Siri has been bad for a long time now, but with the advent of AI tools like ChatGPT, it's clear that things are getting worse for Siri, not better. But I think this is the year it all changes.

"Sorry, I don't know that one" is the most painful interruption when I can't figure out how to finish my question because I forgot a word or a detail and feel pressured to formulate the question just perfectly so that it might give me a verbal answer instead of linking me to a random article on the web. Oof. Might be the top of my wishlist for it to better understand when I'm pausing to think about how to finish a question rather than pausing because I'm done asking my question or my request.

The biggest annoyance compared to other digital assistants on smartphones, is Siri answering back with 'I found this, check it out...'. How about Siri just speak the answer back? Defeats the purpose of having hands free interaction. Alexa and Google (neither are perfect and in Alexa's case dangerous, as it always seems to want to give an answer, even if it doesn't understand), but they don't insist I read an article for myself.

@@ProperHonestTech Speaking of Maps, I'd like to not even have to open the app, just say "Siri, I've got to run some errands.. I need to go to X, Y, and Z." "Okay, I'll let you know the best way. First turn left at the next stop sign.." When I look at the phone, the maps could just already be open and showing me relevant info. If i say "Actually, I want to go to this store, instead of this store." it can just factor that in without me needing to give it any additional information. It can keep working on the directions task in the background, rather than needing an app to stay open and "running" and can work with me giving it notes on what I need to pick up at the store while still giving me directions when I need it.. even "Siri, tell my mom I'm going to be late coming over this afternoon." and it'll formulate an appropriate text in my voice and let me know what it wrote before sending.

Nice video! I'm actually a fan of Siri and have been using it since it was a 3rd party app. Siri is pretty good at doing what is within it's limited scope of capabilities and I use it many times a day. Yes, it would be great if it was more intuitive in the future. For me, it is a handy hands free helper when driving and around the house. It understands my Midwest U.S. speech patterns quite well and the latest version has far fewer false triggers. Thanks for this and your other videos, keep up the good work!

One recent “feature” that I can’t stand about Siri is that when I’ve asked Siri something and it’s showing me the results, the blue Siri bubble remains on screen listening to whatever I say next, which means I have to remain silent, and if I’m with friends I cannot talk to them about the results I’m seeing on my screen because Siri will think that I’m asking it a new question. And only way for me to get rid of the blue bubble is by clicking out of the results entirely. This is such a dumb idea. If I want to ask a follow-up question it won’t kill me to say “hey Siri” again
@FemaleVillageElder
@FemaleVillageElder 4 ай бұрын
I absolutely love this feature. I love not having to say hey Siri again, and being able to ask repeat questions. When you are through asking questions, and you know you don’t have anything else to say just say thank you and she will hang up immediately after saying you’re welcomeor some such. This way you can have it both ways.

@@FemaleVillageElder yes when you are completely done with the task, but that is not remotely what I am talking about. Read my initial comment again. I am complaining that while you view your Siri results, you cannot say anything out loud or Siri will think you are asking it another thing. I do not want this. I want to be able to talk while I view my Siri results. If I am with friends and I ask Siri something and I want to read the results to them, I literally can't otherwise Siri will take my speech as a question and try to answer it, thereby removing the initial results from the screen and replacing them with an answer to what it thinks is a new question. Saying "thank you" gets rid of Siri, the bubble, and the question results all entirely from the screen. If that's your goal, it's much easier and faster to simply tap somewhere on the screen and Siri will disappear.

Very informative video but most Siri users have known this for a few years now. I ask Siri for something and the reply is "Here is what I have found on the internet." Just like back in the day when we had that blue E in the white box for an internet explorer and entered a search we got Wikipedia and what we were looking for. Today we get Google which offers pages and pages of ads about what we inquired about instead of what we actually were looking for. $$ has corrupted the internet environment. Siri needs a rebuild from the bottom up. Thanks for this video.

Tom - agree with much of your criticisms of Siri though I do think the actual voice recognition aspect is improving. My main beef with it though is how poor it functions in a multi-device environment. I ask a question to Siri on my iPad and I see the response on my watch. Or worse, sitting in my lounge room I ask a question to my iPhone and in the distance hear the answer being given on the HomePods in the kitchen. So doesn’t seem like even basic tech issues are nailed down - and that coming from someone who worked for Apple as an engineer in the early 90s. Enjoy your show.

