adventure that he’s finally about to go on. As he begins rowing away from the shore, BG reflects upon the regret he has to not have gone on this sort of wild expedition sooner (0:15) but sets up the resolve that hearing the siren-song once again will relieve him of his emptiness (0:18). With the time it takes him to row out to open sea, our protagonist has enough time to consider the danger of what he’s about to do, as well as the things his family has said to him in the past. He resentfully dwells upon how his family used to tell him that “the life you got is what you make it” (0:27) whenever he’d expressed restlessness at the monotony of his life, but quickly shoves away this thought with the excitement that he’s finally about to experience a true adventure. Eventually, he finds the location in which he’d heard the siren-song prior and is ecstatic to hear them singing once again (1:05). The sirens begin to reveal themselves one by one, and BG is taken aback by how similar they look to what he’d heard about in folklore and is filled with even more exhilaration at the thought of it (1:22) Suddenly, a wave of dread hits him as he feels one of the sirens’ cold, webbed hands (1:35) attempt to pull him into the bottomless ocean. BG realises the genuine peril he’s in, but as quickly as this flash of lucidity had come, it vanishes once more in the fog of the enticing singing of the sirens. These flashes of coherence and realisation come and go as the siren song continues to pierce his mind, allowing nothing else to pass through it. Each time BG has a logical, regretful, or self-preserving thought (1:49, 3:07, 3:16), it is quickly overpowered by the insatiable hunger for the sirens’ accursed singing and the “relief” it brings (2:04, 3:19) as he convinces himself that he’s perfectly fine (2:08). In the end, BG fully succumbs to the poison of the sirens (3:23) and blocks out any logical thought that might cause him to realise the true fatality of his impulsive actions (3:27). So...the end?

I can't believe I just found this song! it's now one of my favorites! I've seen some people theorizing about the meaning of the song, for me it's about someone with anxiety who usually numbs their thoughts out with something, giving them a quick fix of dopamine and making the anxiety bearable, but it doesn't make them happy so they try to go out and get their life back but the anxiety creep up behind them and eventually they can't take it anymore and go back to whatever they did or took to numb it all. It's a very biased and personal interpretation but seeing the anxiety tag I couldn't interpret it any other way and it hit close to home so I'm definitely projecting here. To me the name of the song is either sirens as in alarms because anxiety or sirens because of the temptation to get that quick fix again and escape it all.

ok, i gotta say, how the lyrics are presented and just the choice of lyrics in general really gives you that sense of confusion, uncertainty and mind controlled battle that really makes you *feel* like you're being controlled by a group of sirens. Like, is this good? Am i actually being controlled? Do they genuinely like me or are they just using me? How long have i been here? Why are they doing this to me? What will happen if i do escape? Can i even escape? But even with all that fighting going on you know deep down that there's really no escaping... or is there? Its like a tug-of-war thats utterly hopeless. To me, its about a guy desperate to let his hair down and go dancing but too scared or anxious to go out and do it. He's had enough, sykes himself up to go out dancing, to loose himself in the music. the way i see it, the song's about a person with a sort of anxiety disorder (personified as the sirens). he's trying his best to live his life and get out of his comfort zone, but the sirens mock him in his head; he feels their icy grip on his throat. in the end he always gives into his fears and surrenders to the sirens, trapped in an endless cycle he can't escape. the ending's a bit ambiguous on whether or not he escapes their grasp, but i think the last verse is him calling out for help before his anxiety takes him down completely.

honestly i see lots of people interpreting this song as being about romance or seeing signs in a relationship, but im reading this more as a song of someone battling and struggling with their urges as an addict, theres a lot of talk of getting their fill, the call, the voices, paranoia, 'the blues' it just sort of paints this picture of a depressed person who puts on a show and regularly goes out and indulges heavily while knowing its bad for them, they try to stop cold turkey but cant hold out against the withdrawl and pleads with others to not judge him and give him some sympathy, decrying their situation and such. but thats just my interpretation, i like that it can be taken multiple ways

I just discovered Bear Ghost after hearing Starkiller playing in the background of a Jim Sterling video, and I am so, so glad I took the time to track them down. Also, I really want to talk about the lyrics here. So much of the song reminds me of my own experiences with social anxiety, from the way the escalating patter of the vocals raises tension to feeling like you can practically hear everyone else's thoughts, because you're so sure they're all thinking about how awkward you are. When anxiety is filling you with so much fear that it feels like you're about to die, sometimes you can calm yourself down, but sometimes you just have to say "I guess I'm gonna die, then" and party like it's your last night on earth. Absolutely terrifying, but oh so worth it. Considering how many of Bear Ghost's songs have such a supernatural bent to them, though, I'm definitely curious about alternative readings of this one. Plus, I'm still not sure what to make of the distinctly menacing background singers, or how I can't really decide if it feels like the end should be uplifting or disheartening. Agree or disagree, I'd love to know what you other folks think!

Probably don't remember me, but a little over a year ago I played "Necromancin' Dancin' " as part of encounter with a Bard Necromancer with backup-dancing zombies, and posted a comment about it on that video. I ended up listening to the rest of your catalogue after, and ever since have listened to a playlist of your songs while I work on stuff for D&D; always helps get me in the mood for it, really. It's all top notch stuff, really; excited to see what else you have in store for the future. I've tried to write music before, but I'm a perfectionist and I can never seem to finish anything because it's not good enough in my opinion.
