Another outstanding tutorial. I've only been doing astrophotography for about seven months, and as I am sure you are ready aware postprocessing is one of the biggest challenges for us newbies. I almost was able to duplicate your image following your steps, but I apparently made a few mistakes along the way. I will definitely be doing this several more times to get closer to your image. Please try to find the time to do more of these tutorials if possible. They are very helpful for people like me. Thank you again for taking the time to share this.

Nice one mate. Just stumbled across this video - great tutorial, well explained. I had a little play with my own data of the Rosette Nebula using this process. Data captured using my astro modded DSLR + optolong l-enhance filter. I had a lot more noise to contend with than you but after playing around I actually got an ok image. I could always run it through Photoshop to finish off I guess. I also signed up for the Pixinsight 45 day free trial earlier so will play with that soon too and see how it compares (I see you have a tutorial for PI too). Thanks mate.

Thanks! This is great; works well for me with the L-eNhance filter. Just a suggestion - as I understand Siril, in the Color Saturation tool if you lower the Background Factor to 0 it will tend to make color noise in the dark areas of the image worse when you increase the Amount (but will indeed create more saturation overall). I'm happier keeping the Background Factor at 1 or even higher to help keep noise down.

Great video. I was able to reprocess my first images taken with an L-eXtreme filter on an OSC and getting some decent results. The real takeaways were recomposing the image as HHO in SiriL and manipulating the color saturation with the alternate controls which I hadn't noticed until this video. I wish someone would come up with a comprehensive manual describing all the features in SiriL--most of them seem to be Easter eggs waiting to be discovered.

@@lukomatico Now that PixelMath is available in the new version 1.0, I tried making the red channel red, green channel a combination of 0.7*R and 0.3*G, blue channel G. That seemed to perk things up. And then I also tried the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization--something I hadn't noticed before. This also seemed to sharpen the image up, but has to be treated carefully. Hi Luke. I would like to ask a question related to SIRIL. Could you give a little tutorial on processing multi-sessions with SIRIL? I have captured data over multiple nights on a rather interesting image, but cannot figure out how to add it all together within SIRIL. Thanks
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there mate! - This is something I'm not too sure on how to accomplish in Siril if i'm being honest with you! I tended not to use Siril for stacking, usually on multi-night session's I'd just lump everything in DSS at once at let it chew through it! Have you tried perhaps stacking your data sets individually, e.g night 1, night 2, night 3 etc, and then take the master files and stack those together afterwards? I'm sorry I can't be much help with this one, my apologies :-( All the best, Luke

@@lukomatico Hey Luke, no need to apologize. I have thrown the question out to another fine astro photographer who has given me some tips; much along the line of what you are saying. I will definitely need to do some experimenting. Sometimes I wish those nice software packages would come with manuals or detailed tutorials. There are a lot more intelligent people out there than myself who are muddying along trying to figure SIRIL out. Regardless, it is an absolute game changer for beginner astro imagers who have good gear, can gather the data, but fall short on the processing end. Right now, that's me ;-)

I'm thinking this would also change the colour of the stars, not that you can really tell! If you created a mask of the stars (obviously I'm going beyond the video), applied that to the original image and blended that colour in, wouldn't that bring the correct colour back to the stars? I'm thinking that if someone took a false colour image with a mono camera, they could also take 1x each of RGB to get the correct star colour, merge them into a single picture, apply a star mask to that and blend the result onto the main picture using something like Colour Dodge to bring the correct star colour through. Noise in the RGB image shouldn't matter as you're only after the colour. Would that work?
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 3 жыл бұрын
Heya Paul! - That would be ideal for sure! unfortunately though I do not believe there is a way to create a mask yet in Siril itself, so would probably need doing in external software :) I do something similar in my PixInsight tutorials using StarNet++ which is now integrated into it, and it does work well! re: the RGB stars idea, it does work mate yeah! :-) good shout! The median filter is the noise reduction tool. Also, as far as I'm aware, the colour calibration tool is for the background and white balance, not midtones. Ie, select the middle of a star. On your initial stretch, you should use the asinh stretch as it retains the colour data more
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! - I hugely appreciate the tips mate, thank you! :-) I've tried the median filter before but it seems totally indiscriminate in it's application so kind of blurs the whole image in my experience? Also, you can do a per sub background extraction that works wonders as the light gradient on a single sub is easier to model than a compound expression needed for a gradient accumulated over the whole night. The scripts are available from the borealis lite channel

Have really been learning from this technique. We know that when we use these NB filters for OSC images, that the nebula will be enhanced but the broadband stars will suffer. The idea comes that why not get separate image for the stars not using the NB filter so that the stars get real colors? Then combine the nebula with the stars. It ends up being a bit tricky. Perhaps a guy with your processing skills could pull it off and show the rest of us how to do it?
@lukomatico
@lukomatico 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! - what you describe is certainly a doable technique, admittedly though much easier in PixInsight! :-) I'd probably need to leverage Starnet++ as a standalone program to make it a workable technique in Siril, admittedly though it's not something I'm very familiar with doing :-) It may be an idea to visit some day! thank you for watching and for the quality suggestion, it's appreciated :-) All the best, Luke