First, I like the new format. Nice update. As far as Siri goes, I've always found it marginally useful, though somewhat surprising at times. I know, that's an odd mix, but perhaps that's why Siri is so frustrating. I say marginally useful because I'm frequently in an environment where talking to my phone to access data is either rude (I'm already conversing with a person) or inconvenient (a noisy public space). A few swipes and taps usually get me to the data I want, and a quick glance gives me, and me alone, the data I want. I say surprising because I will sometimes ask Siri to do something just of fun that I don't expect it to be able to do, and lo & behold, it does what I ask! THEN I'll ask it a seemingly simple task, and I get either a nonsensical reply, a link to a web article, or "I'm sorry..." I remember reading a Science Fiction story a few years ago that had one character with what I would call a "brilliant" phone. It, among other things, could anticipated the needs of the owner, the interface was conversational speech (It even understood slang and inferences). It would notify the owner, without being first prompted, when the owner would need important information ("Pardon the interruption, Tom. Your friend said it's a 10 minute trip, but it's actually more like a 30 minute drive from here. You should leave now."). And it could do many of these things with an onboard database (no connectivity needed). It was essentially an artificial person on a phone. Until phone based AIs can do a these types of things (OK, perhaps with accessing the web for a fast data inquiry), it will remain a curiosity or gimmick (IMHO).

I don't think I have ever found it that useful. But I am not a "power user." I have used it with Apple Play in my car to perform a task while I am driving. I think your theories on possible future versions are fascinating. Excellent point on having the new AI on only the newest devices; that would make sense from Apple's perspective. I am not upgrading anything right now just to get the newest Siri. Too bad we can't ask Siri to send a text message to Tim Cook to let him know what we think! Cheers.

16:55 Siri does have some problems, I’m a blind user I have to deal with Siri voice and AI. I wish I could turn some functions on and off. There’s a lot of conflicts between voiceover and standard gestures. They sometimes conflict. There’s a lot of issues that need to be worked on, but overall is still a pretty good system. I surely hope the new AI has the ability to be turned off just like some things like rotors I don’t use rotors it confuses a blind person because it changes, but there is no avenue to turn these things off. If you turn off the gestures for these things, it conflicts with your normal gestures, Apple needs to clean up its real estate. They put functions and switches all over the map and a lot of times you have to go and figure out what is dominating the gesture and where it is and I wished they would organize things and get out of the dyslexic mapping of commands and the like enjoy your video. Thank you very much. 16:55

You are the best at following Siri. Thank you SO much. I, too have an M2 iPad Pro, and I am very much hoping that Apple, if they must restrict Siri 2.0 will restrict it to the M series, iPad, or at least all devices with the neural engine. Apple fans have waited for an update to Siri for so long. I think it would be bad publicity to limit it any further down. Besides, Apple has been touting this Neural Engine for so long, let us see what it can do. I know for sure that I will not be buying a new iPad because I do not want the OLED display, due to its rumored risk of burn in. What I most want from Siri is that she is able to control all the things on my device. If this is on device, I don’t worry about any privacy, but I would like for her to be able to tell me how much money is in my Apple account, I would like her to be able to troubleshoot problems with the iPad and I would like (not Siri related,) for Apple, to encourage developers to allow their apps to be split screen. There’s no point in the split screen multitasking, if most of the apps do not support it. Also, I really hope that Apple does not depend too heavily on shortcut integration with Siri. The majority of people, I feel, unless they are techies, don’t know how to operate Shortcuts or just don’t take the time. Siri should be able to do everything without necessary shortcut integration, and it should be able to do everything that spotlight can do only by voice.

As far as I know, all of them require your phone being unlocked and they have some sort of GUI action. That defeats the purpose of an assistant! I want to use them when my phone is in my pocket or when I’m driving! It’s so frustrating when you’re driving, you give Siri a command, only to hear: “Sorry, you have to unlock your iPhone first.” I think the perfect assistant for Apple would have been something like Bixby, which can integrate with plugins in a more predictable way than ChatGPT, allowing Apple to leverage their ecosystem of apps which could work together. No, it was not great at conversing with you, but that was never the vision of Siri, it was always supposed to be a quick way to accomplish tasks, not to pretend to be intelligent.

The problem is that when siri gets a massive upgrade, it stays like that for the past decade.. meanwhile, google and many other voice assistants are constantly getting updates.

Yes Siri has become mostly frustrating and I just dont use it, hardly ever. Google is much more competent but has its shortcomings as well. Great video and I believe you are spot on with your assessments. As my thoughts was going in certain directions during the video, you would address exactly what I was thinking. It seems Siri has gotten worse for some reason over the years. I've had it try to help in a completely unrelated way of what I ask, as in no relation to any of the words I spoke. I believe it is getting buried in data and making its shortcomings easier to see than when initially introduced. When it was fairly new technology it didn't seem this bad.

Some interesting theories on Siri. I am an extremely light Siri user, mostly because it rarely accurately understands what I say. I look forward to seeing if your prediction hold or fold. The video essay is great IMO. Keep them coming.

All Siri options enabled and HomePods installed at home: Siri, play my Playlist. -> "I don't know who is speaking, who are you?". Siri, remind me to do XY every Sunday at 10am. -> "Sorry, I can't do that" Siri, do XY... -> "There is a problem with the connection, please try later". Would be better to say: "Please enable Multicasting and IGMP Snooping on your wireless router. In addition disable Airtime Fairness and lock HomePods to 5GHz Wifi Bands to make stable connection". This would have saved hours of research on Reddit.

Really loved this video! I think they should implement more languages too. Living in a not-English-speaking country I never use siri because talking to my phone in another language would feel so weird and unnatural 😂

Double-tap on the watch is as frustrating siri. It NEVER works first time, occaisionally the second time but usually doesn’t work at all. And yes I make the movement as unambiguous as possible, make sure to raise my arm and turn my wrist so the watch is visible but it just doesn’t work. I use timers all the time so it would be very helpful but not if it’s so inconsistent. Anyone elase have this?

I think you are right about new SIRI being exclusively on the new phones. Maybe SIRI 2 will be on older models too, but something like "SIRI Pro" would be on the new phones only. The reason being, these local LLMs require a lot of storage. I can see Apple adding a separate ~128GB LLM storage/logic chip, not an SSD, but something like MRAM that combines both non-volatile memory and logic that would be used only for their LLM and updates to it. This would be necessary to run SIRI using their LLM model as at least it's primary modes all locally. But it would still reach out to extrernal sources for additional modes. There really isn't any other way to do this locally, so even if they wanted to they couldn't bring full fidelity local inference, besides some very limited small LLM models, that would be much weaker than I wouldn't think Apple would employ, but maybe I'm wrong about that and maybe that could still be an option for older phones with higher memory. I also can see Apple charging a subscription for something like "SIRI Pro", as there is a very real cost to operating data centers with the latest AI chips. Maybe $10 per person, $20 per family or, included in Apple One that's going to increase by $10?

So glad you did this video. I agree, Siri is SO BAD. I'm not sure if it has gotten worse, or if after using AI tools for the past 18 months that I expect Siri to be much more sophisticated than it is.

Siri is a major pain and makes me want to throw my phone against the wall. The recent dumbing down of Siri is I used to be able to ask when a song is playing what year was it released. With 17, it just repeats the name of the song I'm listening to.

I came from years of Android and Google Assistant to Siri when I switched to iPhone 15 Pro Max, had I released how much of a joke Siri is I wouldn’t have changed. My whole house runs on Google voice commands and I haven’t been able to switch it Home/Siri because it’s so bad.

I have two assistants. Siri and Google. Consistently the Google assistant outperforms Siri by actually answering my queries instead of sending me to read about them. I do use Siri for the most basic of tasks such as telling me the time, setting reminders or turning on a light. But an upgrade is ,and has been for a very long time , needed.

One way to both monetize Siri AI and make it available on more devices would be to bundle it with Apple One, perhaps in the Premiere tier or as a separate add-on.

It can't do even thing it could just a few months before. I have no idea why. I had problems with currency conversion... what else we need to say? I hope they don't invest in it because some new version is on the way. If it's not, I'm going with Samsung next year. Would be nice to see a video on how to use Google Assistance on an iPhone.

enjoying this video essay format! i'd consider myself very bought-in to apple's walled garden, and certainly use siri more than any other apple user i know (thanks in no small part to your content!). though i've been trying to hold onto my current devices for as long as they still work, the prospect of a "siri 2.0" on dedicated hardware is absolutely my achilles' heel--definitely the only thing that would get me to pull out my wallet before 2026

I have been using Siri more on the Apple Vision Pro since I got it since she saves me time in looking and selecting....the second place I use her is on my watch (for alarms, timers, reminders, and calculations like tips). However, I never use her on my phone (really don't think I need her as much there). I would love to see Siri powered by OpenAI - but I don't know if that partnership is still available since OpenAI has partnered with Microsoft. Wouldn't it be great if the big tech companies worked together and made cross-platform uses for AI? Thank you for this video - great thoughts!

Nice video, useful explanation of probably why Siri is so bad. I have Google nests all around the house and whilst they too are frustrating and illogical at times they are well ahead of Siri. I fear that Cash grabbing Apple will make ‘ Siri 2 ‘ a premium project and to hell with all our older iDevices. This could finally make me start the move to Android.

The thing that absolutely drives me up the wall is Siri's inability to play songs correctly. Example, I'll be in my car driving and I'd want to listen to a song that has the number two in the title. It simply won't play that song, instead, it'll play the version one of the song (song in question Unforgiven 2 being requested, and Unforgiven being played). The other gripe is with playlists in Apple Music having numbers. One of my playlists used to be called 24x7 Music. If I asked Siri to play it, it'd play some a song that had (twenty-four-seven) in the title, even though I asked it to play my playlist. I got so frustrated, that I changed the playlist name to something else! The worst part is, it used to work fine! I could go on..

I'd love to be able to just tell my assistant simple info, and have her take note and remember it for later. Things like 'This is my friend Martin's house' or 'We're almost out of milk. Remind me next time I'm at the store' or 'Our anniversary is on the 14th, please make sure I don't forget' or 'I love trip hop, except for the rap songs, so please skip those' or 'This is my favorite IKEA store, so the next time I ask you for directions to IKEA, please don't ask me which one. This is the one.' Also I'd love for her to be better at interacting with other apps, so she knows when I last withdrew money form my savings account, the name of that café we went to in Prague last summer, when I last filled up my car, what I last ordered off of ebay etc.
